Their coaching search could be interesting.

For sure. I call them "My Dad's Bearcats" and grew up on UC basketball - but the situation there is no bueno. The sooner they cut bait on this one the better. At this point, I think it's about nothing more than figuring out how to pay no buyout, or negotiating the buyout down. The longer it drags, the worse this is going to be for them. And they need to sell tickets and put butts in seats next year to help pay for a mega-million arena reno that's only 3 years old.

(Of note, if you haven't been to the new Fifth Third Arena, I'd recommend it. Fantastic venue. Loud Venue.)

Yeah, the reno is fantastic. What I like most is how more open concept it is. I feel like I'm still in the same room as the game when I'm in line for a beer.

Agreed. I used to argue UD Arena was the best arena in Ohio. I'm not sure I agree with that anymore. Fifth Third gives it a run for it's money. They certainly did a dynamite job on it. In fairness, UD did as well on their reno.

The architect was obviously watching a lot of HGTV and delivered on the "open concept" design.

Reminds me of when Danny Nee had a mass exodus at Nebraska. Brannen's buyout is 5.25M. I'll say it again, if I'm a UC alum don't be asking me for donations.

We know, and UC wouldn't care whether or not you want to donate anyway.

I guess you’re okay with a non profit organization paying millions to buy out a coach. Not to mention that athletics is not the core mission of a university.

If you are not, then you really can’t be a division I college sports fan. The pro sports are for you.

According to a January article Cincy athletics had a $7.7 million surplus last year, so the buyout would eat a big chunk of that. And who knows, maybe Cincy has a millionaire who wants a different coach and can throw money into the pot, like IU did. Also, Cincy has apparently made a "seven figure" offer that's less than the buyout; Brannen apparently rejected the offer.

Who said anything remotely close to that? Several professional organizations are non-profit, so I don’t think that argument holds water.

How do you know a bunch of wealthy donors aren't financing the buyout?

Maybe they are. Still, it’s hypocritical and I’ll never understand it or support it.

This is the first open job this year that worries me as it relates to Boals.

A superior league, good history and facilities, last coach making 1.5 million annually -- basically a 3x raise on Boals' 581k, in a region Boals has recruited for a 15 years.

It doesn't look like they will, or should, pursue Boals, but I am surprised that Dennis Gates is apparently a candidate and Jeff is not.

I remember Erik as a player from those UC teams with Van Exel and Cory Blount... The guy was an amazing rebounder and low post scorer for being 6’6” tall.... (Probably a bit shorter than that as well)

Taking a coach like Boals from the MAC, would be beneath the level of their program as they see it.

Thanks for the latest take.

It is getting so we can read the top of a thread and know what the latest pearl ole' giacomo is going to drop on us. At least you are consistent. Stuck in a rut, refusing to listen to opposing ideas and always for your perceived little guy. The 2 percent of athletes that are recognizable need their money because they're getting screwed by the MAN. Screw the other 98 percent of athletes who won't go professional or depend on the money sports to fund their education and their sport's existence. There is a bigger picture out there that is not being addressed while we are changing everything to get less than one percent of all the NCAA's athletes "the pay they deserve". Focusing on the tree in front of you obscures the forest burning on the other side of the tree. You can only understand what you actually seek to understand.

How does allowing athletes who are able to earn off their image and likeness screw over athletes who can't earn money off of their image and likeness?

I'm not sure why we need to support a system where 2% of athletes, by your own admission, are being screwed when there's a simple fix that ensures no athletes are being screwed.

The NCAA defines amateurism and is in no way bound by the definition they created decades ago. They can simply alter what's allowable and let players accept endorsements and earn off of their likeness where applicable. How does that harm the other 98%?

I heard some podcasters (local journalists) here in Cincinnati also mentioning Boals as a possible candidate, though they seemed to think Gates checked the most boxes.

Can we put a rush on a contract extension/raise for Boals?
