A little story related to Troutman and how out of touch some casual fans can be when it comes to D1 college basketball unless, that is, it involves the Big Ten or other major conferences. (I do assume however our 2010, 2012 and 2021 NCAA wins might have helped some in this regard)
My younger son was at a high school camp at OU and one of the high school player’s father saw Sonny out on the floor and said “he’s pretty good”, and apparently noticing his decent size (about 6’5” as I remember) asked, “is he their center?” He’s a guard my son told him. My son said he really looked surprised. I realize 6’5” centers can occur sometimes, and, today maybe Troutman might be considered a wing, but to immediately make that assumption has stuck with me over the years.
I feel this to my core. My Junior year of high school we had three kids about 6'6" in our starting lineup, but they were all considered "big men" and never developed guard skills in order to take themselves to the next level. We were the envy of the league. Everyone else may have had one player that tall or perhaps none.
