I thought he looked like the best player on the team in the second half, especially the 4th quarter. He made them honor his drive and he played great defense. I never remember his defense being that good. I think he showed that he could be lethal in the two man pick and roll, with a legit big. He missed some layups and free throws, he could have easily scored 20. The steal with less than 10 seconds was a thing of beauty. Something tells me that he and Brian Shaw will be doing a lot of work together.

https://www.si.com/nba/clippers/news/takeaways-from-the-l...

"Preston had somewhat of a breakout game against the Lakers, scoring 12 points, dishing out four assists and only turning the ball over once in 26 minutes.

After not drawing a single foul in the first two games, Preston was able to get to the stripe five times against the Lakers, knocking down three of his attempts. After the game, Head Coach Jeremy Castleberry made a mea culpa for Preston’s slow start.

“He’s really crafty in pick-and-rolls,” Castleberry said of Preston. “Part of that was on me in those first two games, not putting him in positions to actually do those things. Game 3, I was able to...put him in those positions, and he was successful.”

Preston came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring nine of his 12 points. He had a beautiful up-and-under finish at the rim in transition. In the final seconds of the game, he was able to read the passing lanes and come up with a steal before being fouled in transition (he would make both free throws).

Preston’s success is welcome, as he was looking the least polished of the three rookies through two games."

Thanks for the heads up! I’m watching it now. He definitely looks like he belongs.

“Preston needs to be more discipline when he leaves his feet to pass.” Dude must not have watched JP in the past…

All BA posters know JP has been guilty of this since his freshman year in the green and white (probably going back further). Doesn't mean it's not a concern now that he's in the association.

Edit: announcer expounded on this again in the last minute of the game when JP got caught leaving his feet and throwing the ball away in a close game. Can't agree more with the announcer as JP progresses in his pro journey.

Space in the Clippers' point guard room. They traded Beverly, Rondo, and big man Oturu to Memphis for Eric Bledsoe.

Yeah I agree on that last pass, not a good look but he makes his best passes when in the air.

Clippers Twitter and Reddit talk seems convinced a trade offloading multiple contracts is imminent.
You called it, the Clippers just traded two point guards for Bledsoe. https://apple.news/A7RGlsNyiTzCSY3e2HD5HVg

Some might view this as a lack of confidence in Jason…trading for an experienced PG who will get most of the minutes. I see the complete opposite. They are OK with reducing their number of options because Jason has shown he can play and flashed his potential in a highly competitive setting.

it’s a very good thing. he just went from 4/5 string to 3rd string. not going to ever be 2nd string (barring major injuries) for this year’s clipper team. this is just fine for him.

Nice call Shabamon

Love it.

No G-League for JP to start the season.

Amazing what happens when the coach allows JP to be JP.

I also think that his teammates finally figured out the last couple of games that allowing Jason to take some control made them perform (look) better. The offense ran through him more and more with each game. The coach probably had something to do with that too but, even if he did, the results reinforced that approach.

Jason would have had 10 assists at halftime if his teammates could make open shots.

Hey! Allie Laforce is the sideline reporter.

Channing Frye should do color work somewhere in the regular season if he isn't already. He's having a blast doing the last summer league game of the night.

Isn't Bledsoe a 2 guard? Wouldn't the trade just leave Reggie Jackson in-front of Preston at PG?

Yeah, Bledsoe is not usually a 1, but he’ll probably fill in there, especially when Jackson gets hurt again.

Anyone heard any more about how the Clippers are viewing JP now? From my amateur armchair perspective, I think the Summer League was mainly a positive for his chances.

I would think since they traded for him early in the 2nd, gave him two years guaranteed money, then traded away Rajon Rondo and Patrick Beverly after that they’re planning on him contributing throughout the season. Would imagine he’ll be picking up minutes behind Reggie Jackson/Eric Bledsoe, and Bledsoe doesn’t exclusively play PG.
