Why root for this guy now? According to police reports and court records, Bassett stands accused of breaking an Athens bar bouncer's nose for no reason except that he wasn't allowed to skip ahead in line. Presumably, he thought he deserved special treatment because he's "Armon Bassett." He said in an interview last month that he expects to be cleared on the assault charge when all the facts come out. Different strokes for different folks, but until he produces those "facts," I won't be cheering him on, and I'll look askance at those who do. Why? Because except for a few great games, he hasn't represented Ohio University well. He's not an alumnus, he was regarded as a head case for much of his collegiate playing career (including in Athens) and he jerked the Ohio program around (which foolishly accomodated him) when he waffled before bolting for the "professional" ranks. As some have observed, he doesn't even seem to understand that no hustle on D equals no shot for him to make a big-time roster.
