New walk on??? Can't really find any information on him other than this. Don't see that we offered him scholarship previously.

A 6'3'' shooting guard from Upper Arlington who averaged 18 ppg this past year and scored more than 1,000 points in his career.

Dude looked pretty sharp in this game but of course, he was bested by our future starting point guard from Coffman :)

Averaged over 18 per game as a senior, scored over 1000 in career. 3rd team all state, conference co player of the year along with Ajay Sheldon.

As I understand it, was not on Bobcat radar screen til about 6 weeks ago when someone close to the UA program alerted Boals and Co. about him (parents are both Ohio grads). Ohio contacted UA staff, got some tape on him, had him in for a visit and extended offer this week.

Very pleased to see Ohio staff following up on something like this. I know last decade, a previous staff did not follow up when UA folks tried to get them interested in players. UA has several now playing at D-1 level.

I like this kid's game but if he were to get the last scholly over Estis I would be quite angry!

Dane Goodwin committed to o$u during his freshman year. Backed out when Matta retired and just announced he's returning to ND next season for his fifth year in South Bend. Who are the other UA grads playing DI?

Guessing you won't be the only BAer upset with this scenario. I'm thinking I heard somewhere that Cellis033 is the founder and president of the Estis fan club.

Max Martz at UPenn is from UA. I think Saul's staff did extend an offer but how hard were they actually pursuing?

Do you mean extended a scholarship offer or preferred walk-on? Noticed on the recruit page it says preferred walk-on. Really hoping it’s the latter and the last remaining scholarship is used in portal.

You are correct! I just like the idea of a potential Estis 2.0. But, if Quinn became more deserving of a scholly over Ben I won't be too disappointed. Also, now accepting applications to the Ben Estis fan club!

It is indeed preferred walk on.

Shabamon is of course correct. I seem to remember one other kid who's playing somewhere but for the life of me can't come up with a name. I thought he might be at Wofford, but that's Keaton Turner of Coffman.

Over the last decade, Kevin Vannatta, who almost single handedly took UA to the state tourney a while back, started 116 games for UNC Asheville. Brian Sullivan started over 100 games for Miami and Davidson. Danny Hummer played sparingly at both Air Force and Ohio State.

I think he's taking Luke's slot in the roster. He'll get a lot of PT in practice and intrasquad games.

Can someone explain why this kid didn’t receive any division I offers? His stats are pretty decent and his videos show that he has skills.

I am reminded that Steph Curry was only offered a walk-on spot at his father’s alma mater and had no offers from a major school. He did get a scholarship to Davidson. Stories like his give people like me hope that we might be able to uncover another gem flying under the radar.

I like the way you think, Doc. I hope he turns out to be a diamond in the rough. My previous comment was made somewhat whimsically, though I do fear it might become true.

Most of you probably remember Chad Estis from Aurora, Ohio and was a great 3 point threat for us back in the day. He is now Executive Vice President of the Dallas Cowboys . I assume the Ben Estes is his son and does not requires a "scholly" or any financial aid. But if he earns it along the way that would be nice.

See thread about Ben Estis on our basketball recruiting page.

And allow me to add one more: Onno Steger, who started 86 games for Western Carolina before graduating in '20. He was recruited by a former Bobcat, the late Larry Hunter.

There are just fewer D1 spots available with COVID allowing kids to take an extra year. Plus a lot of kids from the class of 2021 opted for a prep year and now there are a million kids in the class of 2022. I mentioned in another thread that my son played on an All-Star team where some kids who would normally have multiple D1 offers are scrambling to find a place to play next year. I know of at least three kids who had offers from Bryant last year but they didn't act quickly enough. One is playing at a D2 school, another D3 and the third hasn't found a home yet. In a year or two the number of available D1 spots will normalize but the transfer portal and transfer rules have altered the recruiting process permanently. A good number of kids that would have normally been able to start at the D1 level will be forced to work their way up through D2 and D3.
