SI college basketball preview had a feature story on how the defending champs retained key players and brought in important transfers. . . not one mention of AJ.

His brother played 0 minutes as well.

Maybe they both want to come here next season? :)

Did he dress or is he hurt? Lots of reasons this made sense for him...close to home, playing with his brother, etc. but if you don't get on the court does that really matter?

Some guys are content being the 12th man, getting rings and spending time with family. I understand it. With his injury history I didn't even see a Euro career for him. Good on him for enjoying the sun and getting a free education. No ill will on my part and ready to move on with OUr guys this year.

His NIL paycheck cashes whether he sees the floor or not.

This. All the other reasons he transferred are "nice to haves." The checks are all that matter.

Unfortunately it looks like this is what D1 has become. Loyalty and playing for the love of the game is an old man’s dream. It won’t be long until D1 is just the top 36-40 teams so they can have all the money and the rest of the schools can go pound sand.

Yes - He can play with his brother, play near home, cash a solid NIL check, probably experience an elite 8 or final four, and fight for a few minutes per game, or he can stay in Athens, play with hugely inconsistent, and not great players as teammates and play in an unreliable offense where he may get 15 shots, or as likely 7 shots a game, often be asked to play "up" in position, and hope the team somehow catches fire in March and secures the single bid for the league.

And do it away from home and replace the NIL paycheck with....free burrito buggy?

One of the big questions is...how much money? Did he get $50k or $500k?

To him, I'm sure. He's not going to the NBA and I wouldn't be surprised if he hangs them up after this year, given his chronic shoulder issues. He could probably play overseas somewhere but transferring out to be one of the last guys on the bench tells me he probably doesn't have a ton of interest in going that route.

I was just questioning whether or not you know him well enough to know that "the checks are all that matter" to him.

Decision was dictated by mom and dad. And we have at least one other key player whose parents are demanding opportunity to monetize son's college career.

Good to know we have key players now. Excited to see that show itself on the court.

Quote from AJ's father says it all:

"AJ had other options and, truth be told, he really loved playing for Ohio. But the opportunity came up and it was something, as a family, we sat down and talked about."

Pretty sure only Dad's vote counted.

The rush to psychoanalyze players and pretend we have even of a fraction of the data points needed to understand their rationale seems weird to me.

It's okay not to know stuff.

Idk man, I think its totally fair game to have a discussion on why key players leave the program in their final year. Not really that weird at all.
