That would be an interesting fit. Jamal Murray runs the point, but he's not really a true PG. They got good minutes out of Campazzo, but he's already 30.

Denver has pick #26 and no picks in 2nd round.

The only sad thing about this is one of our greatest players ever played in an empty arena for much of his career.

It really will be a flex to say you saw him play live as a Bobcat if he turns into an NBA star.

I saw him play live -- but not last year, and when he was a freshman I made a post where I said that I thought he might turn out to be as good an assist guy as DJ. Several BAers said I had uttered a blasphemy.

[I've tried to find that thread, but BA's search engine is so weak I was unable to. Perhaps, a more skilled searcher can find it. Bumping it would be be interesting and result in a crow fest, and for once I'd be serving and not eating. I've eaten a lot of crow on this board over the years, but you know even a blind squirrel gets lucky every now and then.]

Didn't find the initial thread, but here's one where you reference it: https://www.bobcatattack.com/messageboard/topic.asp?FromP...

The trick is the use Google to search BA.com -- in a Google search you can search only a specific site by starting with site:bobcatattack.com then the keywords you want to search in quotation marks.

This is the biggest bummer for me. I feel like we were cheated out of two years with JP of watching him and two years of getting to the NCAA Tourney with Sophomore year MAC tourney wiped out and not playing next year. Was lucky to see him play in Myrtle Beach two years ago.

I won't pass up on watching him play live in the NBA when possible.

Thanks for finding that old thread, I didn't know SBH was Gus Johnson.

The Cavs, who supposedly like Jason very much, are interested in adding more picks.

One of Ohio's most talented players no doubt but he didn't have top Ohio career numbers during his time in Athens. Unless he does with court efficiency stats of some type.

If you get picked in the first round of the NBA Draft, you’re one of our greatest players. It’s not really an argument I really entertain. I didn’t say he had one if the best careers at OU. I said one of our greatest players.

I’d frame it like this. DJ Cooper had a better career. Preston was the greater player.

I wouldn’t say that at all. The NBA is looking for specific skill sets to fill out a roster. There are many variables involved. In all sports there have been many great players with outrageous stats in high school and college that never made it to the next level. There have been many physical specimens in the NBA who couldn’t make a foul shot.

The very specific skillset the NBA is looking for is being really good at basketball.

Jason Preston is not a physical specimen who is being drafted for being 7-foot- 3. He’s not very fast. He is not an elite shooter. He is — literally—being drafted because he is great at the skills that make a player a good basketball player aside from measurables.

I don’t have time for an argument over whether a guy who is chosen in first round of the NBA Draft at a mid-major basketball program that goes to the NCAA tournament once every 10 years is one of our best players we’ve produced.

It’s insulting and stupid. And worst of all pedantic to a level that blows my mind.

Sorry, but you can stack his last two years up statistically against anybody this side of Gary Trent. He's not going to be at the top of career lists because he only played three years and in his first year Saul decided to hand the keys to the team to Taevion Kirk, a decision that cost him his job. If you don't think Jason is one of the best players to ever suit up at Ohio I have to assume that you are arguing just to argue. DJ Cooper is unquestionably one of the best and over their final two seasons Preston averaged more points, rebounds and yes assists than DJ did. And I don't think anybody is going to argue that Jason had nearly as good of a supporting cast.

There's a difference between greatest and best or most talented. "Great" is less tangible; it's more of a feeling - who left the greater impact on the program and its culture. I would agree that Jason is a better and more talented player than DJ Cooper, but Cooper is the greater player IMO, and is the most deserving former men's basketball player to having his jersey retired to the Convo rafters.

When I was just a little boy, I asked my mother what will I be, will I be handsome, or a first round pick, she told me tenderly….

Some more pieces written about JP:

https://sircharlesincharge.com/2021/07/19/nba-draft-simil... /

This guy thinks he’s a top-ten in the draft and potential all-star talent.

https://soaringdownsouth.com/2021/07/20/atlanta-hawks-blo... /

This one claims he was at the top of a list of players worked out by the Hawks on Monday. They have the 20th and 48th overall picks.

This talk that Preston will be a a Top 20 pick I don't see support for that in the mock drafts online. This mock draft I have here doesn't even show him in the first two rounds.

https://www.nbadraft.net/nba-mock-drafts /

I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't drafted though I wouldn't blame him either for staying in the draft and going the pro route instead of taking a gamble on a college season and getting injured. I don't think his draft stock would be any higher next year.

That said definitely one of the best pure basketball talents Ohio's had in the program.
