This is one of my favorite threads to keep going, but does anyone do like me and after a loss you don't even feel like watching the sport at all until we play again? I had Rider/Rutgers on as background noise yesterday. That was it since Arky State.

What are you seeing.

Western Michigan just lost at home to Northwood (D2)

By the way, is the idea of a student section back? Two games for us there is clearly a presence of students excited to be there. And not just 10 front and center guys. And to my eyes and ears, not Norm-led. Whole sections on November weeknights. And football too has been great. But then elsewhere in smaller places. I watched the end of Omaha-Abilene Christian last night because it was close and while it wasn't a big overall crowd, there was an antagonizing group of ACU guys behind the basket. I just caught a highlight video of IU-Indy vs LIU and there was a decent group of IU-Indy students standing and into it.

Someone not long ago, maybe Ruck, made the point that people might start cravin live sports more in an age of low effort AI "content". Maybe there's something to that.

Yes that was me, although I think I made that point as more of a financial value sense (specifically live broadcast ratings) than attendance. But I'd make the same argument for live attendance as well, not just due to AI generated garbage but how we have really lost any sense of a monoculture in the last decade. Think back a decade or 2 and there was always a show or something virtually every one shared in that brought us all together. We don't have that as much as we used to, and shared experiences are something humans crave - Enter live sports with fellow classmates.

Anyway, Monday student crowd was really good. Thursday not as much of a turnout but still solid. And the football crowd was excellent, including many all the way to the final whistle. You can tell several pockets want to be a bit crazier and loud but are reluctant. Hopefully they come out of their shell.

I may catch shit for this, but it's time for Norm to come sit with the rest of us old farts. I love his passion and efforts, but it's just weird and confusing. Imagine if OSU football had some random old guy that coordinated most the cheers and urged them to get excited. We would relentlessly make fun of them. He no doubt generates some activity, but an argument can be made that he is negatively affecting just as much. He can come sit with me and I will join him in trying to get the elder fans hyped while the students figure it out on their own.

Ohio freshmen have, in 2 months, been part of one of the best campus atmospheres on a football Saturday (WVU) and arguably one of the most exciting games v. Miami, our main rival. Both in front of large crowds (record attendance v. WVU).

My son, one of those freshmen, knows these turnouts are not the norm, having been to 1 or 2 games per season his whole life. But how many of those freshmen's first-ever experience at Peden was the WVU game? Sending home large crowds with exciting wins against neighbor and P4 WVU and OUr top rival can only keep the students engaged and wanting to come back for more.

And I think I heard that the Arkansas St. attendance was the best season opener in basketball in years (decades?). The student section, not organized like the Crazy Cats or the O-Zone, has been impressive and is still the best in the MAC.

Finally, I think students see Norm more as a novelty, something they put up with but not necessary to their mission.

Two interesting scores in the MAC last night.

Buffalo over Doug Gotlieb's Green Bay Phoenix 83-76. Derrick Talton Jr with 21 off the bench for the Buffs.

Kent over Cornell 110-102 in a barn burner. 78 combined 3PT shots. Morgan Safford had 34 pts, 9-15 from 3PT.

Xavier took an ass-whipping at home to Santa Clara. I know Xavier isn't expected to be good this year, but I've rarely seen them lose badly at home to Big East teams, much less a west coast mid major. Of note, Santa Clara has a player who spent the last two seasons in the G-league, but by stats is not one of their star players.

Santa Clara of course coached by Herb Sendek who's still in the game and probably still has several years left.

Kent beat UNC-Wilmington in a game the ESPN announcer repeatedly labeled a matchup of top 25 mid-major teams.

DePaul is at least better than what they were. I watched the last 7 minutes. The transfer guard from Wisconsin is a problem. A very good win for Buffalo.

Will this be the tallest player ever seen in the Convo? https://x.com/ThePortalReport/status/1993000943068250530

We're seeing a lot of competent seven footers in the early season. Be nice to have one sometime.

This guy's resume looks like a traveling salesman.

Maybe he could get NIL money doing an updated version of this old ad classic:

MAC 3-0 yesterday and 4-0 so far today. . . until this disaster down in Florida with OUr Bobcats. Big game coming up at 8 with Akron v. a very good Yale team, coached by former Ohio asst coach James Jones and EMU with a tough matchup with Louisville.

And we lost to BC…at HOME.

Not a good look for Jeff.

Just saw the score of my old next door neighbor’s game against Akron. Yale shoots 63% for the game and Akron shoots 62%. The difference in the game. Yale makes 21 of 21 free throws and improves to 6 and 1.

Shabamon, must be tough being a Cincinnati sports fan at the moment.

Not only did EMU come into the Queen City tonight and spanked the Bearcats, but this is after a weekend that saw UC lose a basketball game v. Louisville and a football game on national TV to BYU, FC Cincinnati is knocked out of the MSL playoffs in the Eastern Conference semifinals to Inter Miami and Messi, and the Bengals get beat by Baltimore, giving them their second 4-game losing streak this season. And all of these games were at home!

Luckily, I'm not a fan of any of these teams. . . although I am a fan of the Reds since the Big Red Machine days.

I took my son to the Bengals/Jets game. His first regular season NFL game. Surely they can beat the winless dippy doppy Jets. No matter what else happens this season, my son can start off 1-0. Right? Right???

Making this look even worse for Boals and Ohio basketball is that Stony Brook, before beating LMU, defeated Bethune Cookman, which was coming off a recent win in the Convo.

So to sum up, Boals has our program at a stage where it's losing to 2 teams that in turn lose to his former team, Stony Brook. The Bobcats can make some amends Wednesday night in the Convo when they host the Maine Black Bears, who lost earlier this season to Stony Brook.
