Charges set to be dropped and Emoni will rejoin the team.

Great news for Bates, his family, and MAC basketball.

Hopefully he's able to move forward from this in a positive way.

Interesting, the whole "but why did they search the car over a traffic stop" narrative from the original thread can be answered in the ESPN article:

"According to the police report obtained by ESPN, deputies observed a black Mitsubishi Outlander run a stop sign and initiated a traffic stop. The report says Bates stated there was marijuana and a handgun in the vehicle and an ensuing search of the vehicle uncovered a gun under the driver's seat. The serial number under the barrel of the gun had been removed, according to the report."

He told them it was in there.

Good for Emoni to be able to avoid serious trouble here. Hopefully it's the end of stories like this for him and he has his life in order.

Wonder what horse trading was done for this sweet deal. “No, this isnt my car. Yeah there’s an illegal gun under the seat. Yeah I think there’s drugs in here too. Who knows? Could be anything. I play hoops for EMU so, you know, whatever.” ….

Playing hoops for Eastern Michigan, has to be a BIG time influence on the court. Major programs are always getting favors! Maybe Bates even came up with a couple free tickets to the judge (if any are available).

I am sure those that were so quick to label the officers racist will issue a quick and heartfelt apology for not waiting until the facts of the case became available.

Nope, not really. Wasn't aware all facts have been released.

Well. That's true. Probably added to his credibility.

Emoni should try to capitalize on his good fortunes by signing a NIL deal with a gun manufacturer. There's nothing America loves more than a good comeback story embracing capitalism and the 2nd amendment right to bear arms

Well done. This one got a good laugh out of me. Might as well try a local dispensary while he's at it.

Wow imagine simply assuming that an industry that was birthed as Slave Catchers is systemically racist.

I stick by my statements. Emoni wouldn't have been charged if his name was Kyle. It wasn't his vehicle or firearm.

Agree to disagree. I think if he was Kyle, and not a high profile basketball recruit, charges would have stuck.

Searching the threads for that prediction and timing. Unable to find a prediction amidst your many responses (maybe I just got lost picking through the acrimony of the posts and the sheer number of replies over in the other forum once it got moved) but here's one below from the day the news broke. If you know where it is I would be interesting in looking at what was said. Going over to the MAC forums as I am really curious as to what other MAC fans have and are saying. In any case, it will be fun to watch what kind of impact he has on the MAC and the EMU program and it's culture.

Jeez. Will be an interesting 30 for 30 in the future. I'm not sure how he is going to salvage his career from this
Next steps... declare for NBA draft. Go undrafted. Struggle to catch on in Summer League. Back to Michigan around the same crowd that he needs to carry a gun around.

Sad.
Just a shame to watch him crash and burn like this.
He'll be fine. No problem if you are on the right side of the media. THey all love him. There will be a clear path for his return.
