They lost 88-67 in an exhibition game against Bowling Green.
This was a scheduled game and not just and exhibition. Bowling Green didn't crush them they way Ohio destroyed CSU or the way Ohio normally destroys a non-D1 opponent.
So, I'm looking at Massey's ratings. There is still a lot of weight given to last year in these ratings which in most years phases out until about New Year's when most computer systems are evaluating from this year's games data alone. With the lack of non-conference games this year, I don't know that it will go away entirely at all this year but in a situation like this a system like Massey is still about the best resource that we have. His ratings rate all of college basketball. This not only includes all three divisions of the NCAA and both NAIA divisions but several JUCO only divisions and Canadian colleges. There are more than 2000 total.
He has Ohio #88. We were one of the very youngest teams in the country and may have improved more with respect to last than the vast majority of teams in D1 so last year being factored may be dragging us down. I think we are probably about #60 but we have to wait and see. During loss at Illinois Ohio played very well but still lost and an historic 40-0 run is impressive against anyone. But COVID has caused the wins to not exactly be murderers row.
Cleveland St. D1 320/357 and 336 overall
NC A&T D1 331/357 and 352 overall
Chicago St. 356/357 and 545 overall
MVSU 357/357 and 693 overall
Those who know anything about statistics know what a skinny tail of a normal bell curve distribution looks like. Most teams are clustered together near the middle but out in the skinning tail are the outliers whose ability is well spaced out from their closest neighbors in ability. Cleveland State is a bad Division 1 basketball team but good enough that they are on the low end of the cluster in the middle. Massey thinks that only championship contenders in other divisions are better than them. With Chicago St. and Mississippi Valley State this is not the case and they would look more at home in another division.
So where is Purdue Northwest? Massey says #511 overall. This means that we made a clear upgrade from MVSU if that is right. I'm not going to go traditional McKinney here. This is still a team Ohio should easily defeat but for a non-D1 opponent they are apparently actually pretty good.
