Toledo gets a gift with a home game against Dayton and they get demolished. Let's face it...the power rankings don't lie. The MAC was/is abysmal this year. The only thing that can save the conference season is an Akron win over UCLA.

1st time I’ve seen UD this year … super fun to watch , whacked Toledo on their home court . ( UD without their super point guard ! )

And still got drilled without Dayton's best player in the lineup. The MAC is truly in bad shape right now.

I'm slowly starting to realize a reddit comment of us being a "meme" conference is starting to become true. Trying to stay optimistic, but that's pretty damning.

Shumate was 0-11 from the floor for the game, 0 points. Rollins shot just 6 of 21 from the floor. The top tier of the MAC has really crumbled towards the end of the season. Ohio's demise started earlier than the rest, but Toledo nearly lost on Thursday in Cleveland in the 1-8 matchup before Akron bounced them. Kent was rolling before imploding against Akron and losing to Southern Utah. Buffalo was a real head scratcher all year. Akron, before their streak started and they took advantage of everyone else nose-diving was not a great team. I don't have high hopes for them against UCLA tonight.

So yea, the MAC reputation is not being helped by the last 3 weeks of basketball.

The worrying thing is that it may well get worse next season as talent like Sparks transfers out. It will be a mighty struggle for all mid-majors to hold onto talent in this new environment.

Is this maybe a matter of motivation? Sometimes teams that go to these "loser tournaments" after having their sights set on the "Big Dance" kind of lose focus and motivation. This kind of drop off in performance of these guys would seem to me to be likely more due to motivation than the competition.

Like the infamous post-Sweet 16 NIT for Ohio when I believe Walt Offut didn't even attempt a shot from the floor?

The MAC did win their last NCAA tourney 1st round game, which was against the defending champions. Just saying. While I can.

Does this talent flow hurt the weaker mid majors relative to the stronger ones who can at least argue for a winning culture?

It appears to me that most of the programs in the MAC have been pushed down the D1 pecking order because they don't have as much to offer.

I guess time will tell. I have an admitted heavy bias, but it would seem Ohio has a significant advantage over other programs in terms of fan engagement coupled with a track record of success. Toledo has the engagement but not the track record. Akron, Kent State and Buffalo have the track record but not the engagement. No one else in the MAC is even worth mentioning in either sphere.

I know other factors come into play like playing time, fit, coaches, overall facilities and (sometimes) academic fit. But at least within the conference, one would expect to win the transfer war.

I think from the 70s through the early 2000s I'd say most looked at Ohio, Miami, and Ball State as the flagship programs. Miami and Ball St. have sort of checked out most recent years.

Dayton season is over.

Lost a barnburner at Vandy.

Vandy next game should be at Xavier. Winner goes to NYC to Madison Sq. Gardens
