I get the sentiment, but I tend to side with Charlie Coles' view that for the MAC to be great Ohio and Fiami have to be great. Every time that program reaches what I think is the nadir, it somehow finds a way to dip lower. Schadenfreude is only fun for so long.

What other coach or coaches are likely to join these 3?

Agreed. Was joking around a bit but I agree I want it to be a competitive matchup two times a year. And agree on their free fall the past decade since Charlie passed… Miss that man and I never got to see him coach in person.

My thought is that the MAC made 3 quality hires last year with Heath at EMU, Barbee at CMU and Burno at NIU.

Can WMU, Miami and Ball St. do the same?

With Dane Fife on the market, it could definitely get interesting in Muncie.

Otherwise, not sure which way Fiami will go with this search.

when did Fife go on the market?

Not many of the posts on the forum have really been much more than lukewarm on Fife.

Lord...let it be Jimmy C. When he took the BC job I said immediately...give it five years and he'll be right back in the MAC to cause disharmony for another MAC program.

JC won nearly 70% of the games he’s coached in the MAC. I get that he’s a favorite villain here but thinking he’d be bad news for a MAC program is a bit silly. With freewheeling transfer rules and his proven ability to find talent at this level, he’d quite possibly have Miami among the top teams in the conference in a few years. The dude recruited Antonio Campbell and Maurice Ndour. He knows how to win in the MAC even if his personality sucks.

I would love to see him go to Miami. If he can turn that program around and lead them to a MAC championship and the NCAA Tournament, I will eat my words. He did nothing at TCU...was a horrible fit at Ohio (I will argue that just about any coach could have led that sweet 16 team to MAC final the next year) and a disaster at BC.
Jimmy C has lost whatever fastball he had at Kent. 19 years as a Division-One head basketball coach...two trips to the big dance and 0 NCAA Tournament wins.

You can have the 70 percent winning percentage and toss it out the window when you look at the collateral damage he made when he used us to get to a bigger job. Dude straight up had an ENTIRE SWEET 16 team returning and while we won big over cheap competition, he choked with his moves and lack of player development and relationships. Then the next year we're out in the semis in a 20-win season. And at Kent State he INHERITED a great program. He has had to actually build a program twice and failed at TCU (which was built when Jamie Dixon got there) and BC. God I hope he goes to Miami. They will become worse than they are now.

Interesting discussion on Fife. Looks like it was Woodson's decision to let him go: https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/tlajy... /

Agreed. Plus, at 57 I'm not sure he'd be interested in dropping back to the MAC, even as yet another stepping stone to a "P" team. A couple years from now he'll be 60, which is pretty much the ceiling for a new hire at a "P" team. But if he's looking for a "retirement" job and is willing to settle into what appears to be his comfort zone (the MAC) for the long haul. Then there's the personal side -- he was a MOFO assistant 27 years ago and his wife is an Ohio grad (from Kentucky, I as I recall). So, you never know.

It would help conference rankings. I think Miami is never coming back. It’s a hockey school now. Ball State has a better chance but there seems to be a weird townie fan dynamic there. No?

Without a doubt. Watching the sidelines was entertaining. Early in the year Fife would say things and Woodson would nod his head....by the end of the year he was just brushing Fife aside like he did not exist. There's always a backstory. Fife will be a good coach down the line.

Some Miami fans told me that hockey has kind of dropped off there. And basketball had a couple good crowds there this season. So maybe there's a chance to rebuild the interest.

I would tend to agree -- but I'd add having WMU and BSU be competitive to that. As it's stood for a few years, the MAC schools outside of Ohio + UB are the only schools that have been decent at basketball. That's not a recipe for sustained conference success. It's also why I was hoping MTSU and WKU would end up in the MAC.

Miami board seems pretty confident it's probably going to be Travis Steele. Like many of their posters though I also am not convinced that he's the right hire. Never made the tournament at X in four years, where tournaments were a regular thing for almost two decades. Team is playing better without him in the NIT than they were with him. Some are pointing to his recruiting abilities, though he's never had to recruit to a school at this low of a level yet. Some are also giddy about the idea of Travis' in-laws providing some much needed financial backing for facilities upgrades, though I'm not sure they'll do that.

I will say, with Travis Steele at Fiami, could get very interesting if he can recruit the diamond (Limaland-Columbus-Lexington/Louisville-Indianapolis. Recruit within that (which his reputation seems to proceed as), and they got a solid guy on their hands.....
