Back to BRick, and I'll preface what I say with the obvious: I'm not a basketball or a shooting coach. I'm just a former spot-up intramural shooter who won a couple of 3-point shooting contests earlier in life, which qualifies me about as much as staying at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I see a lot of wasted movement in his shot sequence. Watching him shoot, every time he drops the ball at or below his waist, then brings it back up into position to shoot. The ball "travels" a lot of distance between him catching the ball and releasing the ball. Watching other quality shooters over the years, like Kellogg and Dartis and Freeman, I never saw that motion of dropping the ball low and then bringing it back up. Dartis also had one of the quickest triggers I think I've ever seen. Maybe it's just the sour taste of how this season has gone for him, and I didn't see the kid play in high school, but it feels like we wanted him to be the next Dartis/Kellogg/etc... and it's just not who or what he is.

Does it really matter who starts? It is obvious to anyone who pays attention he lost his job to Tommy. Come crunch time, it has been Tommy on the court. Here are the most recent minutes played:

Akron - Schmock 30, Roderick 12
CMU - Schmock 25, Roderick 25
Kent - Schmock 27, Rodeick 22
Miami - Schmock 27, Roderick 17
EMU - Schmock 27, Roderick 26
CMU - Schmock 29, Roderick 29

Tommy has taken some of Miles minutes too, but Roderick has suffered the majority of the blow. It is mental at this point and sad to see.

It truly is. I can't remember another guy in a Bobcat uniform in the last 20 years losing his shot like this from one year to the next. Ivo comes to mind, but that was more about his inability to get to the foul line.

In my opinion, Ivo was a CHOICE and strategy to not get to the foul line. I still maintain he got the FT yips after airballing a free throw. After that game was when he started his amazing streak of not shooting a free throw. He completely changed his game to all fadeaways and no driving to the hoop at all. He still really wasn't that bad, just completely different.

I'm really hoping B-Rod can get it together for next year. Absolutely heartbreaking this year with the exclusion of the Eastern Mich game where he went off.

I assume he's still making them in practice, as his teammates seem willing to get the ball to him when he's open and the coaches have continued to give him a green light from outside. A friend who was watching his warms up at the Akron game said he made a number in a row. I'm not sure if he was talking about the warmups before the game or at halftime. All this really does suggest that the problem is mainly mental.

I've also noticed that most of his misses are real close to going in. In fact, many times they are in the net and pop out. This suggested to me that he's putting some kind of reverse spin on the the ball, obviously inadvertently. Perhaps, some one with coaching experience can explain this kind of situation. What's wrong with his mechanics during the game when he shoots from outside?

OK win or lose Roderick with a couple huge shots late. Credit where credit is due. His ability to consistently knock it down from 3 is such a key difference for this team.

If there’s one positive to come from this debacle it might be that Roderick has seen some shots go through the twine.

Poor wording on my part. I meant "IF" he can do it consistently it's huge for this team. He has obviously not done so this year.

Shooters can get hot. If his confidence comes back, better late than never. Having a consistent threat from him and a 3rd scorer alongside BVP and Sears, it could make a huge difference for this team. I'll be honest, I don't think it's going to be more than a random hot game because we've seen a season-long trend with him. But if he is going to "find it," there's no better time than tournament time.

+1 Yep, couldn't agree more. Let's hope that this loss is the start of BRod 2.0. I was hoping the they'd get the ball to him for the final potential tying shot. Make that and his confidence would be sky high.

Bingo except its unfair to call him a point guard. He is in name and size only. He's our leading scorer and scoring guard. He's not a point guard yet. Would be huge for us if he could make that transition.

I agree. If he's not our point guard than who is? When he's out and TS is in, it would appear to me that TS functions as PG also. The fact that Sears doesn't distribute as efficiently as Preston, doesn't mean he's not a PG, IMHO.

That's like saying he's a QB but just doesn't pass or read defenses well.

If you aren't a distributor who helps get the team into sets, finds the open man in their spots and is the floor leader - then you're not a PG IMO. You're just the shortest guy on the floor.

He's a scoring guard who happens to have the ball in his hands a lot.

31 games and he has been an utter disaster. Sorry, but no other way to say it. His offensive efficiency for a guy averaging 24 minutes a game has to be near the bottom 5 of all players in NCAA basketball this year. I’ve watched a ton of college hoops through the years and I’ve never seen a player completely lose his shot from one year to the next like Roderick. I honestly don’t know how Boals continues to run him out there. I feel sorry for him.

I’d love to see Sam start at the 4. He’s fast, athletic and long. I’m sure he couldn’t be any worse on offense
