No love for Eric Hilton?
If were mentioning names from the past I can go back a quarter century for Geno Ford. He isn't in Preston's or Cooper's league but he was arguably the second best player on the Trent teams that won a conference title is freshman year and a Preseason NIT his sophomore year.

He was a very good ball handler that could certainly score as well.

If you look at his stats going back when not in a big game, similar things happened to DJ. He never knew when not to shoot. It was not just an off night, it was bad judgment. He needed to know when to shoot and when not to bring the team down. Preston is much more balanced, better shooter, less selfish, as athletic - but with height. If choosing side for a pick up game, I would pick him every time over DJ.

Preston is better. Cooper was a better showman.

It’s now pretty commonplace for guards to get past the half court and pop a shot from 29 feet. In 2012, it was a pretty novel thing.

But I’m splitting hairs. These are among the 10 greatest players in program history. They’re both great.

As for Simmons...Great counting stats, but I thought even Fears was better as far as helping a team win a game because he was an elite, elite defender when he wanted to be. I’ll never forget him going step for step against Rondo. Freshman year of course. Let us never speak of sophomore year again.
... except that was his sophomore year :)
(Simon and Garfunkel starts playing and I give a glazed look ahead)

I’m getting old. I’m misremembering events from 16 years ago.

I'd start with the 4 guys in the rafters and add DJ Cooper. Unlike numerous other Bobcats who are not ever goin to have their number retired DJ never got a chance in the NBA but he had a lot of school records and 3 tournament wins in 3 years as PG. He'd be my add-in right now and they might choose to put him up there eventually.

Jason Preston was named to the NABC District 14 First Team and is MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Winning an MVP in a very good European league is a solid accomplishment too, even if he squandered a good bit of potential with his drug test shenanigans.

Preston’s also never shot 3-20 with 4 turnovers while recklessly forcing things the entire game in the tournament.

Winning or losing in a single elimination tournament a decade apart doesn’t determine who is the better player. I can only imagine what a Virginia defensive unit could do to a gunning, undersized point guard.
