Hard to think of a year when such a solid non-conference record was paired with so many shaky wins. This team has won every game it should but hasn't looked great doing it since Belmont or maybe Cleveland State.

On the plus side, the team has grit and can win in spite of terrible shooting. On the other hand, even the green Kool-Aid drinkers will have legitimate concerns about winning on any given night playing like this -- even against MAC bottom-feeders.

Great to see Roderick hopefully snapping out of his 3-point shooting funk but his starting teammates combined to shoot 2-12 from long range and the whole team was under 30% from deep once again.

What matters most is that the team is 9-2 with the only losses coming on the road against SEC powers. I know we'd have all been delighted with that a few months ago. Let's hope they hit the ground running in MAC play.

I didn't get to see this one, ESPN+ didn't have it... but is is it true they were actually ahead a couple of times in the second half?

Was it just a case of playing down to the competition? Flat due to students gone and an odd time to play a game?? Wassup??

They definitely trailed in the second half. I'd chalk it up 100% to 3-point shooting. USCU hit over 42% and the Bobcats hit 29%. The final score is a story of points at the free-throw line and dominating the offensive glass against a team that doesn't have much size. Not a win any die-hard fans are going to wax nostalgic about, except for what I think was Sears' career high in scoring.

At the point USCU led with about 11 minutes to go, it was more like 50% to 20% from behind the arc.

It was a perfect storm for Upstate coming out of the half; we went cold, they stopped fouling, and for a while they hit every shot they put up. This was a game where we missed Dwight immensely. He would have had a monster game against these guys.

A 22 pt underdog on our court played their A game and it was even for most of the game. But thanks to Mark Sears (or Trevor Noah as my wife calls him), we survive.

Lately, you could say that about many games and Mark Sears. He is definitely carrying more than his share of the load right now.

Man, he’s not as good of a passer as Preston or Cooper (yet), but I think Sears is already a better scorer..,
would have been fun watching them play together this year (but preston absolutely made the right choice)

Because of my immune compromised condition, I have not attended any events with crowds in a long time but I made an exception today knowing the Convo would be empty and after learning there were no high school promotions going on. And of course, that masks were required. Signs to mask-up were posted and announced ("Masks required while seated") including on the main scoreboard.

But about half of the crowd was maskless by the time they sat down. I guess, to some, the covid epidemic must be over.

Some, including apparently the NFL, believe that if you're vaxed and asymptomatic, you're okay. They ignore that if you have the virus, no matter your vax status, you can still pass it along to others. Probably one reason why we're having a spike in covid cases.

Nice lunch today. Brat and Bobcats basketball. On a Tuesday. Weird and fun.

Mark Sears is just a beast. Carries this team for long stretches every game. What can you say. Lucky to have him in green and white.

I feel like Carter and BVP are slumping lately, even if stats say they aren’t.

Roderick hit a huge bomb from the state logo in second half and you could tell he was psyched it dropped. I’m thinking he goes off in January.

And agree, Covid fatigue is real. Most folks are done with masks everywhere I go lately….. including the convo today.

Sears with a Great performance - 6 Offensive boards beyond the 33 career high points.

USC Upstate was on fire shooting several streaks - and played a very aggressive game - They looked much better than I expected them to.

Bend don't break per Boal's continues to work.

Per masks - I still can't believe that there is not stronger enforcement of the mandate down by the bench/the team - why let that risk continue!

I think the concern is that we had a 13 pt lead with under five to go in the half, were outscored 28-14 over the next 12 minutes to go down by one, and needed a 20-pt edge at the FT line to win it. This against a team with a 2-8 record and 312 NET ranking coming into today. And it's not the first time this sort of thing has happened this season (Concordia and St Francis, e.g.). We have much better teams ahead on our schedule that probably won't let us off so easily.

And we won all of those games.

And they were on fire for several stretches from the arc.

And we outrebounded them 39-23. Outrebounded them 13-4 O rebounds.

Won by 15 - line was 20 - Fine with me especially considering how aggressive USC Upstate played and once they had that comeback and lead - we responded as we should have.

The stated potential concern would be the same that UK or LSU had vs OHIO......

I share the concerns but to add some big picture perspective…if you’d told me two years ago that we’d be 9-2 to start the 21-22 season and we played two SEC teams, Belmont and Marshall, I’d have been thrilled.

Also, two yeas ago me would’ve appreciated a head’s up on the whole worldwide pandemic thing.

Was it OUr former staff or the current staff that missed on the USC guy who should have been a Bobcat.

I don't normally eat a lunch so early, but I did before going to the game. Due to this I started to nod off a bit at halftime and during the start of the second - what can I say, I'm getting old. But I feel like the cats, the refs, and everyone except the Spartans were napping right along with me there for awhile.

Last year after 9 games we were 5-4, this year 9-2. Good improvement.
We should be able to be a 20 game winner this year, for sure.

Not a bad comparison. Teams coming off an NCAA appearance and returning most players. I hope this year's team performs a lot better than that 05-06 team did in MAC play. Was that year the unofficial start of "TOS to..."?

I wonder what would happen if half the students showed up to class with no mask. How about a little enforcement in the Convo and if not, take down the signs. Too much hypocrisy for me.

Convo holiday malaise is real.
