OU Country, what is your assessment of AJ from seeing him play this past season? From what I saw, I'll have to side with greencat and FearLeon.

My assessment of AJ would be in line with the idea it was definitely too early to say what he was looking to become. He was injured to start the year, came back, and then got hurt again. Way too soon to call him a swing and a miss in my book, but I'm not a talent evaluator or scout. I'd have been interested in seeing him after a full summer of workouts to see what he can do.

Two things. You didn't see him play and you didn't talk with the folks in Akron who did see him play. This wasn't a swing and a miss this was a case of sending the wrong guy up to bat.

If you are talking about AJG, I saw him in televised games both before and after the haircut. Limited minutes though.

I do admire Saul for letting him keep the hair as long as he wanted. It's basketball, not the military. Avery Johnson's team at Alabama this last season must have been champions in the hair department. Lots of non-conformist hair styles on that team.

Looked lost, timid and unsure in his limited minutes on the court. And he apparently didn't like his nickname. Didn't look MAC caliber at all. Obviously, not a good fit for Ohio or AJ. We wish him well. Time for Saul to bounce back by signing a player that doesn't look lost, timid and unsure. #11Months

I don't think he looked lost at all. He looked exactly like he was. A freshman who missed time in the offseason and beginning of the season who was never expected to be an offensive option as a result.

Seems like most people are comparing him to what Carter and Kirk were able to do as freshmen and they are exceptions not the norm.

Guess we weren't seeing the same AJ. His problem wasn't just on the offensive end. I'm sure he'll get better at another MAC school or D2 program where he can play more.

AJ had hardly seen the court, even in pickup games, even in Summer, when he became part of the rotation for a few games. I don't think we ever saw the true AJ. He didn't play very well in the games, but he was stifled by injuries ever since he set foot in Athens. And I had the opportunity to see him in practice a couple times, and he moved well on the court, made good decisions, etc. The outcome for him in Athens may have been very different had he been spared the constant injury problems. I disagree with ridiculing the kid.

I'm pretty naive here, but is college at all following in the footsteps of the NBA and headed towards positionless basketball? Or does that take the special type of athletes the NBA has?

Because it seems to me we have the perfect set-up with Jason Carter at the five to go really small.

That's really how the team has been recruited if you think about it. It's a bunch of guys who can play multiple positions. Doug Taylor probably being the only exception unless you count him as a 4/5. Jason Carter is a legit 3/4/5.

I think AJ is going to end up a very solid collegiate player at his next stop. I just think he could see the writing on the wall with the guys coming in. You've got Carter with three years left. You've got McMurray coming in and the things that have been quoted and said about him indicate he is going to get minutes. Vander Plas is going to play. Springs is coming as well, plus, we don't know if we're getting a grad transfer big....but AJ probably saw that his time was going to be limited.

At least we beat out Walsh University the first go around. As I said in my earlier post, destined for D2. Good luck to AJ and maybe we'll see him again in the Convo when Ohio schedules Walsh for a home and home.

I saw us go and get Diante flenorl and Sanjay Adell, who were top 150 players. I saw us get Gary Trent. We need to recruit better, period. I hope the new guys are good.

Times are at least a little different than 1996 or 1997 when those guys were recruited though. For starters, there are more schools at the D1 level than 20 years ago - how many more, I couldn't find in a quick search. Secondly, things change. That was the time frame when the MAC was probably at its basketball peak, getting a couple at-large bids around that time.
