Hoping for another late surprise regarding Dwight's availability. Last year he was a last-minute NCAA eligibility decision. If what little we know is true, it sounds like he is working out regularly with or around the team which suggests he wants to play this year. Everything I read about ACL surgery says it is 6 to 8 months to full recovery. We don't know for sure when his surgery occurred but May was mentioned and that means he could be 7 months postop.

It is also important to remember that many athletes have had an ACL repair and gone on to great careers including Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Drew Brees, Al Jefferson and Joe Burrow.

I believe that DW was very central to last year's success and his return could be huge.

Nobody would like to see DW3 back in action for the green and white more than me. I preface this with I have no insider info on his injury or recovery - but 8 months is pretty standard for an ACL and most will tell you it takes a full 12 to get the full explosion, range of motion and trust back. So with that, I don't see any circumstance where we see him back in January. Likely February at the earliest.

The question at that point will be, where are we in the standings, and is it worth it to burn his last remaining year on just a handful of games and a tourney run when he'll be less than 100%, or is it wiser to just chalk up this season and hope to get him back fully healthy for next year?

I think a lot of that depends on how the MAC treats us in January.

And another factor is how things go with COVID cancelations.

Healthy next season? That would be pretty ambitious. 6th year grad student is pretty unique, I'd say. He getting a PHD? At this point, he's probably thinking Europe.

I see that was your first post so I am a unsure of what I am getting into in responding. Maybe you felt the need to chime in here because you know Wilson and you know his intentions and in that case why am I responding. Maybe you are troll trying to stir up trouble and in that case why am I responding. But hopefully and probably you an ordinary Ohio basketball fan so in that case my two cents is:

6th year guys existed due to injury redshirts before COVID. With last yeat not counting as a year they are not that uncommon. In fact, Jason Carter is one on our roster this year. If BVP comes back next year I think that he would also be one. So, without knowing much about Wilson and BVP's priorities I don't think that it is unreasonable to think that they might come back. It is certainly happening with other players. That doesn't mean that they will. Wanting to get on with life is quite understandable.

6 months is the absolute minimum to be cleared to play but it comes at a risk. The sooner you come back the more likely you are to tear it again. My son's surgeon recommended a full year recovery but he said it all depends on what your situation is. My son's surgery was July 7th and he was cleared to play in the middle of May of the following year and everything went perfectly. Even then he played limited minutes when he came back. It was a full year before he felt entirely comfortable pushing himself. Not saying that Wilson won't be effective at the 6 month mark, it just wouldn't surprise me if he's back later rather than earlier especially at his size.

Agreed. Although I've seen recent video of him practicing / dunking in the Convo I believe it's likely he misses the year out of precaution. Crossing fingers somehow he comes back for a super super senior year. Would be so awesome if he and BVP came back. ONE MORE YEAR!

Did Dwight earn an undergraduate degree from James Madison? If so, why was his eligibility to play last year up in the air? If his undergrad is with Ohio, it is far from unreasonable to think he will still be working on a master's degree into the next academic year. If that's the case, I think there are several reasons why it's better for the program and for Dwight to sit the rest of this year out and return next year.

The way we're playing this year, I'd almost rather have DW3 sit out and come back. Next year, unless Boals uses the McDay scholarship on an experienced grad big, we are going to have a tough time down low. With DW3, holy cow -- mix him in with Miles, BRod and Sears and our incoming studs AJ Brown and EJ3 -- that's a winning recipe. It would allow AJ Clayton to keep getting stronger yet play a role as a stretch 4 and it will allow Ezuma time to mature as well instead of having to be thrown into the fire without much this year.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Dont you remember your first time? :)

I like DW a lot, and they're definitely missing his inside game. Especially with the way OU plays. I think he has a chance at continuing his career after OU. I don't think it's stirring up trouble, It's only my opinion that he might be leaning towards a career in Europe, than rushing back this season or returning for 22-23.

Hope to see him this season as I think OU has a chance to make another run, but it will be tougher without him inside.

If cleared to play and Boals thinks DW3 can help win the MAC regular season top spot then I say burn his eligibility. Tomorrow never comes. All sports might be shut down next year, he could get hurt, he could become McDay, Boals might be gone, like the previous "new" poster said, he could go for the money Europe/Asia like a Preston. WIN NOW and let Boals worry about how to replace him for next year.

Nailed it.

Next year is never a given or guaranteed.

If DWIII is healthy and he can only play 5-10 games...I say go for it this year.

We all have confidence in Boals in finding another player next year.

I'd be ok with either option. I'd be happy if DW3 comes back for 5 to 10 games for the stretch run but ONLY if he's 100 percent or close to 100 percent. I'd also be ok with him staying another year. Picture him in a starting lineup with Sears at point, Miles at the 2, BRod at the 3 and Clayton at the 4 with DW3 at the 5. Then the bench could have EJ4, AJB, Towns, Ezuma and a stronger, mature Granger. Pretty awesome. That's assuming Hadaway and Sheldon won't be fighting for minutes or that Odeludon doesn't get better which he may.

Or BVP at the 4.....
