With Ohio's reliance on student fees to fund athletics, and the limitations imposed by being a rural midmajor, and the competitive/recruiting trends against midmajors, I can't see coaching basketball at Ohio to be any more than a short term stepping stone to build a resume. So, I would think any Ohio coach, including Boals, would be well-advised to get out of Dodge ASAP for any A-10 or Mountain West level job.
Are you serious? Boals made over 700k last year which is what the average A10 job pays. Ohio basketball is an A10 level job. Can't say the same for most of the MAC though where they let under performing coaches hang around for 9-10 seasons.

VCU salary $1.5 million. George Mason $925,000 plus over $400,000 incentives. Duquesne $1 million. Fordham's former coach Neubauer $725,000. I'm not seeing where Ohio's package would be "average" in the A-10. More like lower tier. But I guess I misspoke when I said "any" A-10 program would be a large step up from Ohio. Maybe I should have said "most" A-10 programs. Its a helluva lot better basketball league than the MAC

Well, I’m not ready to wish Coach Boals a fond farewell if he leaves this year. If he leaves the program in a demonstrably better way than when he found it, maybe. But as it stands with the transfers out and the recruits we would lose if he left this year, (I know, just a fan on a message board) I would NOT be happy.

Probably won’t happen and, so far seems like he is the straightest of shooters but, ya never really know.

Go Bobcats!

Hey, a man has got to do what a man has got to do. Once a Bobcat always a Bobcat, whether he stays or whether he goes. He has already given us a thrill during his playing days and took Ohio to the NCAA last year as a coach. Throw in an impressive MAC season this year, and I say that he is the Ohio Alum who keeps giving. However, times they are a changing. I say grab the money when the going is good; after all, Coach Hunter's loyalty to Ohio was not rewarded. Just saying.

I agree the A-10 isn't much of a step-up, but Butler is in the Big East. Without-looking it up, I'd imagine their budget is now far outpacing our own. A decade ago I'd bet we were closer to equals.

In this new landscape, more than ever, it feels that Ohio is going to have to really step up to be competitive. Including donors in the NIL arena.
When Butler barely lost to Duke in the 2010 final, their budget was almost identical to ours.
My favorite feature on that old blog "MidMajority" was the "Red Line" showing college basketball budgets.

Butler is not as far ahead as I expected, but they have pulled ahead of us. A Butler blog on Twitter stated Boals buyout drops 100k this coming weekend which could be a factor in timing
To summarize the link I posted:

(First D1) Duke: 22.17m
Ohio State: 10.99m
Big East (Average) : 9.95m
Big Ten (Average) : 9.87m
Dayton 7.43m
Xavier: 7.40m
Butler: 5.76m
A-10 (Average) : 4.99m
Ohio (First MAC): 3.337m
Wright State: 3.330m
Akron: 3.09m
Buffalo: 3.04m
MAAC (Average) : 2.51m
MAC (Average) : 2.45m
Horizan (Average) : 2.33m
NIU (Last MAC) : 1.77m
St. Peters : 1.64m
(Last D1) Alcorn State : 0.533m

On one hand, it's surprising to me Wright State is so close to us in spending when I consider our program far superior to their own... On the optimistic side, is it really that difficult to imagine Ohio raising it's budget 2m to match Butler's in the current money-printing society? Cardinal Health was founded by an OHIO alum... 2m is chump-change to them... Rumor has it the building across the street from the Convo even has his name on it.

This seems to be pure speculation...

I think we are all very happy with the job that Boals has done in his time here so far, and none are wanting him to leave.

I am also not so sure his accomplishments here, while we are all very happy with the initial results, really make him a target to others yet. I think some will see what could be, or potential, but will that be enough ...?

At the same time, who knows ...

Jordan took over the program in 2017 and compiled a 83-74 record in five seasons. Butler made the NCAA Tournament only one time in that span, though the Bulldogs were expected to reach the postseason in 2019-20 before it was canceled.

So, what did they get from the extra 2M they are spending? If some Phil Knight wants to pony up, fine. You're not mentioning who is making money, just what is spent.

Budgets are one thing. Revenue and profits and losses are another. These numbers only tell what is spent.

If that happens, I have a first choice replacement: John Groce.

Akron is a fiscal mess, he's had success here. Run it back.

Athletic departments lose money. In 2019, only 25 athletic departments in the nation made money. Making money is not the output of college athletics. If it was there would be no college athletics.

Man Giacomo would shit himself over that, because to get Groce, we'd have to raise the salary.

And the hits keep coming . . . with Boals leaving, followed by OUr highly-anticipated 4-man recruiting class.

Like I asked in another thread following Sears entering the portal, can someone convince me why I should continue to get emotionally invested in Ohio football/basketball in the landscape of 2022 collegiate sports?

This is nothing more than a webcrawl list of coaches with ties to Butler. No one actually knows s**t about s**t. He might be gone tomorrow, but it won't be because anything in this article willed it true or that the author knows anything. Believe me, if Boals (or Groce,. for that matter) was spotted at the Indy a/p, we'd hear about it.

If nothing else, I think we have a better chance of keeping Boals than Akron does of keeping Groce.

Remember a year ago, when we thought we'd have the whole team back from a second-round NCAA Tournament squad?

Since then:

* Preston goes pro
* Wilson blows out his knee
* McDay quits the team
* Despite a school-best 19-3 start, season flames out
* BVP transfers
* Sears transfers

Likely soon:

* Boals leaves
* Recruits decommit
* Returning players bolt for the portal

It's like a daily kick in the groin for Bobcat fans.

(And that's without even talking about the demise of the football program over that span.)
