Or he could just borrow the entire UMKC team. Didn't they all put in for a transfer after their coach was fired the other day?

Now THAT will be a rebuilding job of epic measures.

9 UMKC players have put their names in portal. W may do a little less than that.

I don't really get this. First off, I don't know why anyone was expecting Dartis to return (or return to form) given his devastating injury. I consider it gravy if he comes back as a contributor, but I hardly expect an All-MAC player no matter what.

Carter is clearly our best player, so there's no way to sugarcoat that departure if/when it happens. But the hard truth is that our team was not very good. If the whole damn thing blows up, it's far from ideal, but it's not like we were going to be worldbeaters next season no matter what.

If he decides he doesn’t want to be a Bobcat, let him out of his scholarship. I would rather have Boals pick up someone who wants to play for him.

That was some other poster's theory. Ask them.

As far as UMKC, I think 9 is just from the last few days. There may have already been a couple that put in for a transfer before that.

I really hope Boals can re-recruit him, but I feel like that never works out.

With Carter back I thought we were only a couple pieces away from being a league contender, but now we have to start completely over.

That is some out of the box thinking. I hope Boals is tapping into this board so he gets an idea of what he should do. Actually one would think Boals and Carter would connect - given their styles and grinding.

One step back to go three steps forward. I can see an Ohio Bobcats team down the road under Coach Boals where Mr. Carter would be a good sixth man coming off of the bench. The fact that Jason was the best player on the Bobcats last year is why we are where we are today in terms of a coaching change. I wish the young man the best of luck in his future endeavors, but if we need to move on; well, we simply need to move on.

It’s not out of the box, it is essential to being a great leader. I love what Boals has said about leadership. Boals will have to find a way to connect with Jason and others during this transition. Part of being a great coach and a great leader is having a vision and knowing how to get talent and and bring the talent together to carry out the vision. Hopefully, Jason is receptive to the vision and wants to be a leader that helps carry out the vision. His wife is probably a subject matter expert when it comes to change management. She works for a company that is tasked with managing change all the time.

Jason is very talented and could be a future MAC player of the year. He has not reached his potential yet l, hopefully he stays and grows. He could be like a bigger Jeff Nordgaard. Jason has some tools, he has to figure out how to use them. Boals being a former forward can help him.

His speaking style reminded me a little bit of his mentor's, Larry Hunter. Saul may have had more charisma (in the secular sense of the word) than Jeff. Some young people respond to the more charismatic type leaders and not to those who appear a little sterner and sound more like a disciplinarian. Also, one's initial response may be a lot different than what your response would be after a little bit of time when you become more acquainted with the person. Hopefully, that will be the case with any current players who had a negative first reaction to Jeff's style.

You are right, Saul has a lot of charisma, the players may not get that from Boals, but Boals can probably game plan a lot better.
My favorite Larry Hunter story, I remember being a student at Ohio and trying to help Larry Hunter try to recruit Theo Dixon and Jon Burge, neither of them had Ohio grades. I remember talking him about Bas as well, I was just a fan but Larry Hunter was just so candid and nice. He told me Bas was going to have a monster season, Bas was such a hard worker, but he never put it all together, but coach Hunter swore by him. Coach Hunter loved Athens, he loved Ohio basketball. I bet that he was probably fun to play for.

Agree. If Carter doesn't fit in Boal's plans, tell him and help him transfer. If he does fit in the plan then Jeff will have to re-recruit him. Along with several other players I suspect. Then on the other hand there are a few players, I suspect, that Jeff may "release" and help them find another team.

Will it suck if Carter leaves, sure. But even with Carter, I don't believe anyone thinks this is an 18-20 win team next season. I'm more interested in year three. Boals needs two recruiting classes to get this thing headed in the right direction. The current talent is just flat out not there. This program is basically starting from scratch with or without Carter.

I'll stick by my prediction. If Carter transfers to a Power 5, which I assume he'll do, he will be a role player and won't touch the minutes per game and points per game from this past season. If he transfers, I wish him the best of luck. We can't hold anything against the kid because this comes with the territory when a coaching change is made. I'm just glad he never dribbled out the clock with his team down two with 5 seconds left in a MAC Tournament game. #JSmooth #Forever

I like Jason Carter a lot and was looking forward to one, maybe two more years of him playing as a Bobcat. This may or may not factor into whatever decision Carter is going to make, but there was an eye-opening statement Jeff Boals made in his first interview with Russ Eisenstein that I certainly wasn't expecting--that our new coach's preference would be to play with a point guard, a center and THREE wings.

I don't know how that translates to coach Boals as of yet, but it sounds like he's more inclined to play with a stretch-four instead of a power-four.

This is in no way is to insinuate that Carter wouldn't fit in his system, as I think any MAC coach would be happy to have him out there somewhere on the court, even at center, if need be.

But it is an interesting vision the way coach Boals desires to play...

I for one thought that Saul did not make the most of JC's ability. Saul always had him on the wing and this forced him to dribble to the hoop. JC is a good back to the basket player. He has no mid range jumper. His 3 pt shot also needs work. When JC was near the basket he didn't look to pass out to the wing to an open shooter.
This sums up what Saul's strategy was for JC, limited, very limited.
I believe that Jeff will sit down with him and talk through what his strategy is for the team and for JC as well. I would hope, as someone else on this subject mentioned, that JC would take a few days after his time with JB to think through things. A knee jerk reaction would not be the right decision.

Hopefully Carter is simply giving himself the opportunity to explore other options. I bet he's set to graduate early but who knows. Either way I hope he knows he has a huge role on this team moving forward. He has already had success here and I don't see that changing because of a new coach.

Transferring is risky! Carter is in a great position here at Ohio and I hope he stays.

A President of the Jason Carter fan club this would devastate me. I will admit Carter struggled some with double teams this season and his outside shot was not as good as he is capable...and yet in spite of all that he was still clearly one of the best players on the court every game.

Keeping Carter would go a long way to helping the transition, both in being competitive upfront and helping to lead the program. I'll be sweating and worried until this is resolved.
