Not saying it couldn't happen but to say we win one we're going to win the next? Against Kansas? Who was not missing starting pg like unc? Bit of a reach.

I vividly remember standing on the Convo floor in 1994 listing to then Coach Hunter talking about his goal every year, before he left Athens, was to hang a national championship banner from the rafters.

Some may call that thinking crazy or unrealistic and certainly the data backs that up. But. If you don't aim for it, or make that a goal, or believe yourself it's achievable then it will never happen for certain.

Every inevitability starts with the seed of an idea or desire that becomes a goal and a belief.

Yeahhhh they were virtually the same roster who eviscerated us by 50 the year prior. And they got better. We weren't winning that one.

The recent Sears news sort of suggests that it will be harder going forward. You better get it done out of the blue because if you have a good season the heat will be on your good players to transfer.

So you think in today's world of not being able to keep talent, that Ohio can make a Final Four?

Between the 2005 and 2006 season, I remember watching there was an interview that may have been on WOUB or ONN with Leon Williams and Jeremy Fears. I distinctly remember Leon talking about what it would take to get this program to compete for a national championship.

In Ray Mernaugh's book that chronicled the 2006 MAC season, Ray was in the Kent locker room for a Jim Christian pregame and he quoted Jim as saying something to the tune of "What championship do you want? It can be the MAC championship, it can be the national championship."

Yes. You still have to shoot for it. Otherwise you might as well drop down to D2 and be in the same position as football.

In today's climate that means having a tremendous coaching staff that hits on 5-7 new incoming freshmen and transfers every year and hoping that you're able to pay them enough to come to Athens for one shining moment.

The likelihood just dropped another few decibels from an already low percentage. But that's what it is.

Non-zero probability.

This is a bit of a stray thought, and admittedly an out of the box idea, but all of the comparisons to the minor leagues make be wonder. Is there a future where mid-majors and major programs develop loose affiliations for this purpose?

You could imagine coaching trees playing out this way. Think about the Thad Marta coaching tree which extends to Ohio State, Xavier, Butler, Dayton, etc.

Say Chris Holtman's recruiting a kid but thinks he's a little raw, or has a bunch of upperclassmen and there isn't gonna be much playing time. In theory he could send him to Akron and Groce where he'd play in a similar system, see more minutes, and if a spot opens head back to Ohio State. Not ideal from a mid major's perspective, but it might result in more talented players coming if they felt they had a path to the right major program. Almost like the loan system in European soccer.

Agree . . . that missed free throw still haunts, but if it goes in and we beat UNC, I can see us winning the next one. Go OHIO!
Nah, IMO it's not the missed free throw that should haunt but Coop making a steal up four points very late and forgetting he's playing against top talent and goes for a layup which was easily blocked from behind. He dribbles past the basket and into the corner and then out front killing the clock and then gets fouled that would have put the game away.

Gonzaga is piking up 1 seeds in the WCC. Butler was best when dominating the Horizon League.

If you have the best program in a given conference that helps tremendously. Ohio builds that perception in the MAC it could be in the dance frequently, possibly make a title run.
