Plus a 1 year grad has no bearing on 2022-23 schollies. What this team needs is a Travis Wilkins type of player. Team guy who can play right away but not needing to score. We have plenty of offense.

I'm excited to see what Mr. Sears can do! He actually had a good FG% from two, especially considering he was a freshman guard. Also, he shot it well from the free throw line. If he can improve his 3 point shooting, look out! I can't help but wonder if that is why Tommy Schmock was brought in. He may give us that 3 point component when needed. Only time will tell...

Go Bobcats!

Travis Wilkins? Schmock? C'mon, have faith that Boals will do a whole lot better than this. Set your sights higher.

Agreed
Wasn't misleading at all. Anyone who saw him excel in the combine knew his college career was over.
It was 100% misleading. Believe it or not, most people don't watch draft combines. When I saw your post, I legit thought I missed an official announcement.

We do not need more scoring so getting a grad who wants to score will be tough.

I mean I can't control who doesn't watch the combine and doesn't read combine articles from reputable NBA writers and sites. But again...it did not take a rocket scientist to know Preston was gone after the combine based on what he displayed on the court and the reviews he was getting from scouts and NBA writers who know what they are talking about.

so the timing of this and the Schmock signing. Cannot be coincidental. Or maybe it is, what the hell do I know. But you get a "veteran" transfer who can at least handle the ball, hit open threes and ensure that Sears doesn't have to play 37 minutes a game. Keep the scholly open unless somebody you really, really like is available.

Good luck, Jason. Thanks for representing Bobcat Nation as well as anybody could have.

Schmock looks like a good fit. I love under-the-radar guys who deserve a chance to play. I trust Coach Boals on this - his ability to recruit and develop players and appropriately trim a roster when necessary has been super-impressive. Looking forward to next season (and beyond).

I've been seeing more and more of this the past 12 months on this forum....."I trust Boals on this". I completely agree with this sentiment. Just nice to have a guy in the big office who everyone trusts and can rally behind. Even without Preston, Boals is going to have these guys ready to go in a few months and they are going to be really good.

He isn't Preston but he will be one of the best point guards in the MAC. But the bigger harm right now might be who get minutes at guard off of the bench. We thought we might have an NBA point guard and 6 other guys that would start for the vast majority of D1 teams. Now we just have 6 guys that would start for the vast majority of D1 teams. That's a pretty big difference.

Lets see what happens next.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty comfortable with 7 players returning that were part of beating Virginia, plus the addition of Jason Carter.

Sears
Brown
McDay
Roderick
BVP
Wilson
Granger

*Carter

I would agree it would be nice to find someone to add to that mix that plays the 1, 2, or 3, but this is a darn good group. With two, perhaps three scholarships to give, right?

Could not agree more. I'll put that 8 up against any MAC school.

The one real intangible that Preston takes with him is someone who can take over a game for five or seven minutes and carry the team. That's the shoes we need to fill. BVP has shown he can do that; B-Rod probably can too. Preston can do that night after night, though, so we'll need to have someone else step up.

That, and I would add that JP got guys a lot of easy buckets. I didn't see that sort of distribution from Sears last year, but JP had a special gift of floor vision and getting the ball to guys for easy baskets. I'm as excited about seeing Sears' growth as anything. For a freshman, he was really good last year and there's going to be more put on his plate this season.

I do believe that most MAC schools would like to have a player like Brown coming off the bench. But my point remains. Just because Sears will be one of the better guards in the conference doesn't mean it doesn't affect other roles. JP is maybe my favorite Bobcat ever. I think he made the right decision and will root like hell for him to have a long career. But I think Ohio would have been one of the top 10 teams outside the P6 and arguably right up there in the argument as the next best team after Gonzaga outside the P6 and the American, A10, and MWC with him to just a team that might still be the favorite to win the MAC without him.

I'm a huge JP fan but...

SEARS freshman year > JP freshman year

I'm not drawing any conclusions from that but it's true.

Stats (approx):

Preston first year: 6ppg/ 3 assists / 4 rebounds / 1 steal / 3pt%: 21
Sears first year: 9ppg / 3 assists/ 3 rebounds / 1 steal / 3pt%: 29%

Jay Preston got more run from Saul as a freshman. For some reason except for the 4 games Preston was out Boals kept Sears restrained.

Well, you have to consider who JP was playing along side of… Not to mention names but, 4.4 turnovers a game and dismal offensive efficiency numbers are not a fair comparison to what Mark had to work with…
