Are we playing UND? Am I in a time warp? I’m confused.

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about. Here’s a quick synopsis:

Austin Carr set an NCAA record that stood until a few years ago for most points by one player in a tournament game. It was suppose to be a close game. We had been nationally ranked as high as 5th that season, after beating four Big Ten teams, including Ohio State in the regular season. Then we got creamed like this in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Today’s game had the same feel to me. Worst first half performance since that game, as best as I can remember.

Did I miss someone beating Carr's individual record of 61 pts in 1 NCAA tournament game? Or is this more alternative facts?

I thought I remember hearing that someone beat that record a few years ago, but if I’m wrong, I appreciate the correction.

Well I checked with a few quick searches and as of 2020, the record still stood.

At any rate, my point was tonight’s game had the same feel to me. A well-regarded Ohio team gets the stuffing beat out of them in a complete mismatch that no one, even Jeff McKinney, saw coming.

OCF,
I see where you are coming from although it seemed tonight to be multiple people hitting shots. However a saving grace for us about the game tonight was (at this stage of the season) it wasn’t nearly as important in the grand scheme of things. That 1969-1970 team was probably my favorite of all time with the Trent, Boals, Ford, et al team a close second. I was a little too young, or at least unaware, of the mid-60s teams. A junior high BB team trip to Grover for a game against Toledo (67 or 68) is when it all started for me and the play in that game of Gerald McKee is something I especially remember, Given the 1969-1970 out of conference success we had against several respectable teams we had high hopes and Austin Carr shattered them. Certainly was a hollow feeling after that one. Guess we’ll never shake it. :)

Yes, that Notre Dame game was probably the worst defeat of my Bobcat fan career. It still hurts today to even think about it. I had visions of us repeating or even exceeding our 1963-64 team that went to the Elite 8. And, then it all came crumbling down so quickly in that horrendous slaughter of a defeat. That first half tonight somehow had that same feeling -- a real hyped Ohio squad that looked like a bunch of collective deer caught in the headlights. But, you are absolutely correct, there is one big difference. It's not the last game of the season, and we have a chance to right the ship. We didn't have that after the UND whipping. So, like you I remain hopeful. Go OHIO!

Your reference to Austin Carr sparks two fun memories. One was an Ohio versus Notre Dame game during the Don Hilt years. Carr put up big numbers but, if my memory isn't amiss, so did Hilt - more than 30.

The other memory comes after Carr's NBA career had ended. He and I - at age 40ish - were playing in a softball league. I was curious to see how he would hit. Well, Carr sent two balls into orbits that might still have them circling Mars.

Hilt's last season was 64-65. Carr's first season at Notre Dame was 68-69.

Yep, went to that NCAA game in Dayton. Austin Carr shot lights out that day. Still beating Purdue and Ohio State that year was incredible. My intro as a freshman to Bobcat basketball made me a fan forever !

I always tease my old friend Kenny Kowall about that game. It’s pretty remarkable that he put up 61 without a shot clock and a three point line.

Per chance, during Hilt's 3 seasons, did Ohio play Notre Dame in a regular season game? If not, my memory is clearly off track. I do seem to recall a game Ohio lost in which Hilt poured in more than 30 pts.

Yes, in 64-65. Ohio was coming off of an Elite Eight season and in the midst of another MAC championship run so it was another good team that you remember. Ohio was never ranked that year though. They went to Notre Dame, who was also unranked, late in the year and lost by 8 in a very high scoring game. That isn't too far off from what you were thinking.

A friend just reminded me that Miami had bounced Notre Dame from the tournament the previous year and that that provided Austin with some motivation to not be bounced by a MAC team two years in a row. I conceded that that could have been a factor. However, it was also true that just about every Bobcat played arguably his worst game of the year in that contest, so it was a perfect storm of bad play on the part of the Ohio and Austin Carr on a mission.

So, once again, in looking for scapegoats we can say the ultimate reason we lost to Notre Dame was the fault of Miami! ;-)

I meant in 64-65, I was in Kindergarten. In 1969-70, I was in fifth grade.

To be fair, Jeff's parents thought it was in his best interest to allow him to bulk up for PeeWee football.

There’s nothing better than seeing a pro athlete play a sport recreationally and realizing that whatever sport they picked they would’ve gone pro.
