He is from Puerto Rico and if convicted probably would be deported???  I have to believe he is done for the year.  I saw Dambrot at the Diamond Grill yesterday at lunch and he seemed very happy.  He came over and talked with a number of people at my table who are Akron grads.  He has said more than once the Abreu is the key to the team.

Yah, I'm pretty sure you can't get deported to Puerto Rico. Its part of the United States.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and its residents are U.S. citizens.

Funny part about basketball teams....if he was moving this much ....the rest of the team knew it.....and it is not like there has not been close to this amount in the apartment of one of our own.... be careful about throwing stones.

Lucky I guess that he was alone and none of his team mates were along for the ride while he made the buy/

Not knowing what'll happen in the courts, I'll be the first to say that what'll frustrate me the most is if he ISN'T done for the season. It'd be really lame for the school to restore his eligibility while the process "plays out in the courts."

And count me among those who thinks losing Abreu would be a big loss for Akron. That kid can play. He's the reason they beat us the first time this year. He outplayed D.J. that night.

No, you can't be deported to Puerto Rico.  Just to WV.

Jeff Eisenberg has latched onto the fact that Ohio's chances for the MAC title have improved, not so much for how well Abreu played against us but because of his overall performance this season.

Now we know he prefers grass to turf.

Signs for a package and gets arrested.  Now he can/will say that he simply got a package.  Had no idea what was in it.  Gets reinstated  - innocent until proven guilty.  Heard it here first.  He will be back for the tournament.

Abreu is a big part of what Akron does. I think this is a huge blow to them, on par with UNC losing Marshall last year. Size is nice, but you need somebody to get the big guys the ball.

How does that work in a controlled buy situation?

It's hard to take pleasure in watching a kid's life blow up.

that does not mesh with a controlled buy. where usually the officer buys from him.

no report - yet - of money changing hands. Simply that he accepted a package.  Kid looks like he threw away pr ball in Europe.  Sad.

I feel bad for the kid.  Not sure what his background was but sometimes that easy money can be tough for a guy to pass up.  Especially for a guy who has done great things for the school and has brought more value to the school than the school has given to him with a scholarship.... Yes I am saying that some students athletes get the raw end of the deal by only getting a scholarship when they make their schools millions.

I mean i see what you are saying, but he was trafficking drugs (allegedly-in Jim Rome voice). If he was wrongly accused then I have sympathy but when you are a drug dealer, dont do the crime if you cant do the time

How many on this board have "illegally" downloaded music or a movie?  What about streaming a game from an unauthorized website?  If so please check your obnoxious moral standards at the door.  After all, in some states this substance is legal( Yes I know the amount is a factor)

Elton Alexander at the PD:  "Abreu has been suspended until the outcome of the investigation is complete."  That could be some time.

I can see his lawyer arguing that he only accepted the package but didn't know what was in it, especially since it was a pot-sniffing dog that tipped them off instead of some informant or some lengthy, thorough investigation. He could claim he doesn't know the sender and had no idea what was in the package.  Of course, investigators can subpoena USPS, UPS and Fed Ex records to see if any other large packages were delivered to him from the same sender or the same location.

I understand that it is serious.  Kids just make some really stupid decisions sometimes.  He'll be paying for this, in a way, for the rest of his life.

Equally sad was Akron's QB, Jacquemain, who was stealing from teammates to support a drug habit. He died from his addiction a couple of years later.  Just tragic.

Really? You're comparing downloading music to buying kilos of marijuana? And it's not legal in Ohio so what does that have anything to do with it?

Can't imagine how his teammates feel.  I remember seeing an interview about how bad it hurt to see Ohio doing so well in the NCAA Tourny.  He was proud, but said it made him cry every night.  I thought to myself that this kid wants it BAD.  He is going to do whatever possible to get there.  I guess he wanted it bad, but was willing to take big risks along the way.  Like much of Zips Nation, he may have thought he was already there.

Earlier in the season Alex said that he thought Akron could win the National Championship. I remember thinking, "What is this kid smoking?"

Is stealing worse than selling drugs?  To me stealing is worse than selling a recreational drug....
