Rifen played good today. I was very happy to see him play at the level he did today

How good would his supporting cast have been that year? Would anyone in the MAC given them competition that year? Would he have filled every gym in the MAC when visiting?
I'm going to add other quality recruits who would have wanted to play with him. That's a Final Four team.

And yes, every gym.

You give MAC fans way too much credit, JSF. When Lebron played a high school game at KSU's gym, there was a small crowd.

So can we play Fakron at 2 pm midweek all the time?

Russ used the word "courageous." Pretty much sums it up. No Preston or Wilson and still smother the #2 team in the league.

Play of the game had to be where Roderick drove the baseline, lost the ball going up, regained it and dropped it in.

Akron hit 8 of 25 from three (25%), we hit 10 of 19 (52.6%). That was the game right there. Not hitting threes took Akron out of its game.

Granger needs to play smarter. Fouling out on a silly steal try with about 12 minutes to go when we're short on bigs isn't going to get him more PT.

McMurray, too. That sequence with about two minutes to go just helped extend the game.

Is Vander Plas still hurting? He had a leg injury last month and went down a time or two today without contact.

Julian White needs more PT.

Clinched a spot in the MAC tourney.

But if Groce were coaching against him in March then who would have won?

Jalen White, too.

Really liked his shooting touch from h.s. videos. Must be lacking in other parts of the game to see such little playing time.

It did but it was cause and effect. We moved the ball and they didn't. I kept thinking while watching the game that that offense looked nothing like our offense in 2012.

Our help defense is 1,000% better than it was in December.

I agree. Still a couple of out-of-control plays but he was much more under control today. He competed hard and was Johnny-on-the-spot a few times for easy deuces. We need more of that from Rifen.

At one point, I observed that our helping on defense was too aggressive and we got caught in switches a lot. Today seemed like every time they switched it was seamless and left no one uncovered. It is definitely a feel thing and they're getting it down for sure.

Are the folks over at the zippy message board upset yet?
Should be by now.
Stopped by to see what is all happening over there. They’ve been crying about the announcers the whole game...
They'll just have to put up with their announcers. Not everyone can have a quality pair like Russ and Rob.

Rob & Russ were the announcers - They were bitchin about them being homers. Granted Rob & Russ were gratuitous to the Bobcats efforts in the game, especially calling out the long layoff and lack of Preston & Wilson, and they discussed the history/700th game in the Convo etc. (and the venue being the best in the MAC - What, the JAR is any comparison??). I though Rob & Russ called it pretty fair - and fair being that 'Kron just plain sucked today!

Missed this game, but will watch the archived version tomorrow on ESPN+. I can't believe what I'm reading, though -- both Preston and Wilson were out and we clobbering them? I'm having a hard time believing this, after watching the first tilt between these two teams. Guys must have stepped up big time. Can't wait to watch the game via "tape delay." Are we really going to be the team no one wants to play in March? Hmm . . . I'd love to see that actually be true. Go OHIO!

Maybe this is more commonplace in the transfer age than I realize, but I was just looking at the Akron roster and noticed something interesting. The number of Juniors/Seniors who began their career at Akron: zero. All of their upperclassmen are transfers.

Not sure the Bobcats can get the top seed as it looks like Toledo will end up being the #1 seed. Crazy things will have to happen the next week for the Rockets not to win the regular season. Outside chance at the two seed, if Ohio can win out or if Akron stumbles once or twice. Realistically the three seed is in play and that would probably be a matchup with BG, Buffalo or Kent. I see Miami and Ball as the 7/8 seeds. Any of the top six teams could win three games in Cleveland. The Michigan teams are bad and NI is terrible. Hoping that Covid stays away and remaining games get played.

The box score showed 6 technical fouls. Four for Akron and two for us. Does anyone know if those were all player fouls? Seems like Dustin and Groce were going at it with the refs. Were any of the techs on them?

Calling the game on the radio and on TV is very different. In the former, you need to paint the picture just like the old radio shows of the 30s and 40s. With TV, the picture is already painted. Also, radio goes to a much smaller home audience while TV goes nationwide. An Akron fan in Dallas could have watched it and a OU fan in Salt Lake city could have too. A plain old basketball fan could have watched it anywhere. In other words, I think the expectation is that at least on TV, the viewer should not be able to tell which school is paying the announcers. While I've come 180 on Russ since his early "fashion days" and he and I talked about that, right now the TV broadcast could use a bit of a tweak. Sadly, I didn't get to listen to any of the first half because I was on hold on two phones trying to talk with Schwab.

Speaking of photos, I saw a photo yesterday of the Convo during the first-ever game (Indiana) in 1968. There were about 7,500 empty seats.

Three Technical Fouls: Two on Akron players, one on an OHIO player. Only 2 Technical Foul shots. The two were offset.

Russ and Rob aren't as neutral on TV as they used to be but they're not as homer as some others I've heard on ESPN3/+ and some other networks. If you watch FS1 when they're doing OOC games between teams from one of the conferences they cover and one they don't, it's pretty disgusting how one-sided they can be. It's natural that Russ and Rob should show some favoritism toward Ohio. Maybe Akron fans should be more concerned that their team lost by 17 points to an Ohio team that didn't have its two top scorers on the floor.

McMurray was the tech on Ohio as he barrel rolled over Marshall following some spirited jockeying at the free throw line a minute prior. Let's just say if McMurray was on the opposing team, I would've come away thinking he was kind of a punk. Boals did not appear too happy with him. Maybe I'm letting his missing tooth cloud my judgment some.

Mason McMurray was, um, using some Jamie Bosley techniques out there. Instigator. Not a good look for him, IMO.

That is a great photo. I’ll add, first of all, that I like John Groce as a coach and appreciate what he did for Ohio basketball. Have a lot of respect for him. However, if I am totally honest I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the TV shot of him taking solace on the folding chair near the end of the game rather than strutting up and down the sidelines in “scowling celebration”.

Something else that jumped out at me in the photo, and I know he’s flexing, is how Roderick appears to have been hitting the weights. Brown looks stronger too. As do some others. As just an observer, I think Boals and our strength people are ramping up our physicality across the roster.
