Seems like the MAC will just be a stepping stone to bigger and better teams when someone has a good year or two. It sucks.

In Daytona at CBI, I sat with his mom during final game. She said they were frustrated by the lack of NIL opportunities available in Athens. I feared, upon hearing that, that his days as a Bobcat might be numbered. This hurts big time.
Interesting. Can't really blame him for that with the way college sports are now. The transfer portal this year feels like the 1st time we are really feeling the full effects of the NIL and transfer rule changes...

Also, I think this reality, as much as more money, will be the top reason we end up losing Boals down the road. At a smaller school, you have to be constantly recruiting your current players while also getting new ones. Makes it incredibly hard to build something sustainable.

I believe a poster predicted this around Christmas. Some of you wanted the NIL and freedom of movement, well now you have it.

Believe that is exactly what was predicted in the winter.

Good for him. Dude crumbled against any good team and padded his stats against lousy competition. He choked in key games. Trust me, I would have loved to see him improve but I wish him the best as he re-creates Jaaron Simmons' decision.

Absolute gut punch.

Knew after next year was probably gonna be it for him with transferring, but really thought we'd get one more year out of Sears. Also not sold on Sears excelling at a power 5 school. He was invisible in big games and there were a lot of game where he padded stats late. Plus, he's not a true point guard. He's a 6-foot shooting guard. Good luck with that. Not sure how that translates consistently at the P5 level each game.

Hate what college athletics has become.

The MAC has been decimated by the portal and people wonder why the conference has slipped in the power rankings. Can't keep anyone good on rosters.

Going to be a vicious cycle...try to recruit good players, player has good year or two, transfers to "bigger and better school" for opportunity/NIL...

rinse & repeat.

Mid-major college sports are dead.

Period.

This only solidifies that.

It just sucks. As said earlier, it will be impossible to build something sustainable in this era.

Murray State lost ENTIRE team to transfer portal after a 31-3 season. WTF!?!?!

It makes it soooo hard to get invested anymore.

F. This.

At least her priorities are straight. Not about a good education or being part of a family. No, it's the bucks.

UGH. Maybe but why not to test the waters. Maybe ends up a good move, maybe ends up no strong offers and/or PT or much NIL if does move...Taking a risk we'll see how well the calculation shakes out - or if even moves at all.

This raises several questions for me:

1. Boal's. Obvious. Other's takes?

2. What kind of NIL could a player at this level expect to make?

3. Who/what businesses here, or Bobcats supporters could offer anything significant enough to matter NIL wise? Are we talking couple K$, or Tens of K$, or what? I would think we could get together a BA NIL group - But - well maybe not....

It's fine, we can just go to the portal in hopes of getting a high-mid major PG who played maybe 10 mins per game LOL.

As long as they want to be here I would welcome Ajay/Estis at PG. Sears was given a lifelone from Boals and turned it into a new stop. I wish him well but will not be pridefully rooting for him like BVP.

You have to be kidding. I'm starting to turn into an opponent of the portal every day this occurs. God, I need a beer.

So, maybe I'm upset that Sears is leaving... but here's the truth about him wanting an NIL deal.

I work at a company that's very involved with college sports. I've signed 3 guys to NIL deals and we are adding more. Sears provides absolutely ZERO value, no matter where he's at. His best bet would have been to stay in Athens and raise his draft stock by being the best player on his team. Being a big fish in a small pond would give him more $ than going and being the 7th best player on a P5 team. When we look for guys to sign, we look for 2 things. Social media following and presence at their school. We flirted with bringing BVP on just because he was the most recognizable athlete on campus. I just don't think him going to a bigger school brings him any money at all, let alone a life changing NIL deal. All the best wishes to him, but I would have been more likely to sign him at OU than at Michigan.
