The coaches picked Ohio to finish first in the MAC and had 4 1st place votes. Bowling Green, who surprised everyone and won the MAC last year with a very, very young team. was picked to finish second with 3 1st place votes. Buffalo and CMU, who have probably been, along with Ohio, the dominant programs over the past 8 years or so, were picked 3rd and 6th. Kent and EMU were picked 4th and 5th.

https://getsomemaction.com/news/2021/11/3/womens-basketba...

The MAC women's side has been quite good for the past decade or so something only ranking behind the P6 and the American in the computers and was just behind the American a few times even though UConn was in it. I expected one of the better versions last year and that did not happen. So I don't know what to think of where the league is going into this season. Obviously, the coaches expect a tight race with most of the conference having a chance. Ohio needs to stay healthier than last season to win it.

Erica Johnson and Cece Hooks were, not surprisingly, on the first team. Hooks is a senior this year. However, It is interesting to think that 8 of the 10 player on the MAC first and second team are eligible to come back next year.

I first read this incorrectly, putting the comma in the wrong place, and reading:
"Erica and Cece were not, surprisingly, on the first team."
Fortunately I re-read it before I 'lost' it.

CeCe
All American Honorable Mention
MAC Player of the Year
MAC Defensive Player of the Year
One of leaders in nation in steals at 3.8/game

Erica
Has been first team and third team All-MAC
Only triple double in Ohio history

Have a great season OHIO!

The ladies open tonight at Notre Dame. It’s their home opener too plus we beat them at our place last year by a point so you know they’re looking for revenge. They are always a top team but
We are loaded and are picked first in the conference so it could be a wild game. Go Ohio!

A 36 point loss here to Notre Dame is pretty disappointing.

That is an understatement. Was really hoping for the triple play of ohio athletics but Holy Moly...never good to get blown out by a team you beat the year prior. Did anyone get to see any of this game? I figured to score 100+ and lose by almost 40 I would see dominance behind the arc but both teams were around 40%...free throws even too. ND was 32 for 46 from 2 while Ohio was 17 for 48. Eek. Sounds like they completely embarrassed us in the paint on both ends. That is certainly where we are most vulnerable.

ND the prior year was ravaged by Covid and injuries. Expecting anything based off of that game is not a good idea.

I watched part of it on my laptop while I watched the men's game on TV. It was a five-point game at halftime. Hooks had a great first half. As the game started to get away in the second half, I stopped watching. Looking at the stats, any game where Ohio has 19 turnovers to 12 for its opponent isn't going to go well. Notre Dame blocked 10 shots and had 13 offensive rebounds (to 19 defensive rebounds for Ohio).

I saw the end of the Liberty game after the men's game ended. We had the ball down 1 point with about :30 left and turned it over. After the teams traded free throws Liberty was throwing inbounding the ball with a 1 point lead. They tried to cut to the basket but hit the rim with the inbounds pass. It pounced back to the woman that inbounded after she established herself inbounds. Erica Johnson got called for a intentional foul at that point. Bolden claimed that inbounding the ball to yourself that way was a turnover. I honestly don't know myself.

It was a tough way to lose. Ohio was now taken two road losses to two good teams that they beat at home last season. Liberty was picked only second in the ASUN though. This was one I'm sure that they thought they could get.

I watched the end of that game, and it was quite strange with the inbounds pass that hit the rim. The announcers seemed to agree that that was a violation, but the officials chose not to review it because the flagrant foul against Johnson was apparently deemed to take priority. However, if the ball hitting the rim was a violation then the flagrant foul occurred during a dead ball, or almost simultaneously. Does the flagrant supersede the rim violation? Maybe one of our resident officials can unpack this for me? I just found it one of the strangest sequences of events on the court that I can remember.

It was no less bewildering sitting behind the bench. I have seen a lot of basketball but that was totally off the wall. Walking away trying to sort it with my son we were both mystified as to how the flagrant came out of the Dead Ball situation.

The entire might was a really bad night for officiating verifying my wife's months long assertions that the entire community of officials from baseball to basketball and everything in between has been woefully inconsistent and is much worse overall than a decade ago... Given that many of my friends are pretty good official it is a bit sad to me that the current state of sports is causing many to walk away. She was very excited my baseball's minor leagues using the technology to call balls and strikes with more accuracy than the Majors. Now with the box on the screen the guys behind the plate are being evaluated by the public as well as MLB.

It will be fun to run this scenario from last night by my friends first to figure out what the rule is on the ball off the rim....then to add in the intentional foul. Got to get some more details before I ask though as we did not have the benefit of the replay or the analysis in real time at the game. My initial reaction was only to the dead ball... as the players milled around and the refs talked it over....all of a sudden the announcer said "flagrant"....we looked at each other and said "wait....what!?"

Unfortunately we typically don't get to hear the officials explanation of these calls. But I keep seeing the same faces of refs who repeatedly make terrible game changing calls, so it doesn't seem like they are held accountable anyway.

Thanks, borna, let me know when you figure it out. As it stands, the whole last minute or so of that game is a real head-scratcher.

We signed one recruit. Jaya McClure, a 5'6'' point guard out of Louisville. Two time state champion and four year varsity starter. Nice looking player.

At some point though, I'd like to see us get one or two decent post players per signing class.

Field trip day at UC with an 11AM tip. If I didn't have to tend to a sick child, I'd probably go. Oh well, ESPN+ will do.

That was a neat one. UC jumps out to a nine point lead, but from then on it was the Johnson/Hooks show as most of the rest of the game felt like an extended Ohio run. UC played nine players 6'0" or taller and we played none. Yet we matched them on the boards and take home an 11 point win.

First ever extended minutes for Ella Pope I think and she looked like she belongs.

Is Kroll okay? She has yet to appear in a game. I didn’t notice her on the bench today but I did see Guice and Garnett who were not dressed

Good to get in the win column...would have been tough to accept 0-3 even if the schedule was tough.

The bad - Cece with 7 turnovers following 6 against Liberty. She just keeps getting more and more confident relentlessly driving to the hoop but it's left her with some desperate situation that lead to turnovers.

The good - I agree on Pope, but much of the PT was related to Mace's foul trouble. I'd like to see more of Pope and get away from the 4 guard approach.

The expected easy win over Mercyhurst today. It was 90-46. I saw none of it. A lot of minutes for all of the 2nd string. Bambule did not play. I suspect she must have a nagging injury.

Bambule had a walking cast on, so she was definitely injured.

Needed a quarter to figure out their zone, but then the floodgates opened. I haven't seen the stats yet, but I'd venture to guess more than 15 offensive boards and maybe even 20.

I thought I saw Kroll behind the bench. Don't know what her deal is. Garnett I guess is injured, so I think that creates am opportunity for Kate Dennis. Neither of the Hale sisters played.

Interesting that FAMU has a couple Columbus players and had some family representing. Apparently their coach went to Taylor High School near Cincinnati. Little Ohio River community on the west side. About the last place I'd think to find a 6'3" Pat Summit recruit. Too bad the team looked pretty undisciplined.

Wild win today against a decent Richmond team, 98-89. Erica goes off for 32 points; Cece with 24 points, missing a triple double by 2 assists; Burris with 20 points; Mace with 10, and true frosh Yaya Felder with a 9-9 game. Next up: at Minnesots. Go OHIO!

That was a truly great game. 15 for Richmond was unstoppable, and she doesn't look like one of their main options based on their season stats. I like scoring 20+ in the last three and a half minutes.

Also, noticed that Garnett and Kroll are on crutches. Garnett was moving around very gingerly even with crutches. One of the Hales was in a boot. Guice obviously not recovered from the ACL yet. The other Hale not dressed. This program is always super hurt.

I expect Guice to redshirt since she hasn't had a redshirt year yet. She and Mace, and Pope can come back next year as 4th year sophomores. I am sure Guice and Kroll would be getting a lot of playing time and possibly starting if they were healthy.

Our backcourt next year will be Jaya and Yaya. The band could come up with some fun routines off of that. How about a takeoff on Lee Dorsey's "sitting in lala waiting for my yaya".
