And no appearance from Burris or Evans at all...
At least Sheldon played 24 mins and went 0-fer with one board.
We actually make a little run to get within 13 and then inexplicably Boals brings in Sheldon with 6 minutes to go and the lead climbs quickly to 21.

What does Sheldon have on Boals?

Make it make sense.

Thank God, I didn’t go see this! Don’t have the U so I just was listening to it on the radio. Like Shaba I consider driving from Cincinnati to see this game. Thank God, the weather is gonna be so ugly than I stayed home. Given how atrocious this team plays I doubt I’m gonna go to any games the rest of this year. Not worth wasting my time on them. Certainly doesn’t look like next year will be any better. It probably is time to look for a new coach. As much as I hate to say, I just don’t think Boals has “it“. He hasn’t recruited a “team” of player since he has been here.

Interesting postgame presser. Boals is asked point blank if he’s considered cutting Sheldon’s minutes, and he essentially ducks the question (around the 13:30 mark). Rare to see a student journalist bring something like this up so directly: https://youtu.be/tEKeCiQ1O_Y?si=jG9rVte2J8tq9CHH

Sheldon doesn't score and gets torched on defense. I'd really like to know why Boals thinks he needs to give him 30 minutes/game. Back of the envelope math tells me he's, at best, a -10 player. Probably worse than that, actually.

I'm not sure that 4 points is "coming up huge" unless it's on the "Nate Springs is the next Kevin Durant" scale.

20% from three while allowing 43% from three. Lyles and Mahaffey have almost as many rebounds as our entire team.

The next coach may not want the "one stop shopping" trio from Reynoldsburg. A good coach could go into any major metro area and find three guys as good or better in his sleep.
I meant in comparison to our starters. Elliott is solid. Would hate to lose him. He is Lundo McDay (forever lost to The Upside Down).
Huh? I think you might be in the upside down.

Was there, unfortunately. That was men against boys, not only physically but especially mentally. Including head coaches. Not sure I can remember a more embarrassing performance than tonight. Oh yeah, probably George Mason earlier this season.

We were down 13 when Conners missed a layup. Does that make sense?

Ajay Sheldon
24 minutes
2 fouls
1 rebound
O points
O assists

If Boals truly cares anything about this program or his job, he would limit Sheldon to 4-6 minutes per game moving forward the rest of the season.

Give his minutes to “Walking Bucket”, Jordan Fisher, EJ Dozier…I don’t care. How can it be worse?

By all the stats and metrics in 2025-2026, Sheldon is one of the least productive players in all of division-one college basketball. It’s 4 against 5 out there when Sheldon is on the court. Groce didn’t even guard him last night.

I don’t even blame Sheldon. It’s not his fault. He is not a division-one shooting guard. Boals and staff gave him a full scholarship and they haven’t developed him one bit over four years. How is he continuing to shoot off-balanced 3’s when he’s wide open without a defender running at him? This staff continues to put Sheldon out there in a position to fail for 25-30 minutes each game.

What Boals has done with Sheldon over these four years is coaching malpractice at its finest.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

No. Not really. You're saying that Boals pulled Connors for missing a highly contested layup where he ended up on the floor and still almost got it to fall?

But he was fine with Sheldon taking a contested three off the dribble 6 seconds into the shot clock that barely drew iron, and then two possessions later taking a bad mid-range jump shot?

Boals' downfall and eventual firing will be because of crap like this. I have seen him over his OU time give way too much rope to guys like Sheldon and Hadaway and then seemingly show no faith at all in guys like Evans or Burris. Even guys like Nolan Foster or Colin Granger or Seth Towns were in the doghouse for some reason. Hadaway should not have played the entire second half after his first half. Can you imagine being on that bench and seeing Sheldon gey 24 mins? The mindgames are terrible.

Per your next to the last point, from the visuals (and I realize this “should be taken with a grain of salt”), I think I’m beginning to see some evidence of “checking out”. Maybe it’s just personalities and my not actually knowing people and their behaviors.

Certainley there are many issues facing this team:

1) Poor 3 point shooting
2) Poor rebounding
3) Average defense
4) Poor FT shooting

These issues have caused us to have the record we have. It appears we haven't recruited very well.
Should we be allocating more time to 1st year players; i.e. Fisher

Need to work the portal better.

And continuously let his man dribble right past him to the rim without resistance. And also had no clue how to rotate and consistanly gave up helpside.

This type of loss, at home, could be what officially sinks the season. The lockeroom needed a win and more of a reason to believe it belongs in the MAC tourney. A lot of us on here know we don’t and this game, Boals continued misuse of his roster, can have a negative impact on the lockeroom.

Over the next 5 games, WMU at home is the only shot at a W imo. Old Dominion might be 6-15, but it’s an away game (we’re 2-4 on the road so far) and morale might be at an all time low by then. Especially with back-to-back road games at Kent and Buffalo next.

Yea, he mentioned Sheldon’s 23 minutes were low for him and he didn’t see a lot of the 2nd half. Also says Elijah coming back will help — not sure what he means by that. Concludes they need Sheldon, so there was really not direct answer on his minutes.

I thought it was interesting how many times Boals gave Akron credit due to it being a veteran team as if that was the difference last night. Are we not that ourselves? There’s a lot of games logged between Hadaway, Sheldon, Dior, Breath, Pavs, and Simmons.

Boals said Sheldon "has been good defensively." When? Where? Opposing guards drive right by him, whether at the top of the key or, more inexcusable, along the baseline. He's just caught flatfooted on a regular basis. He seemingly can't guard anyone in this league.

I’m guessing Sheldon will be down to 10 to 12 min playing time against Kent this week. Unless maybe Boals is thinking Sheldon can shoot out of his slump?

Elliott is shooting 29% from the field this year. I do not understand why it's such a given that if Sheldon plays less, the minutes go to Elliott.

Our best offensive game of the year was the win vs. UMass where Connors and Burris saw real time. Don't understand these rotations even a little bit.

Boals has his favorites. Whether or not it makes sense to us or for team success, that just seems to be how he operates.
