Any frequent Vegas travelers have any tips for cheap flights, and inexpensive(but nice) hotels? We're planning on flying out on Thanksgiving and back on the 30th. As someone that has always heard of the great deals when going to Vegas, but never been there - any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ben--I haven't checked this out but the housing market has cratered more in L.V. than any place else so I imagine that renting a house for the weekend would work.  Of course, you'd have to coordinate with other 'Cats to form the group to get the group benefit.

Likewise, there have to be hotels or condo assns or some such which rent haciendas for periods of days.

This would be classic "Ohio in the house."

If you are looking for a cheap (and fun) place to stay....Imperial Palace.  It is right in the middle of the strip (right across from Caesars) and is usually under $40 a night.  If you are looking for some place fancy to stay, this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for a cheap place with fun dealers (if you are into gambling) then IP is a good place to stay.

You can check out southwest.com to see what the flights are like out to Vegas.  Compare those prices to those found on your normal travel websites (and factor in that you dont have to pay for 2 checked bags with SW.  

The last time I went to Vegas I paid a total of $290 for 4 nights at IP and roundtrip airfare.  You just have to look around to get good deals.

Been to Vegas a ton of times, but only have stayed at the NYNY and MGM Grand. I like both places. 

I'll most likely be in Vegas in November, but not when Ohio's out there. The Thanksgiving weekend date cramped the style of my friends with family obligations. Family. Like what have they ever done for you?

I am looking forward to seeing that one hardcore bobcat fan just plunk $40,000 or less for a 2 bedroom condo in Vegas. NO really they have condos 2-3 bedroom condos selling for $40K or less!  As long as we do this invitational every year and you get attackers who want to rent it out for Vegas trips your in the clear!

You can also try Harrah's website (They own the Imperial Palace) you can register for a Total Rewards account (They have great Comps). I'm staying at the Flamingo for free three nights. My problem is finding a decent cost for the flight. SW airlines is even too high that weekend.

I will be there for sure. Not sure where I'm staying, but there are always a ton of choices in Vegas and you can always find something cheap unless you are going New Year's Eve.

I was thinking I should buy my tickets for the games through the OU athletic department, rather than through the Orleans. I want to sit in the section with other Bobcats.

Any idea when those will be available?

It's Thanksgiving weekend, so be prepared for inflated travel costs.  I visit Vegas 3-4 times a year, and have been there for Thanksgiving weekend.   Despite the glut of rooms, timeshares, condos, etc. holiday weekend rates are usually pretty firm.  shop around though, don't be afraid to look at places off the strip, and you may be able to find something reasonable.  But do it now...many people have already started booking thanksgiving trips...

ATHENS, Ohio - The following press release contains information concerning the purchase of tickets for Ohio men's basketball contests at the Las Vegas Invitational.

 
Las Vegas Invitational Tickets

The Ohio men's basketball team will be competing in the Las Vegas Invitational, November 26 and 27, against Kansas and Santa Clara. Game times are still TBA. Tickets for this event go on sale through the Ohio Ticket Office on Monday, August 16 at 8:30 a.m. Only tournament packages are being sold. No single-game tickets will be available. 
Ohio has three sections of the arena that are available for sale:
Section 5 tournament passes: $170 (Located on floor level in front of section 116)
Section 102 tournament passes: $138 (yellow section of 102)
Section 118 tournament passes: $115 (blue section of 118)

Because of the extremely limited number of tickets available to Ohio, only Bobcat Club members have access to purchase these tickets. Bobcat Club members at the $1,200 level (All-Conference) and ABOVE have first priority to purchase from August 16 until September 1 at 5 p.m. After September 1, any Bobcat Club member has access to the tickets. Sales are based on a first come-first serve basis within those designated dates. The deadline to order is October 8. All tickets purchased will be mailed out prior to the event. No tickets will be left for will call.

Its been a few years since I've been to Vegas, but I usually poke around on http://www.vegashotelspecial.com/ for hotel deals.  They list all the discount codes for the hotels.  I usually end up at MGM for around $50 a night. 

Last time I was there, I only gambled at MGM Mirage Players Club Casinos (MGM Grand, The Mirage, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, NYNY, etc...) with their players club and actually had my room comped for the week.

I go out at least once ayear on business and was just there for a Fishing Tackle convention. I usually stay at the Mirage, you should be able to get a room for $90. They make their money on gambling and outragous food prices. The Hilton at the Las Vegas convention center was going for about $55 in July, not nearly as nice as the Mirage. If it were me I'd spend the extra $30-50 bucks and stay at the Mirage, great bar called Revolutions "Beatles Bar". There's an Outback right across the street that's a lot cheaper than any hotel restaurant.

and i'll be out there sept 10-14, staying at a real nice place off strip $43 a nite.  but good rates in july and sept don't necessarily translate to good rates over a holiday weekend in Nov.  Shop around but be prepared to pay a bit more than summer rates...

some helpful online hotel sites have already been listed...another is   www.travelaxe.com

If you don't want to stay at Orleans, stay at Gold Coast.

It has a shuttle to Orleans and is next to Rio, which has a shuttle to the Strip (it's not a long walk, either, but the shuttle is just convenient). Plus it's across the street from The Palms which is all anyone really needs for Las Vegas. 

I think Gold Coast is something ridiculous like $25 a night and it's very nice. It's where I stay every year for the WSOP.

If you dont have a car I wouldnt stay off the strip, you'll just spend in taxi fees the amount you might save on a hotel room. I've stayed at Hooters before where they offer 12 free wings for every nights stay.

The problem is that Hooters isn't right off the strip in the middle of the strip, like, say, the Westin is. It's off the strip at the butt end of the strip, which I should note is my favorite area of Las Vegas, but not everyone's. 

I do most of my poker playing at Excalibur and blackjacking at Tropicana, if you're an old-schooler like me who likes looking rich but playing cheap then go for it.

Technically, I picked up two at center court right on the floor behind da press guys today.  Eight game pass.

Not sure how many games I'm good for and the over/under on the g.f.'s attn span can't be more than two.

you can make the trip however costly as you want. last time i was in Vegas just happen to be durring NBA summer League . I proudly wore my favorite OHIO shirt "with a paw" to watch the CAVS summer team. Low and behold, Brandon Hunter wore a CAVS jersey and was the leading scorer of the entire game.  TRUE

Thanks for the suggestions here. We've got our flight+hotel now booked. Now to find a couple things to do while there.. Shouldn't be as tough as the accommodations.

hey mcbin, have a great time...don't know whether you are going out with yr significant other or just with the boys...either way there is lots of cool stuff and some of its free...such as the bellagio fountains or the gardens at the Flamingo (just a few steps from the sportsbook LOL).  forgive me if you.ve been there and already know about this stuff...

Can we stop suggesting the Imperial Palace and other dumps as acceptable lodging?  If you are going to Vegas, stay on The Strip spend the extra $20/night to at least stay at the Flamingo or Harrahs.  Shuttles and long walks to the action are a hassle.  I have been twice already this year and stayed at Flamingo and Aria.  Aria is pretty sweet, but the deals I can get from Harrah's are better.  I got an offer this week from Harrah's properties to stay at Planet Hollywood for $29 for the entire trip and will probably stay there or Caeser's.  OU trips like this do not come along very often, so do it right.  I cannot wait for the trip.  See everyone out there.

I get similar offers from my Players Club card including free nights at places like CP and Rio (has free shuttle to the strip), but I would stay at Excalibur or IP before I stay at the other two.  I just find the gambling atmosphere much more enjoyable at those two places and I dont spend any time in my room anyway (except 2-3 hours of sleep some nights) so I dont even take that into consideration.
