The MAC really wasn't that deep in the Trent years ... much better in the Boals era but still not quite equal to the MAC 1998-2004 in my opinion.
While Ohio-Miami-Eastern and Ball State were already strong, that's when Western, Central, Kent, Akron, BG, Toledo and even Northern for a minute were also strong to varying degrees. That is what the MAC has to get back to.
I believe that Toledo team w/Stempin would give this UT team a run for its money. The 2000-2002 BG teams were not deep, but probably the best they've seen since. Go right on down the line, I would argue the best modern era (post 1980) teams at any of those schools probably played in that era (Ball State/Eastern/Miami aside).
That's what the MAC has to get back to. And don't forget, a very talented Marshall hoops program was in the MAC at that time, too. They never won the league, but who would argue the Slay-Van Hoose teams wouldn't be MAC favorites now.
