Just heard coach Boals tell Russ on the radio that Dwight Wilson's knee hasn't responded the way they hoped it would and he'll most likely "redshirt this year." If I read that properly, that indicates Wilson will come back next season.

Not trying to get ahead of ourselves, but, if Wilson returns to full health and comes back next season, and Ben Vander Plas takes a page out of the Belmont frontcourt and returns as a sixth-year senior, along with the four great-looking recruits we have coming in, while we lose only Jason Carter and Tommy Schmock, and perhaps a transfer or two off the bench.....

.....Not trying to get ahead of ourselves. But WOW!!!!!

I would be really excited at a healthy DW3 back. I think BVP is a stretch. Hasn't he been there 6 years already? DW3 paired with Sears, Rod, Miles and AJ and incoming wings is awesome.

Next year would be BVP's sixth year just like Wilson. This season is the sixth for Carter. Boals said this is Carter's last year, which we know, but he said nothing about BVP. He is such a bright guy that he knows how to take advantage of free college tuition. I think that is a realistic possibility that he could return. We do not know as of now if Wilson or BVP would take up a scholarship. I do not think that the NCAA has finalized that. You'd think that the coaches would want to know by now.

So basically Carter pinch hit for Dwight for a season.

I do expect BVP will elect to come back. This will make for a welcomed challenge for Boals to distribute playing time given how strong a few of those incoming freshmen are.

Kind of a bum deal for all NCAA athletes entering their freshmen season while the Covid year is still active. For example look at AJ Clayton...Without the Covid year, there would be no Carter, BVP or DW3 and he would be a starter playing 30+ mins his sophomore year. As it is, he'll likely be half way thru his eligibility before he sees more than 10 or so a game.

Not a surprise about DW3. But this is the first time that I am starting to believe that Dwight wants to come back and give it one more year which would be incredible. And if BVP comes back for year six…my god…with Sears and the incoming class…just wow.

Please, just enjoy THIS season and the start to the MAC!

Who knows, it could be Oats helping his former team with a Muscle Shoals to Tuscaloosa offer.

In the era of the transfer portal and with mid-majors under constant threat of losing successful players and/or coaches to P5 programs, it is absolutely pointless to ever think about "next year." Savor great times because nothing is assured tomorrow.

I hope Sears is loving his time at OU and doesn't seek more exposure and a higher level of competition.

Good point and trust me...fully enjoying this ride. And yes...let's keep Oats away from Sears. I've thought alot about the Sears situation and potential offers from P5 schools. In our favor is that he just watched Preston make it to the league and get paid. He knows it can happen for him at Ohio, without having to go the P5 route.

Help me out on this:

Carter spent two years at OHIO, then transferred and sat a year.

Carter played two years at X of which one was a COVID do over.

Carter plays 5 years over 6 years. One of those years (this one) comes from the COVID do over.

BVP plays four years at OHIO (no transfer, no redshirt) one of the years is a COVID do over.

BVP plays this year which is his fifth because of the do over (first season was 2017/2018)

Same as Carter without the transfer/sit former rule.

How could BVP get an actual 6th year of playing games(while Carter only plays 5 over 6)? Isn't the rule to get to play 4 years and a COVID year?

Both Carter and BVP had a redshirt year. This is Carter's fifth year of actually playing in games.

Why leave? Serious NIL money. That would be why.

This.

While we'll wonder how this season might have played out with Wilson and McDay in the mix, and while it's similarly tempting to contemplate next year's roster, there is so much to celebrate about the group currently on the court. I love this team and am trying to live in the moment. Go Cats!!

On a side note:

OSU long snapper to return for 7th season in 2022! The Cleve.com article didn't explain how it all worked out as the writer's head probably exploded trying to explain it to readers...

What are the actual odds of him getting “serious” NIL money somewhere else? From sources of information I find looking it up, only 7.5% of D1 men’s basketball players have any sort of NIL deal. It’s actually behind women’s volleyball (although average compensation is lower for them).

Heard that as well. How many schollie players will we have of he comes back? Getting a little crowded, but he would be a key player for sure

If everyone who still has eligibility returns, we would be at 15 scholarships. That includes Wilson, BVP, and Mcday. Schmock and Carter are gone for sure. I'd be counting on some scholarship players not returning, but not sure who or how many.

At this point, there are 19 players that we know of in the picture for next year's roster. Take the 15 scholarship guys and then throw on Frazier, Tenerowicz, Michael Brown, and Ben Estis.

Been torn on this all year. On one hand...you dream about what could have been this year with BVP...Wilson and Carter down low. But with each passing day, would we rather have a DW3 for 30 games or 10 games or less? I actually think it works better that we have him next year for a full season. If so, damn...this loaded team just got more loaded and don't get me started on if BVP returns. That would be simply amazing. You honestly have a legitimate top 25 team returning with all of those pieces. Also, I have to believe at least one Bobcat goes into the portal...if not two...after this season. It's going to happen every year in today's college hoops world.

Correct me if I am wrong on what NCAA rules are definitely decided or if you think that I have anything else wrong. Per Pataskala, Schmock is out of eligibility so I fixed that. Carter was the only guy who I was 100% sure will have exhausted his eligibility. That leaves 20 total guys counting potential walk-ons. Since class years are confusing I am putting that down as what year of eligibility players would be in next year. For those that are not keeping track of the situation closely I am going to do my best to sum up. It is confusing. It almost isn't worth trying to figure out who might be back and on scholarship and whatever because there are so many potential variables. We do have a top 50 class coming in by some measures the last I looked. Take that FWIW. This is all contingent on Boals not being poached as well. I hope you find this helpful.

Ben Vander Plas 5 of 5 Could play another year. Already will have masters degree. Scholarship might not count per whatever NCAA decides and University is willing to pay.
Dwight Wilson III 5 of 5 Confirmed redshirt. Boals expecting return. Scholarship might not count but this would be his second extra season so there could even be a different rule for that
John Tenerowicz 5 of 5 I think he can return but would not count against the scholarship limit as a walk-on. Probably will Graduate and have no reason to pay is own way just to hardly ever play
Josh McDaniel 5? of 5? I have no idea if the has eligibility left but as a walk on it really doesn't matter much to the discussion.
Miles Brown 4 of 5
Ben Roderick 4 of 5
Michael Brown, Jr. 4 of 5 Would be a walk-on if he rejoins the team next year as is apparently expected
Lunden McDay 4 of 5 Hopefully everything will be straightened out in his personal life
Mark Sears 3 of 5 Nearly every program in the country would want him if he wants more exposure and potential NIL money
Sam Towns 3 of 5
Luke Frazier 2? of 5 Is a walk on this year but would get D1 scholarship offers if he enters the portal
Colin Granger 2? of 5 Seems to be redshirting. Playing time situation might not get better. Might transfer
Olumide Adelodun 1? of 4 Seems to be redshirting. Playing time situation might not get better. Might transfer
IJ Ezuma 2 of 4
AJ Clayton 2 of 4
AJ Brown 1 of 4 Committed recruit
Elmore James 1 of 4 Committed recruit
Aiden Hadaway 1 of 4 Committed recruit
Ajay Sheldon 1 of 4 Committed recruit
Ben Estis 1 of 4 Likely walk-on. Wouldn't count against limit. Son of Boals college teammate

Schmock should be gone. According to this, https://athletics.findlay.edu/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/sc... , he played four years at Findlay including last year, which doesn't count as a scholarship year. This is his fifth year. (See the career stats page.)

OK, thanks Pataskala, I fixed that. Here is a simplified version without comments as that is hard to read on a little screen.

5th year scholarship players (2)
Ben Vander Plas
Dwight Wilson III

Projected Scholarship players (13)
Miles Brown
Ben Roderick
Lunden McDay
Mark Sears
Sam Towns
Colin Granger
Olumide Adelodun
IJ Ezuma
AJ Clayton
AJ Brown
Elmore James
Aiden Hadaway
Ajay Sheldon

Possible walk-ons (5)
Josh McDaniel
John Tenerowicz
Michael Brown, Jr.
Luke Frazier
Ben Estis

I believe 13 is still the limit. If 5th years don't count we're OK. If they do at least two guys will need to go somewhere else. If it also takes a scholarship to keep Frazier it would need to be three and you still would not have spots available for any plums you might get that appear in the portal after the season.

I thought I read somewhere that this year you were allowed to have extra scholarship players due to the "Covid year" last year, but that this exemption goes away next year. I'll wait for BTC to tell me what the actual rule. Until he speaks, all else is simply unfounded rumor! ;-) We love you BTC!
