Caleb Fields didn't play at all this year. Cameron Young played sparingly.

Losing conference frosh of the year is a blow. Ball St. will probably take a step back from where they are before hopefully moving forward.

Edit: heard BSU frosh Sparks, Sellers, Jihad are open to being re-recruited by new BSU coach.

Akron starter Bryan Trimble in portal. Can't imagine he'll be moving up.
I don't think Sparks is really looking to move. Put his name in the portal but I bet more depends on assts and that relationship. I remember seeing Matt Howard and Zach Hahn when Lickliter left Butler. They were sitting down between open gym games at New Castle Fieldhouse. I asked what they were doing...."as long as Brad and the other assistants that recruited us stays we will too"

The relationships assts have with kids last long after those with many HCs. I still talk to Rhodes often, Ku, Townsend and those guys have kept up. TOS...never heard from him when we were there...and not since. JG and Holt are always saying hi at games but all of those other assts Walk, Dustin are really close with the guys who they built relationships with prior to commitment.

I am hoping Sparks ... a kid from 20 miles away stays ... Balls gave him some love when most others were not even looking...
https://twitter.com/PaytonSparks6/status/1509942725730263...

I got to sit with COach at the Ball State Men's Volleyball game.....for the first time since I sat with Coach Majerus before my kid was even born I have hope for Ball State Hoops. He is really cordial and has created more engagement and buzz in the community than has been here since the late 80s

Hate to say it but he is looking like he will finally fill Worthen .....and in his words "make coming to Worthen uncomfortable for anyone rolling in here'

No need to hate saying a MAC arena will potentially be full of fans. Best era of MAC basketball had arenas in Muncie, Athens, Toledo, Oxford and other locales full or nearly full throughout the hoops season. What's good for Muncie is good for the MAC which is good for Ohio basketball.

Even at the height of MAC basketball, full areas were not normal. I doubt Ohio ever averaged more than 10k a game. Maybe not even 9k.

I sat with a long time Cardinal Varsity Club member who thought 6K would be manageable next year....then he said "I know that is a normal night in Athens but it will be a big deal here where we normally see 2-3 K the last few years" He did look forward to the day when they could take the vinyl covers off the top 20 row.

Sparks returning will help. Classmate Sellers's potential return is equally important.

Is the high demand of players entering the portal just another part of the Great Resignation?

There are some similarities. Leaving your job for higher pay (leaving one program for another to improve NIL opportunities); the grass is always greener with a new job and boss (new program, new coach); a high rate of dissatisfaction in new job (players ending up moving down from previous level).

Not sure on him. Although he could help us in the three point department he hasn't really done very much at Ohio State. Finished the year at 4.8 points per game.

We’ve had good success over the years with OSU transfers.

Big pass on Ahrens.

Remind yourself of how often you cringed over the second half of the season each time BRod attempted a 3. Now, double that frequency with BRod on one wing and Ahrens on the other.

Just saw on nj.com that 3 Saint Peters players (Doug Edert, Daryl Banks III and Matthew Lee) have entered the transfer portal.

One reason being given is that Saint Peters hasn't named a new coach yet.

One question is whether Seton Hall is interested in any/all of them ?

But, when BRod took they went in 22% of the time. Where as when Ahrens took them, they went in 35% of the time. and 39% of the time over his career.

o$u fans had the same remarks/observations about Ahrens production this past season as OUr fans had about BRod. Could have taken posts on 11 Warriors and replaced "Ahrens" with "BRod" and they would have been identical to posts here on BA.

Until I'm given a reason to revert to BRod, he's BRick to me.

IMO coaches should never take players with them (definitely not those on the current roster). If a player leaves to go elsewhere because of a coaching change, fair enough, but I think it’s a d#** move on the coaches part to leave a program and take the best players with him…

Looking at it from a different angle:

What if the only reason a player came to particular school was because of the
coach ?

You make a fair point.

Bottom-line , I don't see the NCAA issuing any new rules that restrict a players rights/options. I won't be surprised if academic eligibility rules begin to erode.

Perhaps, more unintended consequences. At some point the whole facade of amateur college athletics folds. The collapse won't be pretty when the house of cards starts to fall. Remember when it looked like the old USSR and its satellite nations were going to be around for a long time, until the whole system fell apart almost overnight? Que será, será!

I don't know how I feel about the player following the coach to a new school. Happens in business a lot. A manager or VP moves to a new corporation, they bring along some all stars from their previous stop.

Oquendo from Georgia just hit the portal. That guy is pretty good.

High game was 33. Worst game was 0.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/...

His team was terrible and the Tom Arnold look-alike coach was fired.

More on point, a HC moves to another school and takes along a slew of assistants who helped make him successful. So why not take along players who have already bought into the coach and his system?

Then you are begging the players who stayed at your new school to leave and enter the portal.
