In a country with a justice system like ours, I don't think it'll ruin his life as bad as other things could.

I really do feel bad for Akron.  With everything that they've been doing this season, it's a shame that it'll be tarnished by this should he be guilty.  My condolences.

However, JSF and ColumbusCat '11's banter has me rolling in laughter.  My side is hurting like somebody stoned it.

Earlier in the season Alex said that he thought Akron could win the National Championship. I remember thinking, "What is this kid smoking?"

That's about the only really funny follow on here.

Must be something in the air tonight but I also agree with bigtilly (me agreeing with oz and till in one post?!!) that this probably doesn't curtail his chances of playing abroad.  A lot of cultures are a lot more tolerant of the herb than the U.S., regarding it as an acceptable recreational drug.

If it had happened to us it would hurt.  Nonetheless I am not unhappy that this has befallen 'kron.

Without him, 'kron is t-o-a-s-t.

Is his life really ruined though? Jerome Simpson spent 15 whole days in jail for a similar incident.

I feel like Jerome Simpson is an entirely different league, partially because he's a professional athlete and Abreu is under scholarship at a university.  I'm pretty sure if any student got a marijuana trafficking felony conviction at Ohio University they would be expelled.

Now I know that I'm jumping the gun here and everything depends on how his future hearings go,  but if he does get convicted he's sure as gone from the team and university as far as the immediate future goes.  Again, IF he gets convicted of these charges, there will be a marijuana trafficking and possession forever under his record, which makes getting a job really difficult.

From Wikipedia

"Cribbs was suspended from all football-related activity when he was arrested at his home on Jan. 17, 2004. He wasn't allowed to play in the Sept. 4 season opener at Iowa as part of his punishment. Cribbs pleaded guilty to possession charge. Cribbs had originally been charged with trafficking in marijuana. "I've learned that I am responsible for all my actions and during the last five months, the hardest thing has been the fear of not being able to provide for my family, go to school at Kent State and play football," he said."

I don't know how much Cribbs was busted with but he was able to comeback and play for Kent. I would guess that Abreu is done for the season but he could still play next year depending on what happens in court.

I remember Abreu having to sit out a few games at the beginning of last season - don't recall the reason. Quincy Diggs was his replacement at point guard during this time, but alas Diggs was also suspended from the Akron team.

As far as Betancourt, I now understand what Zippy fans meant by the Peuto Rican pipeline to Akron U.

My take from all of this is that the MAC cannot make ESPN headlines when we have a player create a new NCAA record, but as soon as anything bad happens, our conference get's a headline. What a joke!

So, how are they going to figure out how to get Abreu back on the court by next week?

This isn't an ESPN problem, this is a cultural problem with our "news media".  It could also be a problem with our conference not promoting a good achievement the way it should. Could.

Yeah...if I was Zeke (a senior NBA prospect trying to get on the national recognition through NCAA tourney) I'd be beyond pissed.

Sorry JSF.. what got into me ?? It's always a great laugh when a young man's life is ruined. I must have forgot.

"when a young man's life is ruined" or "when a young man has ruined his life?". He is NOT a victim here. He is a big boy and made his bed so now he can sleep in it. It's up to him where to go from here.

The good natured ribbing from opposing fans is the least of his worries.

Completely off topic and I'm going to look like a jerk here but I hate when people say  "I have forgot" rather than "I have forgotten." Yes, I know that technically "I have forgot" is acceptable, but it just sounds horrible.

It makes me want to blow my top. The English language has gone up in a puff of smoke.

This post has been brought to you by the BobcatAttack grammar patrol.

My guess is that we will see Abreu in the MAC tourny final. He will plead down to a misdemenor charge, get court orders diversion classes, and its done. He may have to give up the guy shipping the stuff, but all in all, not a big deal. He will serve a short suspension and be back just in time for us.

This brings up another positive for going to Ohio. Athens has some of the best stuff around...no need to ship in crap from elsewhere and risk Postal Service inspectors intercepting the shipment.

He did not get caught selling a dime bag to an undercover cop, this was 5 POUNDS (2,268 grams).
He may get out of the trafficking charges, but that is still felony possession.

Guys who receive 5 lbs. in the mail receive it from guys with 500 lbs. to mail. I think there is a reasonable chance he can plead both down to misdemeanors if he gives up the source, but he's probably still looking at SOME jail time and will be out of the tournament. You could get that down to a misdemeanor, but not a minor misdemeanor (unless the prosecutor is a major 'kron fan with some serious job security....). This case is too high profile to let it slide that far.
