We gonna get an explanation, or do those not in the know need to ask?

It was announced today that all concession stands will be closed immediately. No more drinks or food at the Convo going forward. Basically, the same announcement OSU made concerning their concession facilities a few days ago.

The official email:

Dear University Community,

We continue to monitor the dramatic increase in COVID-19 infections due, in large part, to the Omicron variant. We are prioritizing in-person teaching and learning and have implemented some additional protocols for the beginning of Spring Semester that we believe will help us preserve those essential components of campus life.

Over the past several days, public health experts have seen a significant rise in positivity rates and case counts across the state. Likewise, cases are rising exponentially within the OHIO community, so we are implementing several strong prevention methods across our campuses to help thwart the spread of disease. With that in mind, beginning immediately, the following guidelines will be implemented across our campuses until further notice:

New guidance for in-person events and meetings:

As we have stated before, we will continue to prioritize our in-person classes, but due to the recent increase in the Omicron-related case numbers, when possible, other in-person events, gatherings or meetings should be transitioned to virtual formats.

The University will closely monitor this so that it can be updated as needed.

Food and drinks should not be served at any in-person event, gathering or meeting. Exceptions can be made for third-party space rentals that have already been confirmed, although masking should be strictly enforced. Third-party renters are defined as organizations that are not affiliated with the University. A University department renting event space from another University unit/facility is not a third-party rental.

Concessions will be closed at all University-related events. Water will be available.

Updated Face Covering Requirements:

Ohio University’s Presidential Health Directives require all individuals to wear a face covering in indoor public spaces on OHIO campuses, and on public transportation. Students, faculty, and staff should use N95, KN95, KN94, or surgical masks whenever possible, regardless of vaccination status.

For those who do not have access to the recommended masks, the University will provide a limited number at the beginning of the semester, while supplies last. Masks are available for pickup by Athens-based students at the fourth-floor information desk at Baker Center, on the second and fourth floor service desks at Alden Library, and at the Ping Center. Regional campus students can access masks through Student Services. Masks for faculty and staff on all campuses will be ordered and distributed by the planning unit’s PPE coordinator. Faculty and staff are encouraged to make masks available in classrooms, administrative offices, and other common for individuals who need them.

All employees are asked to remind others of University policies related to face coverings, and it is our expectation that all students, faculty, and staff will take appropriate precautions to help keep our campuses and communities safe, including wearing face coverings as articulated in the Presidential Health Directives.
Updated Testing Requirements

The following groups will be required to complete weekly asymptomatic testing until further notice, with the first test to be completed by end of day on Friday, January 14.

All students living in University housing, regardless of vaccination status.

All student members of social sororities and fraternities, regardless of vaccination status.

All students and employees who have an approved exemption for the University’s vaccination requirement.

All new students and employees who have not yet taken action on the University’s vaccination requirement or are in process.

Vaccinations and Boosters:

All OHIO students, faculty and staff must be vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved exemption. You are required to upload your vaccination record online.

The University strongly encourages all students, faculty, and staff to get a booster shot. Please upload your booster record as soon as possible so that you can avoid quarantine if exposed to the virus. Vaccine/booster clinics are scheduled on the Athens campus every Friday in January. Information about those clinics and where to get vaccinated or boosted anywhere in Ohio is available here.

What to do if you’re feeling sick

If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, regardless of vaccination status, follow steps outlined in our COVID-19 Protocol:

Seek medical attention and complete a COVID-19 Incident Report form. An OHIO COVID Campus Liaison (CCL) will advise you on further steps.

Get tested. Contact a healthcare provider to arrange a test/provider visit
Athens-campus based students: call Campus Care at 740-592-7169.

All other students, faculty, and staff: contact your primary care provider. If you don’t have a primary care provider, a CCL can advise you on options in your area.

Stay home and avoid others. It is important to note that students may need to return home to their permanent address to isolate.

Throughout the pandemic, Ohio University has successfully encouraged our University community to share responsibility for minimizing the spread of COVID-19.

We are proud of our students, faculty, and staff for your efforts to safeguard our community throughout the pandemic, and your continued support is essential as we start the new year.

For more information about Ohio University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, visit the Be Safe Bobcats website. We will continue to keep you engaged and informed as new information is made available.

Best regards,

Lowering your mask to eat popcorn or drink water could potentially spread COVID.

It's simply not worth the risk.

Just putting this out here, feel free to disagree: IMO, the end game by OU is to ban all fans. They know this. But they like to do things gradually to control the anger. When fans are banned, the reason given will be lack of compliance with mask requirements at the Convo, and that they do not have the staff to enforce it. OU and the MAC may use the intermediate step of social distancing, limiting attendance to about 3,000, with priority given to season ticket holders. But season ticket holders will not be able to stay in their particular seats.

I have no info on this. Just my own thoughts. Feel free to disagree.

Eh - speak for yourself. Nothing wrong at all if you feel that way, but doesn't mean it's a universally held opinion.

My sense is that this won't happen. We're in for a very big wave of cases, but if the data on omicron stays as is, hospitalizations and deaths only occur in meaningful numbers amongst the unvaccinated. There's an intermediate step of requiring proof of vaccine to attend that's likely to gain steam as the data on omicron does more and more to illustrate that the path to normalcy requires vaccines.

My takeaway is the opposite. They are doing everything they can to keep attendance viable while recognizing the need to protect public health. After more than two years, we're all tired of watching authorities, governments and businesses figure out how to balance risk, but this step as a sincere effort.

Reading the statement from the president says that nothing but water will be available at any university venue, so I assume that covers Hardwood House and the Rohr Room as well.

Roosevelt said this while at the same time he is the same president who drafted all young males rationed everything, and put restrictions in just about everywhere. Not fearing doesn't mean denying reality. I think As long as your behavior only affects you then you can do what you want but the big thing that we can't allow at this point in the pandemic is Healthcare becoming unavailable because the system is so overwhelmed. If you don't think that's possible than you are simply in denial. Omicron isn't as serious but is so contagious that we can all get it at once and it still overwhelm us. Fortunately. this may burnout fast for the same reason

Going to my first concert since the pandemic this Sunday night, partly because of a vaccine mandate to attend. . . thank you Jason Isbell.

Michigan Athletics announced Saturday a new COVID-19 vaccination/testing policy for indoor sports is effective immediately.

All employees and fans 12 and older at Wolverines home games will need proof of a coronavirus vaccination or a negative test result within 72 hours of the event. Those without either will not to allowed to enter games, such as those at Crisler Center, and results from home testing kits will not be accepted.

The hardships being thrust upon our health care system is overwhelming. My daughter, who graduated from OUr university's school of nursing last May, is seeing it first hand at Nationwide Children's Hospital. While she thankfully doesn't work in ICU (where nurses are quitting in droves) every floor/ward is impacted by loss in the workforce. She comes home after 12-hr shifts (many times extended to 13 or 14 hours) stressed out and pissed off at the unvaccinated. I tell her that things will get better but I think that I'm losing credibility after almost 2 years of trying to assure of this.

Get vaccinated!!

Actually, the data from South Africa and now Denmark indicate that while being vaccinated does provide some protection from getting an Omicron infection, when acquired a vaccinated person and an unvaccinated person generally have the same mild symptoms that typically resolve in a couple of days. Omicron is 70 times more contagious than Delta, which was itself more contagious than earlier strains. The sheer number of new infections will put a strain on the health care system in the short term, but the good news is that in all likelihood this signals the beginning of the end of the pandemic. This how the first SARS virus epidemic ended -- the virus mutated itself out of relevance.

If it's so mild, why are hospitalizations at record highs?

This is the very reason I didn't renew my season tickets. I knew this would happen. Is this going to go on forever? Free vaccines are available. Get a vaccine and live your life.
