BRod was not committed. McDay was, but when Boals let the son of his High School coach go (did not retain him on the staff), he had to re-recruit him.
So you are saying Cameron Joyce was the link to McDay? Appears that he landed on his feet up at St Ignatius coaching HS. For the recruiting guys who follow that stuff, do either Roderick or McDay show offers or interest from Boals or Ohio State?
Yes, Joyce was the original link to McDay. Much uncertainty when Cameron was not retained, and Boals had to sell himself and make sure the commitment was solid. In today's world of recruiting and coaches leaving, this should not be hard to understand (and was even on this board). Neither had offers or serious interest from OSU.

From what I recall (could be incorrect) Ben, being from Olentangy, WANTED to go to OSU and was holding out hope for offers but they never came. When Boals was hired he recruited and won him over on Athens.

I'm not going to play revisionist history with 20/20 hindsight after a season that BRod has really struggled. At the time Boals came in late and had a very shortened recruiting window. Roderick was one of the best available at a position of need (replacing Dartis). I was ecstatic when we signed him.

Just on him and the coaches to get him out of this season long funk and actually turn expectations into reality. Might happen, might not. This season could turn around in Cleveland or end with a thud.

Regardless I have really high hopes for next year, getting DW3 back and the incoming recruiting class. If BVP stays (no clue) we could be scary good - including BRod.

No, not the most embarrassing loss in school history. We have many similar losses like this in our history. On the road at BG has provided a mountain of disappointment.

I've been one of Carter's biggest fans over the years but I have never liked his constant relentless whining and body language issues with the refs. It's a bad look and last night's hissy fit was the culmination. I do NOT support it.

Not sure who your source is, OCF. While it's true that BRod was waiting on an offer from o$u. . . or perhaps X, UD, Cincy, Iowa, etc. . . it's not true that o$u had him on a list for a possible offer.
I support this version of events vs. OCF's source.
I'm sure your sources are better than mine. I was just repeating a somewhat widely circulated rumor I heard on the street at the time. I was not claiming any inside sources. I don't travel in the rarefied atmosphere that you guys do.

Not the most embarrassing loss, but I would argue one of the worst with how it unfolded. BG awful...losing three players...losing 8 of 9 and just flat out not a decent basketball team. Throw in the comeback and Carter's hissy fit and this is one that leaves a sour taste. Will be interesting to see how Carter responds moving forward. I just can't believe any Ohio fan would think what they saw out of Carter last night was acceptable. I can understand maybe completely losing it like that down 20 with 3 to go....but man...not down 3 with 3 to go.

Back in '88 - '89 we had season full of "most embarrassing losses ever".

Sure Carter lost his cool but anyone who wants to pin the loss on him must not have watched the same game I did.
Huh? Can pin a lot of it on him.

3 of 9 from the field.

6 points.

Two technicals with under 4 minutes to go with your team down 3 after going on a 12-0 run and has all of the momentum.

The technicals led to a five point possession for BG and the Falcons win by 3. You must not have watched the same game that I did.

3:41 Technical Foul on Jason Carter. 62 - 65
3:41 Daeqwon Plowden made Free Throw. 62 - 66
3:41 Daeqwon Plowden made Free Throw. 62 - 67
3:41 Technical Foul on Jason Carter. 62 - 67
3:41 Daeqwon Plowden missed Free Throw. 62 - 67
3:41 Bowling Green Deadball Team Rebound. 62 - 67
3:41 Daeqwon Plowden made Free Throw. 62 - 68
3:14 Matiss Kulackovskis made Layup. Assisted by Daeqwon Plowden. 62 - 70
You are one of the most emotional and critical posters here. FACT: Boals said post game we didn't deserve to win. So you put the L on Carter, who averages almost 14 ppg. So he had a less than stellar game. Go watch the entire 40 minutes. You start a thread here regarding "one of most embarrassing losses in school history" which is funny, if not so pathetic. You criticize Sears constantly now. Who led us in rebounding last night, in assist and 20+ points.

I don't accept him acknowledging the crowd as he was being escorted off the floor, however, I can understand the frustration within the context of the entire situation.

The refs were horrid.

The team has been spiraling out of control.

Boals continues to hound the refs, he probably could have gotten a T in most games this year, luckily he hasn't.

All of this considered, I'm surprised its taken this long for somebody to get ejected. Jason had a lapse in judgement during the heat of battle. That's competition. I can't question that he cares. I can question some others on the team...

I saw him get the 2 T's but not what he did afterwards. Any insight, FearLeon?
Waved bye bye to the crowd and put his hand to the ear. Zero maturity.
I endorse his behavior. Good for him. I would have done the same thing.
Jeff...you can't be serious? Which part do you endorse. The two technical fouls with 3:50 left that cost his team momentum and any chance to finish the comeback off with a win?

Or his pro wrestling antics with the crowd leaving the court?

If that were my kid, I would have been embarrassed. As a die-hard Ohio hoops fan, I was embarrassed. To not think of your teammates in the heat of battle and control your emotions is baffling to me for someone who is 25 years old. To battle back with a 12-0 run and piss it all away because of a selfish move is inexcusable.
The situation was not handled optimally. But I disagree with drawing conclusions and disagree with strongly criticizing Carter on this. I agree with Russ....I'm going to hold back on the criticism since I have not been in the same situation Carter was in. As for his gestures as he walked off the court...it was a crazy, emotionally charged environment in the Stroh at that time. I was sitting three rows behind the Ohio bench. Bowling Green fans next section to us were yelling insults at the family members of players and the rest of us. People were yelling at Carter as he walked off. Can't blame him too much for his gestures. At the time I was actually hoping he'd be even more demonstrative. Best course of action would have been to just look straight ahead and walk off, but I can understand why he did what he did. I was tempted to pull a Grandma Hipsher myself but held off.

I trust the coaching staff to evaluate this situation.

The terrible losses in a row to end the season and a month of poor starts. This teams won 23 games but a very soft schedule. The lack of depth and covid makeup schedule caught up with this team.

I still can’t figure out how this team morphed into a below average team in D1 to close out the regular season.

Obviously signs were there. Concordia. St Francis. Stetson. Terrible starts against Toledo. Still you had dominating win vs Buffalo. 60 point 2nd half’s. Baffling. Usually when teams go bad there’s obvious signs. Lame duck coach. Exodus of players. No senior leadership. No team chemistry. None of that applies here. At least on the surface. It really comes down to players absolutely all crapping the bed at the same time. No Tommy three magic to save them. No shocking Miles Brown double double to save them. No BVP career high or triple double to save them. No Sears 30+ points to save them. Hell not even a clutch Olumide steal and 3 to save them. All season long those things happened. On this losing streak none of that has.

Just like the previous coaching regime, Boals and his staff are not exempt from criticism. Boals I think is just as baffled with inconsistent and bizarre rotations. And the fact that nobody on staff could fix Roderick this year and make him at least a serviceable MAC player has been so disappointing. How many times can you watch the ball clank off the rim in one season? And I don’t want to hear anymore that this team is tired or we don’t have Wilson or McDay. Bottom line there is no excuse for this team to lose to two of the worst college basketball teams in America in Bowling Green and Northern Illinois back-to-back.

This has been one of the most mind-blowing 9 game stretches in Ohio Basketball history.

+1 Except for a slightly different take on Roderick, I think you've summarized the situation quite well. This is totally baffling to me. I've been watching OHIO basketball longer than most folks on this board have been alive, and I can never remember a season like this. I've suffered through some amazingly bad basketball -- Bandy Ball, Hahn Era, Hunter's Wilderness Campaign, etc. -- but I don't ever remember a team that started out like gangbusters and then ended the season looking totally dysfunctional. Yes, there was the total disaster of the Notre Dame game in 1970 after being ranked as high as 5th nationally, but that was just one game. This is like each player regressed at the same time into a caricature of his former self. I'm completely baffled. Better basketball minds than I will have to try to explain this.
