Maybe I am showing my naivete but I'm curious how somebody can monetize a blog like this?

There are a lot of ways to make money with a blog (though very few blogs make much of anything). Those that do generally get money from subscriptions, donations and advertising in various forms (ad placements, sponsored content and affiliate marketing).

If you liked Arkley's stuff enough to subscribe to the Mess, consider sending those funds to him directly if you want this kind of content.

If Arkley's reading this, he should really consider a substack. Much easier to monetize than a blog, and he has a built in readership here.

Website domains are super cheap. And if you have minimal coding experience, it wouldn't be too difficult to create a blog site, so essentially the cost is relatively low to start and maintain. And some blog sites are actually free. I'm gonna guess that Arkley knows his way around a computer or learned how during the quarantine.

The question I have is how does he put food on the table. If we all like the content, we could help him.

I'd be interested in a "subscription" based service. If you read the "why I'm doing this", it's obvious that it would be helping him out.

Really glad to see this. I will certainly subscribe if he puts it behind a paywall.

In this video from August, around the 30 min mark, Russ mentions that Arkley “is now in the fold with Bobcat Athletics”. Not sure, but I took that to mean he is now somehow on staff with with the athletic department. Somewhat of a speculation, so I could be wrong.

I like it but I give it 6 months. Just seems like these personal side gigs never last.

Good luck to him. Unfortunately this is the future of sportswriting for anything lower than Power Five. Hobbyists who work another job and do it on the side.

This, and/or coverage from the school's newspaper. I think we're fortunate that Ohio gets a lot of coverage from students as well.
