I am a townie. Maybe you can see me right behind the home bench in my Canada Goose coat, quite Appalachian indeed.
That's more $$ than I would ever spend on a jacket. To each their own though.

It does get frigid in Chicago. Maybe a good investment if you live there.

I love that we have normal people in our best seats. It’s a refreshing change to most of the people who sit in the premium seats at high majors and pro sporting events who either don’t show up or don’t care.
Hmmm...How would you characterize unnormal people? (just teasing)

Born here, raised here, educated here. You probably wouldn't guess that at a glance, though. There are secret townies amongst you.

How does one become a member of this secret society?

I did some Internet research. It appears that they wear the wrong color green and some tacky bling. They also occasionally vandalize stuff when appropriate.

I think I inadvertently started this debate by simply making the observation that in addition to the best student turnout on a weekday night in years that I thought the townie turnout was up a notch also. For the record, I didn't base this on what people were wearing, save for a certain poster's coonskin cap. I based it on knowing where a lot of grassroots locals tend to sit. We are talking about the first level of the upper bowl on the opposite site from the students extending a little toward the baskets. While not full, there were more people in those seats than I had seen in a long time for a weekday game. Now, not everyone in those seats are townies or locals from nearby places, but a fairly high percentage have been historically. Us hillbillies dress in all sorts of ways. Please don't stereotype us.

A lot of supposed "townies" complain that OUr Home/Convo games schedule is bad because it conflicts with local HS game schedules.

I was wondering about some on the student side at the BGSUCKS game - the section was pretty filled up lower bowl section - and they were pretty lively, much more so than so far this year. Was the annual strong Brazilian student contingent in house?

Watch courtside seats at Miami Heat games. Those are abnormal people.

Note: I, as an extremely socially awkward person, don’t consider myself “normal” in any sense of the word and hold “normal” self-actualized people who are comfortable in their own skin in high regard, so I meant that as no knock on our fans.

Why is this conversation even taking place?
In the game thread, there was something about the number of townies at the game had increased, so I asked started a thread about "how do you spot said townies at the game?" Then a couple of people looking for something to b!tch and whine about about decided b!tch and whine about the question. Then after pointing out a young lady with lime green nails from a google image (and NOT saying there was anything wrong with lime green nails... just pointing out she had them) a certain person had a PMS episode over it. Which was totally predictable. Sort of like the people who tried to pretend there is nothing objectionable about "music" that tells people to go out kill other people.

This is a pretty sad thread. OP making generalizations is pretty bad.

My wife is a townie. Pretty sure you could put her in TN, IN or Chicago and could not tell her from anyone else around her. Weird thread and insular view. Kind of embarrassing that OPs degree says the same thing my son's does across the top. He seems to be drawn back as often as he can get there. Townies are part of the reason.

The "Townies are part of the reason." is interesting to me. I've always felt similarly, and I still think that is a huge part of what makes Athens unique - the diversity of humanity that seems to function really well together. I loved that as a student coming from a pretty small NW Ohio town. My seat neighbor in The Convo for 3-4 years was one of my favorite people to talk to and watch hoops with. 100% Townie. I miss seeing him at the games since he gave up his seats in 2019/20.
