Is Mark eligible for MAC freshman of the year since his eligibility is still that of a frosh? Also, along that same line, has a freshman ever won MAC Player of the Year? Sears is off to a white-hot start this year. He’s certainly fun to watch.

Gary Trent was MAC player of the year as a freshman, and as a sophomore, and as a junior...

He is not a freshman in any way, he is a sophomore. The bonus Covid years is tacked on to the end and people have been referring to those such as Jason Carter as "Grads" or "Fifth Years."

For my money, this young man is the MVP thus far. All the skills. Had to replace an NBA draft pick. Take him away and we would be in a tough spot.

He ranks high in the conference in several categories. Right now, I think POTY would be a two player race between Mark and Ryan Rollins at Toledo, with Miammi's Dae Dae Grant as a dark horse.

Although in truth he's not the most valuable player on our team.

Actually, that isn't always the case and perhaps that is not the most common way they are referred. Just like if you have a redshirt your class doesn't advance on how you are listed on a roster it looks like most schools are listing that way. SC-Upstate has Floyd Rideau listed as a freshman even though he played in nearly every game last year. Ohio's men's roster is NOT listed like that though. Sears is listed as a SO, Brown and Roderick JRs, and BVP as a SR and such. The women's roster is listed the typical way. Johnson is a JR. Mace and Pope are still Freshman even though this is their 3rd year on the roster. I also think the football team did it the more normal way. Rourke played in all of the last three years but I think he was still listed as a FR. It seems to me that the later way is most likely become the standard next year.

I'm sure it is the wild west for how teams/media are handling it but conceptually for me it makes no sense for the way SCUS is listing it. Redhsirts are different, you had very limited or no action and therefore you "re-do" that year of eligibility. This is an extra year completely so players should be listed as normal and anyone taking advantage of that 5th year should be listed accordingly.

Can't wait until 2025 when we can stop worrying about this oddity that monkeys with everything.

Guys Mark Sears is our MVP. He is our most reliable and complete player and the one guy we cannot afford to lose.

I don't know if BVP or Sears has been the MVP. I think after today I am leaning Sears. I think both have a good chance to be first team all MAC. I am not thinking that Sears is headed for the NBA anytime soon. He has to become a better passing PG for that to happen.

I just hope that Boals is back next year along with the whole recruiting class that is lined up, BVP is back, if Wilson can't go that he allowed to come back and chooses to do so.

Sears shot 85.1 from the line as a true freshman. After today he has to be well over 90% this season. Nick Kellog holds the Ohio season record at 88%. If he doesn't get that this season he could have three more seasons to take a crack at it. For all that has been said I don't know if it has been mentioned that he could be the best free throw shooter in Bobcat history.

The career record is Dave Jamerson at 84.6%. He is well ahead of that right now.

Likely - Unless someone else really performs well in More than just one game this week. 33 Pts, 6 OFF RBs/8 TTL RBs, 2 STLs, 3 ASSTs (though 3 TO's) - Plus Definitive Player to get the win for the game....

With the cancellation of tonight's NIU game, there are no more games this week. Only one other player scored more than 20 points. Ryan Rolling had 23 pts, 6 reb, 3 ast and 3 stl in a beat down of Marshall.

It is fascinating that a few years ago we had a Sophomore point guard who was breaking out as an elite ball distributor but needed to work on being a scorer / outside shooter to show he could play at the next level. Today we have a Sophomore point guard breaking out as an elite scorer but needs to work on being a ball distributor to show he can play at the next level. It makes me wish we had seen more of them on the court at the same time when we had the chance given how well their skills complement each other.

Trivia question (without cheating!):
Sears is averaging 18.7 ppg. If he kept that up, who was the last Bobcat to average more than 18.7 points per game for a season?

My first guess stayed in my head and it was wrong. I won't verify my next guess before I post it, so Brandon Hunter?

"Distributing" can be More than assists that are a one "pass/distribute" - Initiating an offensive scheme is just as important even though the final dish that leads to a bucket several passes later may not be an "official" assist....

And if that leads to the PG scoring - who gives an F - It Worked!
