WMU might have the best recruit in the MAC coming in, maybe better than our AJ Brown and/or Elmore James. Some consider him the best recruit out of Michigan. Last name of Hannah, I believe.

how about that? Bates goes first. See if the other half of that comment happens.

I always liked COach Bates.

Coach Bates is a good coach and a good person. I'm sorry that things didn't work out there.

Hawkins left him as bare a cupboard as you can leave a coach. Hawkins is a legend but dude did not help Bates out at all.

He also got a contract that was short and well below league average... and had to guide the team through the mess of COVID from the start. He definitely was not set up for long-term success.

If you want to fire Hawkins, fine. The program was average and only occasionally good. But they delayed the rebuild by promoting an assistant and paying a bottom dollar salary. Wonder how Bates feels. Raw that he wasn't set up for success, or thankful for the head coaching experience.

EDIT: I guess hiring Bates was sort of the best they could do given the circumstances at the time. They fired Hawkins days before the Covid shutdown and then the university went on a hiring freeze. Sucks huh?

That's one take.

COach has been there and stepped away before. HE was always good to our Indiana kids so I liked that he got the job and hired asst with Hooiser connections. I am not so sure they didi it on the cheap as you implied or whether they just knew what they had in COach Bates. TIme will tell and it will interesting to watch what is next for the Florida Alum. THere is always a backstory. I tend to watch and wait before pronouncing judgement. More than meets the eye here.

That was the way I remember it going down sadly. They couldn't get anyone on campus and had poor timing for firing/hiring a coach in the MAC. At the end of the day, what WMU will do next is telling of the trajectory of that dept. Especially given how cheap they have looked to people internally and externally.

Coach Bates didn't step down. He was told he could resign or be fired. Hopefully he'll land somewhere better. Too bad, he changed A LOT in the program in a short time frame.

Looks like Tom Crean will be available after UGA's season is over. A man maybe still with Midwest ties and might be available cheap since he'll get a $3.2 mil buyout. After failing in the SEC and MAC rebuild might be what he wants.

Another excellent hire for a MAC school. With the new coaches at BSU, Miami and now WMU, it looks to me like the conference is really stepping up its game in terms of high quality coaches. And don't forget Stan Heath at EMU, who was in his first year this past season.
