I saw us go and get Diante flenorl and Sanjay Adell, who were top 150 players. I saw us get Gary Trent. We need to recruit better, period. I hope the new guys are good.
Times are at least a little different than 1996 or 1997 when those guys were recruited though. For starters, there are more schools at the D1 level than 20 years ago - how many more, I couldn't find in a quick search. Secondly, things change. That was the time frame when the MAC was probably at its basketball peak, getting a couple at-large bids around that time.
You’re both right in a way.

The MAC was at its apex in that time. As an undergrad, I watched not only Gary Trent, but Bonzi Wells, Earl Boykins, Antonio Daniels and others at the Convo. From 1995-1999, 10 guys from the MAC went on to play in the NBA. Since then, nine former MAC players have made the NBA. It’s not a perfect barometer, but it’s telling.

That said, we’ve had a lot of players come in during the last few years who are not ready to play MAC basketball. We’re getting passed by other MAC schools in terms of talent and until that changes, the malaise period for this program will continue.

This...all of this ^^^^^. These facts are undeniable when it comes to the recruiting by this head coach. Never good when you recruit players who end up transferring to D2 programs.

True, but Kent State and Toledo offered him too, so Ohio wasn't the only school that thought highly of him. His injury probably had a big part in him not meeting his potential.

Who was the player we had a number of years ago who transferred to the University of Charleston (W.Va.)? Been wracking my brain, and I can't come up with the name.

I'm interested in seeing how AJ does compared to Newark's JT Shumate, another newcomer at Walsh.

I told JT this winter that I thought he could have gone bigger if he had waited until after his senior season and that I thought that he was under-recruited. Some on here think AJ was over-recruited, and I'm not sure I disagree. I will be interested in following these two now that they're on the same roster.

Appears most , if not all, on this board felt AJ was a quality...even great signing.

Interesting to revisit - interesting nuggets including thoughts on Taylor and Block. Things change over the course of a year.

Amazing how many experts, some paid and some not, could be so wrong.

JT transferring to UT after averaging around 16 pts last 2 years at Walsh, hitting 40% from 3.

AJ Gareri, on the other hand, played only 1 game at Walsh this winter after sitting out last year.

I believe that both players just went to Walsh this last year. AJ was in the same class as Preston.

I've been told by more than 1 local hoops fan that JT was interested in moving up from Walsh to Ohio University. Wasn't to be as he is now a starter at UT (and I think he just dunked again on our Bobcats). He was a perfect 11-for-11 from the floor in UT's game tonight at Miami, including making all 5 3's. He added 6-of-7 from the line to finish with 33 pts.

You may be the only person in BA history to reply with quotes to your own post 3 times!! BA All-Star! Maybe HoF material.

On a serious note, that is awesome for that young man! Keep up the good work JT.

I'm afraid that Monroe still has the record, but I think you're in a solid second place! ;-)
