Wow. Didn't see that one coming, but then you realize he's 70 and already been at UNC 18 years after 15 years at Kansas. Doesn't feel like that long - guess I'm getting old.

Do they promote from within or hire outside? If they go outside this one will have a major ripple effect as well.

How much money has he banked? Wow! Impressive career and I’m with you, “time passes on”, no realization that he was at UNC that long. Hell, when we beat UNC he wasn’t there.

Hmmm...Alabama's athletic department has a lot of money. There is a reasonable chance that they are going to have to make a decision between paying Nate Oates or new solid gold toilets in the football locker room.

First thought of a replacement was Wes Miller down at UNCG, but I'm not sure if he has the experience or high level status they're looking for. But they do like to hire their own and he's a former player.

The Athletic story on candidates referred to Wes Miller by saying "He’s as close to a non-blood relative son to Roy Williams as can be. Miller would offer the best of all worlds: The “family” hire who also brings a different energy and fresh perspective to the program." Didn't know that connection was there.

Miller appeared to be a slam dunk a few years ago but his star has faded down here a bit lately. Stackhouse is getting some run. But don’t be stunned if they go “outside the family”. it’s not like there is a long tradition of hires. McGuire was a st. john’s guy. dean smith a kansas guy. yes guthridge and doherty were both from the tree but are considered failures. Williams of course was the ultimate tree guy, but also had proven kansas roots. If they do go outside it will be a proven coach and name. perhaps a billy donovan (whose name has already come up). Alums won’t mind outside as long as they win and beat duke.
