Bleacher Report projects him as going to the Pistons with the #42 pick. Here's what they said:
Scouts love Preston's feel for the game and IQ. One noted how when other prospects were confused about the rules of certain combine drills, Preston helped explain them and organize his group. There are obvious questions about his potential to create separation at the NBA level, but one team in the second round figures to see a worthwhile gamble.
****
Obviously, it would be great for him to stay at home at Ohio, but if he can get a good deal with an NBA team he should consider it. A lot can happen, good or bad, during the course of a season, so the risk is always there. I just hope he's getting good counsel.
GEEZ, if NBA teams allegedly love Preston's "feel for the game and IQ," what must they not like for him to be there for the taking pick No. 42? I'll say it again, if the NBA really believes in a player, they'll show him the love and take him in the first round. Frankly, the only reason they take guys in the second round is because there is a second round. The majority of second-round players aren't around three years into the league, if they even make it at all.
Please be advised this is in no way criticizing the league. For at this present time, with his present skills, the NBA may be right to question Jason's ability to be a serious rotation player as a rookie, which is the expectation for first-round picks. So I have no problem with their projection. And whatever Jason decides to do, I wish him the best.
There is an aspect of his decision that is different than probably 90 percent of the players who have to make the choice of staying in school or coming out: the mentally of the star player who is accustomed to being the star. I would tend to believe a player who has been The Man since high school and is used to being The Man would be more likely to bet on himself and return to the team believing he can significant improve his draft position. A baller who this is relatively new to, maybe not so much...
