Team is shooting 26.8% through 6 games from 3.

34-127

Chaos 6-29
Shelly 7-21
Pavs 9-20
Simmons 3-13
Conners 5-20
E2 1-5
Kelly 2-4
Walking Bucket 1-5
Aussie 0-5
Breath 0-1
Evans 0-5

You can argue it’s the worst shooting team in America. Not to mention we are the worst team in the country defending the 3 ball.

Also, Conners has been a huge disappointment.

That caused physical pain in my body to read. So so bad. Crazy bad.

E2, Kelly, & Pavs have to be willing to take more 3's. Kelly & E2 simply because you can't play hoops today in their position and not stretch the floor and Pavs because he's legitimately our only threat from 3. Sheldon & Connors have to MAKE more 3's (at least 1 of DC's makes was banked in which makes this even crazier), Hadaway and to a lesser degree Simmons need to chill. I'm always a supporter of bigs having the green light to take a 3 but you have to show you deserve it. Combined 9-42 and Hadaway being the highest volume 3 point shooter is BAD basketball. If I remember right Hadaway was 3-8 last night which is OK, but that's way too many attempts for him.

I have to eat Thanksgiving dinner with 2 George Mason grads this week. I don't even know how to explain this situation. As host I may put in place a ban on talking about Bobcats basketball alongside politics.

I this this is a really important point. If E2 and Kelly aren't shooting, what's their role?

During the off-season, everybody knew spacing/shooting was going to be a challenge. There was a lot of talk about the 'big' lineup of Pavs/Elliott/Hadaway/Simmons/Breath and uncertainty about whether it could work.

Boals presumably thinks it can't, because he hasn't given a single minute to that five man group.

But at this point, you kind of have to wonder why. Right now we are an awful 3P (332nd nationally) shooting team, and awful defending the perimeter (361 nationally).

If that 5 man group isn't giving away shooting or perimeter defense, what's the downside?

Boals' entire system is built around the idea of being able to play your best 5; why not give this group a shot? They seem to be our best 5 -- though I'm open to the idea that Elliott's no longer in that group.

At the risk of being overly simplistic, I would summarize the atrocious perimeter offense/defense stat as "we are getting almost nothing from our wings." Our "Big Three" of Pavs, Hadaway, and Simmons are a decent 1-4-5 lineup, but we need much more from Conners, Sheldon, Elliot, and (to a lesser extent, as I think he is the best of the bunch as a freshman) Kelly.

Slight Thread Drift Alert below ----------------------

This team reminds me of a poor man's 2021-22 team. Similar roster construction with lots of individualistic/"ball-stopper" play, but without the superior talent to brute-force some wins. And defensively, the 21-22 team could actually guard the 3:

Pavs = Sears
Hadaway = BVP
Simmons = Carter
(big dropoff)
Roderick = Sheldon/Conners
Brown = Kelly/Elliott

Seriously...how do Evans & Kuany have 5 attempted 3 pointers between them? And Simmons with 13, come on. Hadaway too many as well. Meanwhile we have supposed actual shooters barely hoisting ever.

Does Boals ever rebuke players for shot selection? Maybe he does, but I have not seen it and it sure looks like he doesn't. I've said before we need to apply some analytical precision to our approach, maximize the higher percentage chances and avoid the lower percentage takes. I hate to assume what does or doesn't go on in the team prep...but it sure seems like there isn't much discussion about this.

Gather everyone around in the film room, show Ayden Evans hoisting a contested 3 with 20 seconds left on the shot clock and tell him that was really freaking dumb. Then show Pav catching an outlet pass on the perimeter with 5 feet of separation and ask him what better opportunity he was waiting for.

What is Elliot's role in general? I know he's been hurt but his stats are looking mighty bleak right now. It just seems like he's a body running around out there not really involved.

Yeah, I am a little lost on Elliott. I don't think I understand what he's actually good at.

He's pretty deceptive. He looks the part, moves well, and is athletic. But he plays out of control a lot. His finishing at the basket is really bad. This year he's at 33% in the restricted area and 44.4% in the paint. Last year, he was at 50% and 33.3% respectively. So there's a sample size here that leads you to believe it's just not something he's good at. And he just doesn't take threes at a meaningful volume.

And meanwhile, we're so bad at defending the perimeter that it's hard to believe he's a plus defender there.

Right there with you. His efficiency numbers are almost the worst on the team. We don't really have anybody else to replace his minutes so hopefully this is the low point in the season and we start to see some improvement, I don't feel super confident that we will.

Elliot reminds me of what they said when Warren Harding was running for president, "He just looks like a president." Well, Elliot to me, "looks like a basketball player." Unfortunately, that doesn't mean he performs like a basketball player.

Yea, I mean at the end of the year last year, he seemed to be shooting a decent clip from 3. His attempts in the home loss to Bethune Cookman were just downright UGLY. He looked like a guy who should be attempting fewer threes than Javan Simmons, who arguably shouldn't be shooting any threes.
