I’m all for players cashing in, but this seems over the top.

The NFL has partnered with four betting services, Caesar's is connected with the Fiesta Bowl, and LSU has partnered with Caesar's Sportsbook, so why not? Those connections should raise more questions than Timme's deal. They opened the door for him (and others); he just walked through. Northern Quest apparently doesn't have a sportsbook yet, and can't take bets on in-state teams when it does in the next month or so. It's also unclear whether the deal calls for him to promote the gambling operation or is limited to other Northern Quest activities (hotel, restaurants, shows, etc.). Plus, he's over 21, so he's old enough to promote the gambling operation (although the school, being Jesuit, might also have some restrictions as to what he can do).

Whose sense of morality do we use to define which endorsements are okay and which aren't?

It's downright silly to be clutching pearls because an NCAA basketball player signed a legal, above-board endorsement deal with a casino during a month in which literally billions of dollars will change hands through various forms of college basketball betting, both regulated and non.

Very funny to me that a completely legal endorsement deal between a player and a Casino is an indicator of foreboding "unintended consequences" of the new system. Meanwhile, the old system led to multiple point shaving scandals and well-documented instances of organized crime working with players to impact black-market gambling outcomes.

You have to have a pretty warped view to see a legal, above board, out-in-the-open endorsement deal as a problem, but a system that led to point shaving and illegal activity as worth fighting to save. We have decades of unintended consequences to look back at with the old system.

As I’ve said many times, I think it’s time the players made some money for a variety of reasons. Gambling used to be taboo. Now for monetary reasons, it isn’t. Que Sera Sera, and the clowns may very well be sent in.

From what I’ve been reading, Apple or Amazon of Google will buy the NFL rights soon and move the games to a pay per view format. Everyone will have two apps going on game days, the game and some gambling app. Heightened interest when you have money riding. The other sports will follow.

Agreed! Funny, some want the kids to make that money, but then when it goes against their sensibilities, it's no longer ok.

Sports gambling is big business right now. I don't participate in it, but I don't personally condemn those that do. Do what you want with your money, it's your money. One story about a sports gambling business I saw somewhat recently was Pat McAfee's announcement about his partnership with Fan Duel. If you haven't seen this video, it's worth a watch.

Regardless of what you think about gambling or McAfee, he's using a lot of that cash to do a lot of good and help people in the area where he grew up.

As time goes on there will be no vices. Gambling and marijuana, gone off the list. What’s next? Maybe we’ll start seeing ads on TV for escorts.

Nothing legally prevents it. For decades there have been TV spots for "chat" lines, which mostly are essentially phone sex.
