Groce would be gone if offered. He is from the Indy area.

And the hits keep coming . . . with Boals leaving, followed by OUr highly-anticipated 4-man recruiting class.

Like I asked in another thread following Sears entering the portal, can someone convince me why I should continue to get emotionally invested in Ohio football/basketball in the landscape of 2022 collegiate sports?
Remember a year ago, when we thought we'd have the whole team back from a second-round NCAA Tournament squad?

Since then:

* Preston goes pro
* Wilson blows out his knee
* McDay quits the team
* Despite a school-best 19-3 start, season flames out
* BVP transfers
* Sears transfers

Likely soon:

* Boals leaves
* Recruits decommit
* Returning players bolt for the portal

It's like a daily kick in the groin for Bobcat fans.

(And that's without even talking about the demise of the football program over that span.)
As long as we keep Lamar Thornton I really don't believe the recruits will de-commit.

Let's be positive here! BVP and Sears haven't fully left yet - still don't know if they've even accepted offers yet. I don't count on Butler potentially netting Boals - Groce or Matta has a higher chance in my mind. Even if he does get the Butler job, we still have a VERY good assistant in Lamar Thornton which I believe could keep the recruits and encourage the returning lineup to stay (Ezuma especially being from Hargrave). Plus we still could be looking at some impact portal adds. We offered an extremely good PG in Joe Toussaint out of Iowa. Skogman is also in the portal who could help us a lot.

On March 10th we beat Ball State and the optimists among us (myself included) thought we might just win the MAC tournament and make it back to the Big Dance. By Sunday we will know if Coach Boals is headed to Butler (via the buyout going down after Saturday.)

If that's the case, then in the span of 20+ days we will have had three players enter the transfer portal and our coach head for greener pastures (literally.)
Welcome to life in a small town Mid Major with a proud tradition, but no big time car dealers or any captains of industry to offer nice cars and tidy financial sums to players.

The next thing you know an old friend and teammate of Coach Boals will make an unplanned trip to Athens via John Glenn Airport. Stony Brook x2?

My gawd, some heads would explode if we hired Geno.

If true, that that should set the record for fastest "national search" for a new coach.

Groce would take the Bishop Sycamore job if the check cleared. Super D-bag.

I sure hope he stays. I'd love to see the incoming recruiting class for at least a year but hey, times have changed in college basketball.

Does not have much to do with Indy roots.

More to do with the Butler ties going back to 06 and Lickliter....plus the Akron situation being what it is.... Butler is a good gig. Program and Culture are bigger than Coaches/Players. THere are very few programs where the Program is bigger than the individuals.

A lot of posters seem to want Nored or Boals looking through the thread. Very fair arguments for both candidates.

Been over 100 years since Butler was coached by an outsider. So it goes back farther than Licklighter

The intent was not about Butler but more about tying Coach to Indy. IMHO I beleive JG would go wherever the right fit was. I do not think his Indy Roots or desire to get back home have as much to do with things. IN, CA, NC would all be fine if the situation came to leave Akron for a greener pasture

Fun Fact......"The Butler Way" phrase started with Matta in his one and only year as Head Coach of Butler. THe phrase and culture endures

I get all that. Was just adding it’s been 100 years since a non Butler person has coached that program. Pretty impressive

From the Butler message board LOL

"Over on the Ohio board, many don’t seem distressed that Boals might be leaving. They appreciate the time he put in but as one poster put it, “If Boals wants to chase the money, fine. We'll find some up and comer who will do just fine.”

Or this one, “I am also not so sure his accomplishments here, while we are all very happy with the initial results, really make him a target to others yet. I think some will see what could be, or potential, but will that be enough ...?”

Rave reviews let me tell you…. FROM THEIR OWN FANS!!’"

and this...

"You know who’s also not in demand by any other school? Our apparent front runner Jeff Boals. This is truly being run like a Mickey Mouse operation."

Too funny

Ohio is founding member of the Mac.There is no other conference. Our alumni are in Ohio. We are going to be in same conference as Kent State and Miami. We are a small town public university. Bowling Greeb, Central, Western, Eastern, Ball State and Niu pretty much joined together.
