Weird little detail: When Sears hit the deck, the entire team sprinted to pick him up.

Just a little detail. Sometimes it’s one guy or half speed. They all sprinted.

I might be reading too much into that but I like little details like that as a read on where a team is.

Great effort by Cats. Sears was really awesome, didn't doubt that. Hell of an effort by Carter on both ends of the floor. Another tough mid-major matchup at CSU Saturday.

Have been seeing this more and more for the past few years. Leaves me to think that coaches are demanding this from their players, from middle school through college.

BVP: Just a man.
Brod: Way off. Will figure it out. If he was on, we win by 25.
Carter: Defense...defense. Impressive.
Sears: Seeing the court last season and going against Preston every day in practice for a year prepared him for a night like this.
Brown: Where did the shot come from?
Clayton: 17 years old. Long..lean and athletic and he wasn't scared. Really showed me that we have something here.
Schmock: Just has to give 6-8 minutes a game and play smart. Doesn't have to be a hero
McDay: Team player and if he's OK with coming off the bench it makes us better.
DW3: We can't have nice things. If he's in the mix....this team has top 25 potential.
Jeff Boals: Enjoy watching him coach. Maybe he wants to become the greatest coach in Ohio history. But if we have the season I think we'll have, the big boys will come knocking.

Huge win that will get noticed in the eyes of national college hoops writers. Let's keep it going.

At first blush Belmont appears to have an intimidating team having had a 26-4 record last year and most if not all their starters returning. A closer look at last year reveals that they didn't play any power teams and lost to Morehead twice, the second time in the conference finals thereby missing the NCAA tournament. Our resume matches up pretty well considering the level of competition we played and the number of returners plus Jason Carter. It gives me a little confidence that we should be able to hold our own if not actually outplay them. Having been a fan for many years, I know better then to be too optimistic since the disappointments have been many.
Ohio lost 8 games last year. Per KenPom ratings our worst loss was #130 Bowling Green. That #130 BG team was ranked higher than any game Belmont played. Morehead St (#134) was their highest ranked opponent. And as mentioned above they lost to them twice. We played 14 games against teams ranked higher than that. That being said, Belmont is tough. They play a much tougher schedule this year so picking up a victory will be good for our resume.
Look at Bellarmine, a small school transitioning to D-1. This year they play:

Purdue, Gonzaga, UCLA, West Virginia. Last year Duke and Notre Dame.

Belmont plays unranked LSU this season. They played no "name" teams last season.

That is one of many reasons I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them get their rear ends handed to them tonight. The Bobcats doing it with four players in double figures makes it even more fun. Belmont will be in for a rude awakening in the MVC. Indiana State, Loyola Chicago, Southern Illinois, etc. won't be afraid of playing Belmont. Not even. Play tough defense and rebound and defend the three point line... that is like kryptonite to Belmont.

Would have been nice to see Akron stop the inbounds play tonight to bring the MAC a victory against a top 25 to go along with well wishing to Belmont.

Belmont plays in a league that is falling apart.

Most of their wins this year will be pretty meaningless and without RPI adding value. Thus, for that and other reasons, I decline to pull for them.

I seem to remember a certain tussle and bench clearing incident that resulted in a couple techs or ejections against EMU (?) because the refs thought our guys were about to gang up on someone, but they went to get someone off the floor.

My wife and I were (trying to) remember that same incident last night as well. Wasn't it Simmons that went down under the bench of EMU (maybe WMU?) to kick things off? When the dust settled our opponents put 10 pts on the board in less than a second due to all the free throws?

It definitely is taught and earlier than middle school. I don't think my son has been on a team that didn't expect the players to do it.

It was home against Bowling Green. As I remember it, the game was close at that moment and then the call awarded BG a ton of tech free throws and that was the ball game.

That was it. Happened with just under 4 minutes to play.

shabamon, the Bobcat fan with the photographic memory. He can tell you what Jerome Tillman shot from the floor in Ohio's second meeting against Akron during Tillman's junior season. I, on the other hand, can't tell you the final score from last night's win versus Belmont without looking it up.

Probably not good. We lost that one. Akron had a dunk contest on us. Smallish crowd even for a weeknight as that was the same date as the Ohio primary election. Fox News did a live broadcast from the little theater in Baker Center that morning. Seriously!

I stopped covering high school about two years ago. The teams I covered only tended to have all four sprint over when a guy got hit hard under the basket or ran into the stanchion. It usually was one other teammate.

I have memories like these and then I can’t remember how old I am sometimes.

It drives my wife nuts, this selective sports-based photographic memory.

I can remember what songs I played in the car driving to a game in 1996, but forget what I ate for lunch yesterday.

Man that was fun and it felt so great to be back in the Convo. A piece of my soul was missing all last season. 6,123 announced attendance, not far off reality. The student turnout was good. I will continually be disappointed in their performance, but numbers wise they were pretty dense on up to the 200 level behind the student section. They seemed to wake up a little bit in the 2nd half just by it being such a great and intense game. Half of the students on campus are experiencing their first year with games in the Convo...hopefully we hooked a few tonight.

I am happy to be back in my self-appointed role as President of the Jason Carter fan club. Was so nice to have him back and see all the things that I loved in his first go-around with us...namely his defense and overall positioning and feel. But obviously the discussion from last night was his scoring and shot making. Fun fact...he never scored over 20 points in his 2 years at Xavier. His role was definitely more narrow at Xavier (defense/rebounding) and I think he is happy to be counted on for more again.

Mark Sears, my goodness. It is obvious we lose on the distribution side going from Preston to Sears, but I think we take a step UP in the scoring/shooting side of things. 10 for 11 from the field and perfect from 3! He has such a great feel for the hoop. We are so spoied with the point guards we've been blessed with the past 12 years.

BVP, not much to say other than I love that dude. That ankle breaking step back 3 when we were pulling away was the play of the night for me.

Yes Roderick had a bad night shooting but I saw a few things defensively and ball skill wise that I liked. I am not worried about his shooting.

Miles over Lunden...I didn't expect it but I like it. Miles has great ball skills, I would have no problem with him running point.

Team looked comfortable and confident, couldn't have asked for a better night.

That was a lot of fun. Not much else to say that hasn't already been said.

I do feel like (small sample size, 2 games) Miles Brown has really looked good to start the season. I wasn't sure about him starting over McDay but right now I like it. Miles has looked good shooting the ball, looks more confident. I like it.
