I'll admit, I have seen Creighton play a grand total of 0 minutes this year. All I know is they got bounced in their conference tourney, have a coach that said a pretty shocking thing, and barely squeaked by UCSB (who was a very good mid major). Let's go get this darn thing.

They are a very balanced team with high level talent across the board. They are not huge in height, but have good athleticism.

They have five players in double figures. They shoot the ball well and have a very solid defensive FG%.

They are an average rebounding team and a below average FT shooting team. They've got a few guys who are good FT shooters, but others who are in the 50%s.

Zegarowski is their leader. He was on some All-American lists last year, and was a pre-season All-American this season.

They take care of the ball...with an excellent assist to turnover ratio.

McDermott is a very experienced and respected coach and he has an experienced staff.

It will be a very difficult test for the Bobcats, but I think the Cats have a chance to pull the upset if we play smart defense on their threes and if we hit a decent percentage ourselves from three.
Good analysis. They are significantly more athletic than Virginia and their guards are very good. I went back and watched a couple of their games and I think there is an opportunity for Wilson to have a much bigger impact on offense than against Virginia. They are a good defensive team but there will be a lot more room to operate than there was against Virginia.

From Rabinowitz at the Dispatch. I could be snarky and say it's nice of the paper to begin covering Bobcat sports...so I will.

As only Ohio team left in NCAA Tournament, Bobcats want to continue March magic
After March Madness’s first weekend, Ohio University is the only team within shouting distance still standing.

And the Bobcats, or at least their fans, are certainly doing plenty of shouting.

Ohio (17-7) pulled off one of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament’s early upsets when it defeated No. 4 seed Virginia 62-58 Saturday night at Indiana University’s Assembly Hall. The 13th-seeded Bobcats will play No. 5 seed Creighton on Monday night.

That Ohio, which was only a fifth seed in the Mid-American Conference tournament, would be the final survivor among teams in the area defies the odds. But Ohio State was shocked in the first round and Cleveland State bowed out quietly. No other Ohio team made the tournament. Nor did some traditional powers from bordering states — such as Kentucky, Louisville and Indiana.

In other words, the Ohio bandwagon has room aplenty.

“The fact that we're the only one left, I think that's great for social media and fans,” Bobcats coach Jeff Boals said. “(As for) our bandwagon, keep coming. Hopefully, we'll keep this thing going and we'll take every Bobcat fan that we can get.”

Players were well aware of the postgame celebration in Athensand of the opportunity they have for attention.

“It's kind of cool to see that the whole state is kind of behind us,” said sophomore forward Ben Roderick, an Olentangy Liberty graduate who scored 15 points against Virginia. “Seeing our university last night coming together was just an unbelievable feeling. We were all just like, ‘We did this. We're bringing all these people together.’ It's just an unbelievable feeling that we have.”

This is what Boals envisioned when he took over two years ago at his alma mater. Ohio hadn’t made the tournament since 2012, when it reached the Sweet 16. Boals played on the 1993-94 OU NCAA Tournament team that lost in the first round.

He knows how special an NCAA win is, especially against a Virginia team that was technically the defending champion because the pandemic forced cancellation of last year’s tournament.

“We wanted to celebrate that one,” Boals said. “I think it's just huge for university. The messages and the attention that our university has gotten through this run have been phenomenal. I told our guys after the game, ‘Enjoy it, soak it in, and enjoy the moment’ because too many times in life you don't stop and look around and enjoy that experience. You're always on to the next thing.”

Boals was an Ohio State assistant for seven years under Thad Matta, who attended Saturday night’s game.

“I would not be here without him,” Boals said of Matta. “He means the world to me — he and his family. Just awesome people.”

Boals said Matta empowered him as an assistant, which prepared him to be ready to become a head coach. Boals coached Stony Brook for three years before he was hired at OU.

“Jeff was one of the greatest assistant coaches I’ve ever had,” Matta told The Dispatch. “I knew that he was destined to be a head coach, and I knew he was going to be successful.”

Matta said Boals is able to combine high intelligence and basketball knowledge with an engaging personality.

“He's like a magnet," Matta said. "People come to him and just love that about him."

Boals certainly isn’t afraid to have fun. His postgame dances in the locker room have started to go viral. On Saturday, an assistant coach asked him to do the Junebug. Boals had no idea how to do it and was shown a video before taking the plunge.

“There's a lot of pressure,” he joked, “from my kids — my own personal kids —particularly.”

Boals isn’t the only Bobcat with personality or a compelling story. There’s star point guard Jason Preston, the high-school benchwarmer in Orlando, Florida, whose big break came at an AAU tournament while he was attending classes as an ordinary student at the University of Central Florida. Preston had 11 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists against Virginia.

There’s Ben Vander Plas, who had a game-high 17 points, many coming at crucial times. Vander Plas’s formal first name is Bennett, and yes, he is named for the family of the coach he beat Saturday. Vander Plas’ father was a college teammate of current Virginia coach Tony Bennett at Green Bay, which was coached by Tony’s father, Dick.

“That family has meant a lot to my family over the years,” Vander Plas said Saturday night. “When we got matched up, I was really excited to play against him. He's a great coach.

“I got to talk to him for a little bit after the game. He asked where my dad was sitting. That was a pretty cool moment with coach Bennett.”

Now the Bobcats want to keep the cool moments going. As much as Boals wants his team to enjoy the ride, he knows they had to turn the page quickly.

“The big thing now is how do we regroup?” he said. “How do we come back today and refocus to concentrate on Creighton, which is a really good team?”

So is Ohio, though no one thought a month ago that they would be the last team in Ohio still alive. Because of COVID-19 issues, the Bobcats played only three games after Feb. 2 until the MAC tournament.

Ohio State was the team expected to play deep into March, not Ohio.

“Obviously, I want to see them be successful,” Boals said of the Buckeyes, who lost as a No. 2 seed to No. 15 Oral Roberts. “It was a big seven years of my life, and I’ve got some friends still on the staff.

“But we’ll take every Buckeye fan that wants to keep cheering. We will gladly accept you. March Madness is March Madness for a reason, and we're just very fortunate to be able to keep playing.”

Some of the posters are pretty haughty and talk like they were founding members of the Big East with a few nattys under their belt, but most seem cautiously optimistic, which seems pretty reasonable.

I'd think that is to be expected. I mean, would they rather see us or UVA?

I agree. I just thought the quote was pretty high on unintentional comedy scale. Their focus seems to be less on us and more on how important it is for them to win this game and I'll agree. To take that next step they really do need to beat us. A loss might have significant impact on McDermott's future particularly in light of recent events. They've been a really good program for a long while now...except in March.

As I fast approach middle age, I’ve become out of the cultural loop.

When exactly did we start to become referred to as the “Bobbies” online?

I don’t ever remember this reference until recently.
So would Creighton be the "Blueies"?

It's obviously people who don't what the hell is going on.

Disagree with this. He did a ton in the UVA game that wasn't in the box score. Got Huff in foul trouble and neutralized his length. He was a huge reason for the win.

I also remember a play where he completely man handled Huff on the block for an easy lay in, made it look simple. Pretty impressive play that stuck out to me.

100% agree. He did a great job keeping Huff away from the basket.

These are interesting points and I agree with both of you. Virginia was a game where he just wasn't going to score. The missed dunk happened and I thought is he tired and couldn't get the hops.

Then you look at the defense he played all night and that takes energy. It was a gritty performance and I'm so glad the missed dunk didn't come back to haunt us like it did to Rutgers against Houston. They had the same thing happened...missed dunk to go up 7...Houston and rebounds and hits dagger three....comeback could not be stopped.

Bottom line...I think Dwight has a bigger game offensively tonight.

This was my take also . . . great defensive game, and I'm glad the missed dunk didn't get into his head. If anything, it increased his intensity. Think he's a key to a Bobcat victory today. Here's wishing him many "dimes" from JP.

I heard Coach Boals on the Fan 97.1 Columbus this morning. Amazing that Beau Bishop and James Laurinaitis brought on Coach Boals first thing and spoke of the joy they had in watching the Bobcat game before they cried in their beer about the Buckeye game. Beau Bishop talked about his numerous in-laws who are Bobcat alums and Laurinaitis talked about the "stones" of Vander Plas and Roderick in their shot taking. Bishop said the excitement of the Bobcats win and their possible tournament run was evident not only in Columbus but through the sport world, via columns by Peter King (Bobcat alum) and other media types.

It seems to me that Coach Boals built up a lot of good will in Columbus by being a nice guy and accessible to the media in his years under Coach Matta (who was in attendance at the game in Bloomington.) The rewards of that accessibility are paying off. I can't ever remember the Bobcats leading a major radio show on the Fan in Columbus, a station that is practically run by Ohio State.

I can only throw tons of props to DW3 for the job he's done all year. I went into the season expecting Foster and Rife to be able to spell him. Heck, I was hopeful that as a JUCO Rife would actually split minutes with Dwight. Instead we get Rife barely playing, Foster hurt and a true frost in Granger who really isn't ready skill-wise. Intense dude and a great fiery player but we go from a 9 with Dwight to a 4 with Granger on a scale of 1 to 10. Dwight's minutes have been huge and if he's tired looking at times, that's fine with me!

My favorite quote from their board. For the most part they seem to trying to scout us statistically. Because of the way our season played out it's hard to look at our schedule and results and get a picture of what is on the court right now.
From what I have seen of their board in sounds like their board was flooded with smack talking UCSB fans last week. If someone goes comes into here to talk basketball then I think that's great. If you show up on someone else's board and all that you have to contribute is smack talk then I can see how that might be annoying.

Some of that goodwill probably comes from living in New Albany, too. ;) Wouldn't surprise me if media-types frequently run into him at Easton, Polaris or even the NA Kroger.

He's been getting a lot of airtime on Channel 4, thanks in no small part to Ohio alumnus Justin Holbrock.

Akron fan here. Happy for you folks. Let's get this out of the way up front: Jealous but happy. :-) Hoping it might have been us last year, but always happy to see the MAC do well. Really do enjoy the rivalry. Also happy because I really like Jeff Boals. A number of years ago when he was an assistant at Akron I happened to sit next to him at a soccer game (he supported everyone) and he struck up a conversation with me even though I was nobody to him. Just got a really fine impression of him and I sort hated when you hired him. :-D But I do have one other connection to Ohio that makes me feel like I deserve to be welcome on the board. I have a great uncle who is a former president at OU. Go Cats (not Bobbies geez - at least we have the courtesy to call you Bobkittens ;-)) Beat Creighton!

My one conversation with coach Boals was similar. Even though I intended to chat with him and introduce myself, he struck up a conversation first. It's hard to imagine finding a more likable guy, nobody has a bad thing to say about him.

If I recall correctly there was a pretty large contingent of folks on Akron's message board who wanted Boals before they hired Groce.
