Jason has earned this so I hope he chooses to go. It is his time and he will shine! Then Boals can go about the business of getting us an athletic Huerter type of guy. Big with 3 point shooting! We have bigs and guards. We need 6 foot 6 or bigger who can shoot. I am sure there are some in portal waiting.
While I wouldn't mind seeing another wing player added, we have 6'6" or bigger who can shoot: BVP & Jason Carter, and at 6'4"/6'5" Ben Roderick.

Sports Illustrated looks at college stars considering the draft and should they stay or go.

https://www.si.com/college/2021/06/30/nba-draft-decisions...

Preston is the second player they review

Jason Preston, Ohio | Junior

Preston was one of the top players in five-on-five competition at the combine and significantly raised his profile in NBA circles, now profiling as a likely top-40 selection if he stays in the draft. This is a consequential decision from a college basketball standpoint: If he stays at Ohio, the Bobcats will be one of the top mid-major teams in the country, and Preston should contend for national awards as one of the top guards anywhere. His ascent over the past few years has been remarkable. He’s built real momentum around the NBA, and the question is whether he wants to ride that into the draft and a likely guaranteed contract now, or whether it makes more sense to put up big numbers, win in college for another year and try to further improve his stock. Preston has won a lot of people over this week, making this one of the more intriguing decisions still to come.

From all indications it would appear that JP looked good at the combine. Most of the pundits are hinting toward JP leaving. But no one knows what the scouts think or said to JP during these 2 days. They probably did not see his total game i.e.free throws, driving to the hoop etc. From what I saw he was always outside passing to others, maybe a few under the boards for a rebound, that's it.
I certainly hope that he does not make a rash decision based on the press reports.
He needs to return to campus, talk with coach, then make his decision based on any feed back from team scouts or management.

I think Jason gets drafted and goes to the NBA. That's what my gut says now. But here's my question. What if he hears from draft experts that he's got a lot of intangibles, but they want to see him perform against top talent all year long? Could they encourage him to transfer to a Power school? Could the NBA scouts use their connections to arrange that, making a trip by Preston into the portal quite brief? It's likely all about what advice he's getting right now as he goes through the process and I think it's quite possible he's getting lots of different perspectives.

NBA Scout: You're likely at top 50 pick right now. Maybe a year of development gets you into the top 30. However, I think a year of grinding through an ACC season could move you possibly into the lottery.

If he hears something like that, wouldn't he be a fool not to listen?
If he wants to transfer, he’d have to be in the portal by EOB Thursday, right? (At least if the article i read, stating a transfer deadline of July 1st for this year, is still correct)
Saw something on ESPN about the deadline being Wed., July 7.

July 7th is the deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft and return to school.

But if a player stays in the draft and is NOT drafted there is still an easy path for them to return to school - as long as they have not signed with an agent.

Yes if undrafted, but I think you may not be able to if you are drafted (agent hired or not).

It does not seem clear to me though, so I could definitely be wrong.

I am guessing he will be drafted. I want what is best for JP. So either way I'll be happy.

According to this article, they have until July 19th to withdraw their names.

Selfishly would have loved to see him come back but he's earned this. Now have a reason to watch the NBA. Good luck, Jason and thanks.

My thoughts exactly. Haven't watched the NBA in years and now have a reason to do so.

Jeff Goodman tweeted his landing spot would be 25-35. If that is the case, gotta go, especially if someone in the 20's really likes you.

The teams in that range are:

25. LAC
26. Denver
27. Brooklyn
28. Philly
29. Phoenix
30. Utah
31. Milwaukee
32. Knicks
33. Orlando
34. New Orleans
35. Oklahoma City

From my perspective, you want to avoid Orlando and OKC like the plague. The Knicks were better this year, and have a need at PG, but they're historically a bit of a dumpster fire. Though selfishly that would be the most fun for me as a Knicks fan.

Otherwise, there's a lot of talented teams in that range.

I've rooted against the Lakers for over 40 years. From Wilt to Kareem and Magic to Shaq and Kobe to LeBron. It'll be difficult but I'll try to root for them if that JP's destination.

If the consensus is correct for JP he should go in the 40s. At #45 he could go to the Celtics. That would be a good spot. The Celtics typically are patient with their draft picks. Ainge was patient to a fault. They just traded out Kemba Walker and the writers here say they would like to move on from Marcus Smart. That opens the PG spot. Definitely a need for a back up. JP looks good in green.

I will freely admit, I don't watch a ton of NBA hoops, but I have watched a lot of the playoffs this summer. I've been thinking, what's a reasonable comp to what Jason Preston could be at the next level? What about a Cameron Payne type of player? He's coming off the bench for Phoenix, backing up Chris Paul, playing 15-18 minutes/game. He hits the occasional 3 and averages about 8-9ppg and 3-4apg off the bench. Energy and decent production from a 6th/7th man role. I don't personally see that as an unreasonable comp for JP, or a slight against Jason. Any other thoughts?

Thinking on it, I'm so glad he's going. It is what's best for him and also best for OHIO. A possible 1st round or early 2nd pick? Yes please. That's a heck of a recruiting pitch.

Plus now Boals can light a fire under the team's butt with more of an underdog narrative since we'll get less media accolades now that JP is gone.
