Mid-major college sports are dead.

Period.

This only solidifies that.

It just sucks. As said earlier, it will be impossible to build something sustainable in this era.

Murray State lost ENTIRE team to transfer portal after a 31-3 season. WTF!?!?!

It makes it soooo hard to get invested anymore.

F. This.
Murray State's coach left first. It's common at all levels for players to transfer when coach leaves.

AJay Sheldon?
I would say Frazier, he would be there best option as of now due to age and experience.

At least her priorities are straight. Not about a good education or being part of a family. No, it's the bucks.
Such moralizing nonsense. OU is the 179th ranked school in the country. There's a high probability chance that by transferring to a P5 school, he ends up at a better ranked school, and can make a little money. And maybe some of that money can help his actual family, as opposed to some arbitrary sense of family you're trying to apply so you can pretend his decision is somehow morally wrong.

Sucks for Ohio Basketball, but we don't own the dude. If he thinks this is the best thing for him, so be it. I hope he makes some money from basketball while he can. He worked really hard to get where he is, and I don't think he has an NBA future given how he played against guards with length.

They’re calling college sports professional now, except in the pros you have contracts and not total free agency. Not looking good for mid-majors. They’re dead. The rich get richer as usual.

Sucks but we need to deal with reality. NIL and transfer rules were going to take place. As some acknowledged at Christmas, wishing it away is like wishing a waterfall to stop.

Bottom line - as 1 year ago and 30 years ago, we do not compete with the Dukes and Michigans and NC States of the world, we compete with the other teams in the MAC. Look at the portal, all are split open - e.g., Ali Ali at Akron. Like anything in the open market, things will shake out, but it takes time...a few years and the yearly pledge week approach will subside... a bit. But for today, the teams that have an opportunity to offer recruits will find the most success. Ohio can offer today what it offered players yesterday and last month - a respected education, a solid program with a quality coach on beautiful campus with great fans and a consistent chance to win the conference and go to the Dance.

Players looking for substantial NIL opportunities will not find them here (or even an Akron) - per above, the players do not determine their value, the market does.

My take on Sears - look for him to transfer below the Mason Dixon line - his parents won'tt have to travel 10 hours to every game.

So, maybe I'm upset that Sears is leaving... but here's the truth about him wanting an NIL deal.

I work at a company that's very involved with college sports. I've signed 3 guys to NIL deals and we are adding more. Sears provides absolutely ZERO value, no matter where he's at. His best bet would have been to stay in Athens and raise his draft stock by being the best player on his team. Being a big fish in a small pond would give him more $ than going and being the 7th best player on a P5 team. When we look for guys to sign, we look for 2 things. Social media following and presence at their school. We flirted with bringing BVP on just because he was the most recognizable athlete on campus. I just don't think him going to a bigger school brings him any money at all, let alone a life changing NIL deal. All the best wishes to him, but I would have been more likely to sign him at OU than at Michigan.
Appreciate the input from someone obviously more well versed in this new sports environment in which we find ourselves. Maybe things will improve for us over time as more and more players “test the waters” and begin to realize how good they had it. My guess is it will take several years however for that to happen and actually impact the decisions of a larger segment of athletes. Will it ever be same? Obviously no.

His choice of course due to the recently new scenario with portal and NIL. NBA future is not his only challenge - he had challenges w/opps length in the MAC. He could very likely have a productive income future euro ball. One concern of mine is the erosion of loyalty and all that implies - in particular to team mates, coaching staff, etc., etc.....

PG depth chart now down to Frazier, Sheldon and Estis. Combined 11 minutes of play time with Sheldon / Estis coming in. I'm slowly beginning to realize the MAC is turning into a college basketball "G League" of sorts. Sad.

Additionally, Boals is actively looking for NIL deals for his guys. He's trying to get them everything he can. I just think kids in college think there are huge deals available if you're at a P5, but that's just not the reality. There's a resource called Opendorse you can use to find athletes to sign. Guys like CJ Stroud get around $1k per IG post. How many deals does he have? 1... a brewing company in Columbus. At the end of the day, these deals just don't move the needle for many businesses. I was going to offer Sears something next year. Guess that will go to B-rod now

It's truly bizarre to me how completely the NCAA managed to convince people that wanting to earn money is somehow wrong.

You think he's going to get a demonstrably worse education elsewhere? He either cares about it or he doesn't. If he does, he'll get a good education basically wherever. If he doesn't, it doesn't matter where he is. As for the "family" bit, you think he's not gonna be close with his teammates elsewhere?

I would rather he be a Bobcat next year. But if he's not gonna be, I'm not gonna pretend it's some immoral choice. And I'm certainly not going to criticize some kid's mom about the content of a conversation I wasn't involved in.

Like everything else this process is going through growing pains. What it will eventually come down to is that a handful of top-flight players will get some big bucks and the rest will get a few pennies and NIL won't be such a factor anymore for most players. O$U has one or two players getting lucrative deals with a local car dealer but they're not identified in the ads, so if you're not a big fan you probably don't even know who the hell they are. GaTech had some football players in a TV spot last fall, but did they make a dent in the company's bottom line? Probably not.

As for Sears, his name isn't posted yet on the 247Sports portal, but if he goes, so be it. Likely to be another Jaaron Simmons -- not getting as much PT as he did at Ohio, maybe getting to go a couple three games deep in the Dance as a sub, and three or four years after graduation becomes the video analyst on some school's coaching staff. At this point I'd like the coaching staff to be able to concentrate on next year's team and maybe recruiting and developing players whose first interest is playing b-ball for Ohio.

+100. Trying to be positive about this very talented class coming in - one dark horse in my mind is preferred walkon Ben Estis. I'd love to see that kid get a full ride with his family history here.

Our starting PG is not currently on campus. The last two PGs have been handed the keys and ended up in the NBA or transferred "up" - we'll recruit a PG out of the portal and he'll be pretty damn good for us.

I think it was a very questionable move posting the content of a conversation with a player's parent. Anyway, who's to know if NIL is truly the main reason he's transferring?

Further questionable move to post comments about Sears leaving for NIL when we have no confirmation that's even a main reason.

I'm hoping that happens. Seeing tape of Shledon and Estis though makes me feel alittle better about our PG position headed into 22-23. Estis is a dark horse in my mind. Fights / works hard. Also don't forget about AJ Brown and Elmore James, didn't AJ play some at PG at OCP?

This is Jaaron Simmons 2.0 happening right in front of our eyes.

Decent MAC Player thinks he's a good P5 player and gets a rude awakening 2-3 practices into his new program.

As far as the NIL...Sears wasn't exactly the second coming of Sammy Davis Jr / Dennis Haysbert from a charisma, charm, and entertainment standpoint. I can't believe Avalanche Pizza wasn't looking to leverage his monotone delivery with big bags of cash.

Absolutely no loyalty anymore. Sad.

I wish Mr. Sears all the best!!!

Do we really see him being on any Bobcat team that would win ANY tournament?

The transfer portal is a revolving door.

As previously mentioned, there are going to be some kids from higher conferences that will be looking for a program where they may shine and we have a golden Sport Management program.

Should Frazier be the starting point guard at OUL or OUC?

I believe a poster predicted this around Christmas. Some of you wanted the NIL and freedom of movement, well now you have it.
So a FREE 4, or 5 year ride was not enough? Although I loved him as a player, let's see how greed pans out for him.
