When comparing stats it's important to keep in mind that per game averages are more meaningful than total points scored, since from year to year and decade to decade the number of games played varies considerably.

True, and he was also a fifth year which also makes it a bit of an asterisk. But, very cool to see a guy break records. Had double digit PPG every year except his red shirt freshman year.

Imagine if he had the same kind of loyalty as his new teammate Kihei Clark and maxed out all of his eligibility at his original school. He'd still be setting records while helping to continue building the program. I know that's an unpopular opinion.

You have a point, but we don't really know his reasons for leaving. Could be an educational reason - he already had two or three masters at the point last year and probably couldn't go any higher. Not many doctoral options here. But, you could also argue that the transfer portal has reduced loyalty in college sports.

IMO I still am massively thankful to him and what he's done for our team. I respect your opinion although I disagree.

I'm also incredibly thankful to him for what he did for the program and his accomplishments. Also seemed like a great teammate. But, I got the sense last season that he felt checked out. Interviews he gave talked about "feeling like I've been here forever." He's a man and free to make his own decisions. In the end, he chose to walk away from our program for a new opportunity. I wish him the best, but wish he had made a different decision. to paraphrase Mean Girls, "he doesn't even go here!"

I get the sentiment, but for me, I feel like BVP doesn't owe Athens or Ohio anything. He did some great things here, gave Bobcat Nation some great memories, and was a phenomenal STUDENT athlete. He leaves Athens with multiple degrees, won a MAC tourney, won an NCAA game, all conference selection, MAC freshman of the year...I'm perfectly OK with him leaving.

Me, I'll be watching as many UVA games as I can this winter, and hoping BVP gets to go on a deep run into March.

Agree with this take. Also will be watching UVA and Alabama when I can, except if OU plays the same night. Also two time Academic All American!

Isn't Tony actually his Godfather, or something of that sort? I remember a lot of stories about the family connections when we beat UVA in the tourney.

You can't even really compare per game stats since each era has been different. 12 rebounds in 1965 is not as impressive as 12 rebounds in 2022. Craig Love's 12+ rebounds per game probably doesn't even put him in the top 10 whereas Brandon Hunter led the nation with 12+.

The implications of that point are quite interesting if you think about it. What does that say about the nature of the game back in the day versus later decades?

Shooting percentages were lower. More shots were taken. Fewer big men, so bigs with rebounding skills got more of them. The late, great Bill Russell averaged 22 rebounds per game in his NBA career.

All good points, Jeff. Another, Russell - who did greater things off the court than on it - averaged over 43 min. per game in his career. Even more outrageous, Wilt averaged over 48 min/g one season. How? His team was involved in several overtime games.

I don’t know any statistics on this matter, but I’m sure you or some other stat wonk will dig out the obscure basketball-player-heights-per-position-per-decade table from basketballlnerd.com. Put another way, while it’s clear that average player height is taller now, does that mean that we have more “bigs” relative to the heights of the average teammate?

Good point, but what I meant is that highly talented players 6-9 or taller were less plentiful and were therfore able to corral more rebounds than in today's game.
It was true in the college game, yoo. .

I’m not sure how relevant it is but any discussion about rebounding and size that doesn’t include Dennis Rodman seems incomplete. He was only 6’ 7” and is arguably the best rebounder of all time. Watching YouTube clips confirms that he simply outhustled everyone else.
