Cece Hooks went undrafted in the WNBA draft. However, she was signed to a training camp contract by the Minnesota Lynx.
https://lynx.wnba.com/news/minnesota-lynx-complete-2022-t... /

It is very tough for undrafted rookies to make WNBA regular season rosters. It looks like the Lynx will be going with just a 10-player active roster, with an 11th spot reserved for a player who will miss the season due to pregnancy. 6 players are already signed to guaranteed contracts, and are unlikely to be cut. It looks like 15 players are expected to begin training camp for the Lynx, as several players are playing overseas and will not be available until later.

It may help Hooks' chances that the Lynx are in a salary cap crunch, which would favor signing cheaper rookies over veterans who would command higher salaries.

The Lynx only play 2 preseason games, on April 27 and May 1. The regular season starts on May 6. Hooks may be cut at any time - in fact, one of the players on the training camp roster has already been cut.

Erica Johnson submitted her name for inclusion in the draft, but was not drafted. Submitting her name gives up her eligibility for further NCAA play, unless she withdrew her name prior to the draft. At least that was the rule the last time I looked it up - it may have changed since last season.

Well that is interesting. I thought it was widely accepted she was coming back.
Wasn't she not honored on senior day?

Johnson is on the list as having renounced her remaining NCAA eligibility to enter the WNBA Draft. Johnson was not honored on senior day, but she's already been at Ohio for five years, so I thought there was a good chance she wouldn't return for a sixth year.

I was hoping Erica would be drafted. For Cece, despite her big time dribble-drive scoring and defensive skills, her inability to shoot (mid, long range, or free throws) was a closing deal on her getting drafted.

And, it seemed to me that many times she went in for ill advised layup attempts when she had teammates in position to make open shots, but she wouldn’t pass the ball out to them. She was often able to make tremendous layups against bigger defenders, and I don’t want to say that she wasn’t very talented as a driver and scorer underneath, but she sometimes seemed very one dimensional in her play and wasn’t, perhaps, the best teammate in distributing the ball.

Local TV station KSTP yesterday released a video of the Lynx training camp. At about the four minute mark, the players are shown standing around in a circle. Cece, wearing #5, has a large ice pack taped to her left knee. Not a good look.

Cece played 11:40 today in the first exhibition game for the Lynx. She made her only 3-point attempt, made both free throws after being fouled while attempting a 2-pointer, and had her only other shot attempt blocked, for a game total of 5 points. She committed one foul, and had no rebounds or assists. The Lynx play their second and final exhibition game this Sunday.

Not bad. Do you think if she has a similar / better performance she could get one of the final spots?

WNBA preseason games aren't televised or streamed, so all you can go by is livestats. The feeling I got from watching that was that she was probably playing too cautiously to really make an impact on the game. No turnovers, but no assists. Only one foul, but no steals or rebounds. Good shooting percentage, but only three shots. If she gets a chance to play a second game, I think she's going to have to do more to show that she belongs.

However, point guard may be a position of need for the Lynx. Their expected starter was a DNP today, and last week the coach said that she was told she had a non-COVID illness. The expected backup PG was also a DNP today, not having returned from her European team's playoffs. The Lynx had to slide their starting SG into the point guard role, which they probably don't want to do long term. So there may be a job for the taking. I'm hoping Cece gets a shot at claiming it.

Yep, Russia is the top paying international league. Would be a great opportunity at the current time.

Based on the 60 Minutes story on Sue Bird, it seems a number of WNBA players also play overseas to supplement their income.

Almost all the better ones do. Russia pays over $1Million dollars for good talent. Kind of sad that the US is still so backwards in regards to these types of things.

In other news, I saw that Erica officially announced her college career is done. Thanks for your contributions to the program E! In terms of raw basketball talent, I think she was the best I've seen come through the program. That injury two season ago really took a toll.

Anyone closer to the program have an overview of the roster situation? Hooks, Burris, and Johnson gone. I believe Rogan and Bambule were honored on senior day though they may still have eligibility? Kroll amazingly still has eligibility I think, and if she does return, it would be her seventh year in college basketball. I thought I saw Alexandra walking at commencement in some photo gallery. We bring in McClure as a true freshman and a transfer from Delaware. Anything else?

I'd like to hear a deep dive into the roster analysis as well. Did we pick up any transfers?

I am excited for the fresh start. Things just got stale last year, for whatever reason, and as much as I enjoyed Erika she really devolved big time in the last couple years. That combined with an incredible talent like Cece who took a large percentage of possessions herself...good time to completely reset and establish a team style and strategy as a cohesive unit.

Hopefully, we'll have a healthy Kroll, Guice, Pope, & Garnett to pair with Mace and Felder plus Dennis and new recruits. We might say we need a reset after the recent disappointment. But we better hope next years team stays healthier than recent years because if it doesn't it might be a tough season.

Very diplomatically said, and I agree with the general thrust of your remarks here. Looking ahead, I’m very high on both Felder and Mace. I believe that Felder can mature into a CeCe-type in terms of play around the hoop, but one who dishes the ball more to open team mates. CeCe for all her greatness was somewhat of a ball-hog.

I agree on EJ. Injuries really took a toll. I also think she took a lot of ill-advised shots the last two seasons. She made some really difficult shots, no doubt, but she forced a lot of bad ones that almost equated to turnovers. What really drove me nuts were the couple of unforced 10 second calls I saw on EJ. And many more situations that were close to 10.

I've not got the highest expectations for next season, but last year really felt bad, given the returners and expectations. Hopefully the ladies can get back in the top portion of the MAC soon.
